Jul 04, 2011 – ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Oscar Wong, founder of Highland Brewing Company, was honored by the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce recently with the William A. V. Cecil Leadership Award for his contributions to the tourism industry in the area.

Wong "forged the path for craft breweries, resulting in a new tourism product for the Asheville area that has gained national attention," said Diana “Dini” Cecil Pickering, daughter of William A.V. Cecil. She presented the award with her husband, Chuck Pickering.

In accepting the award, Wong stayed true to his humble style. "We've always been proud of Asheville, and now it appears Asheville is proud of us. We love you," said Wong. As Asheville's first legal brewery, Highland, which Wong "started as a hobby" in 1994 has grown to be the largest craft brewery in North Carolina.

The William A.V. Cecil Tourism Leadership Award recognizes a leader in the hospitality industry who has helped guide tourism for Western North Carolina. The recipient displays leadership, vision and community involvement. Wong's community service extends from past President of the Arc of Buncombe County (2004 - 2011) and current board member, President of the Asheville Rotary Club (2011-2012), and board member of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. "Ever since high school, I have accepted the message that giving to others is its own reward. Winston Churchill summed it up: You make a living by what you earn, you make a life by what you give," said Wong.
