Posted Thursday, December 12th, 2013 by Tip Top

SmuttynosePortsmouth, NH – The shipping containers that protected our brewhouse and bottle filler arrived in Portland on December 8 and were then brought down on truck to the brewery.

The equipment traveled from northern Italy and southern Germany to Hamburg, where it was loaded onto a boat.  The first leg of the sea voyage was from Hamburg, Germany to Reykjavik, Iceland, where the containers where transferred to another boat for the transatlantic voyage to Portland, Maine.

The installation process can be followed online with our construction webcam, accessible through

Date: Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Time: 11am-1pm

Location: The new Smuttynose brewery, 105 Towle Farm Road, Hampton, NH.  Please stop by when you can; we’re very excited about this development and we’d love to get the news out to the surrounding communities.  There will be some excellent photo opportunities featuring cranes and large shiny brewery tanks suspended in the air.

  • There are parking spaces for you to use between the brewery building and the farmhouse.
  • The equipment will be unloaded from truck-mounted containers parked at our loading docks and then put in place by installers.  The entire installation and commissioning process should be complete in about eight weeks, including
  • This is one of the final steps before we begin transferring production to Hampton
  • The brewhouse was made by Steinecker in Bavaria while the bottling equipment was made with German technology in Italy by Kosme.  Both companies are part of the Krones group.
  • Our webcam, accessible through, is pointed directly at the brewhouse space so folks at home will be able to follow the installation
  • Both of pieces of equipment feature a great deal of automation and instrumentation, which provide an extreme amount of consistency in our process which leads to a higher level of beer quality in regards to shelf stability, efficiency and flavor.

Equipment facts:

  • Brewhouse: fully automated, 100 hectoliter, four vessel CombiCube system that’s capable of producing 8 full brews in 24 hours, though we won’t grow into that for sometime.
  • Bottling line: 60 fill valve, double pre-evacuation filler capable of doing 450 bottles per minute, though our line will max out at ~350.  We also have a new labeller, so beer drinkers can expect some slightly new label designs that will go on straight, every time.
