In 2011, New Belgium had a waste diversion rate of 94.38 percent
FORT COLLINS, CO – July 30, 2012 – New Belgium Brewing’s 2011 Waste Diversion Report is now available at newbelgium.com and shows the brewery diverted 94.38 percent of its waste from landfills last year. However, this number would climb significantly if the craft brewer included spent grain, spent yeast, spent Diatomaceous Earth (DE), or Process Water Treatment Plant sludge, since these materials are diverted to local farms. When including these brewing byproducts, the diversion rate jumps to 99.88 percent for 2011.
The 2011 report, which can be found at http://www.newbelgium.com/files/sustainability/2011%20NBB%20Waste%20Diverion%20Report.pdf, takes a look at the improvements, success and challenges of New Belgium’s 2011 waste diversion and reduction efforts. It also outlines future projects and tasks that New Belgium hopes will increase its diversion rate and overall waste reduction.
“Our ultimate goal is to someday be able to say that we send zero waste to landfills,” said New Belgium Waste Reduction & Diversion Specialist Alie Rich. “We’re close, but we definitely still have some work to do. That’s why every year we take a good look at what’s working and what’s not so we can ultimately meet and exceed our objectives.”
In 2011, some of the ways that New Belgium worked to improve its waste systems included:
For 2012, New Belgium has several tasks and initiatives outlined as well, including:
For a complete list of specific goals and projects to meet these initiatives, you can view at the full report athttp://www.newbelgium.com/files/sustainability/2011%20NBB%20Waste%20Diverion%20Report.pdf. For more information on New Belgium Brewing, visit www.newbelgium.com.

New facility to feature packaging hall, tasting facility, improved bike lanes
FORT COLLINS, CO, July 26, 2012 – New Belgium Brewing executives unveiled conceptual drawings for their new brewing facility to a packed house in Asheville yesterday. The drawings included a “liquid center” tasting room, a 200-barrel brewhouse, malt building, packaging hall and cellar space. A warehouse facility will be built offsite. Executives wanted Asheville residents to see the plan first and have an opportunity to offer feedback.
“There will be impact but we will work hard to make it right,” said New Belgium CEO Kim Jordan. “We could have built on a lot of sites but we wanted to be on a livable, walkable site. This site will be a challenge, but we are up for that challenge.”
The new facility will have to be elevated above the 100-year flood zone along the French Broad River. Buildings and material from the old Asheville stockyard will be recycled during deconstruction this fall with heavy demolition being done November thru December and ground-breaking in January.
The brewery is working with the city and state Departments of Transportation to make infrastructure improvements including the widening of roads, smoothing of curves and the addition of traffic signals. An off-site warehouse facility at a yet-to-be-determined location will minimize trucking traffic in the area.
The brewery will have a 700,000-barrel capacity, producing both bottled and kegged beer for distribution along the east coast. The project is slated for completion in 2015.

Largest Stone Brewing Co. Charity Event Commences August 17ESCONDIDO, CA (July 26, 2012) -- Stone Brewing Co. may be celebrating its sweet 16 this year, but true fans know that the brewery's aggressively-flavored bitter ales are anything but sweet. To commemorate the happy (hoppy?) day, Stone is releasing Stone 16th Anniversary IPA on August 13, and will hold its annual 16th Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival August 17 and 18. One hundred percent of the profits from the festival will be donated to local charities including: Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos, Fight ALD, Palomar Family YMCA, and Surfrider Foundation.
Sixteen years ago Steve Wagner and Greg Koch opened the doors of Stone Brewing Co., and sold their very first keg of Stone Pale Ale to the only customer who would drive to the brewery and pick it up (shout out to Vince Marsaglia of Pizza Port fame!). Stone has grown from a small operation producing 400 barrels of tasty beer during its first year of production, to a projected 180,000 barrels this year. Although much has changed, brewing and promoting craft beer has always remained at the forefront of the company's goals. Also a core value of Stone's culture is giving back to the community.
"Each year we've raised a glass to celebrate our accomplishments but more importantly, we've raised more than $1.5 million for local charities since our first Anniversary Celebration back in 1996," said Greg Koch, CEO and Co-Founder of Stone Brewing Co. "We want to exceed last year's donation amount of $240,000 and contribute to worthy charities around our community. We hope you join us for a great time. Cheers!"
The two-day event begins Friday, August 17 with the Brewers Reception held on the grounds of California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). The $75 ticket price includes a commemorative glass, tastings of special beers, meet and greet with the world-class brewers featured at the festival, and complimentary gourmet fare and live music. The Stone 16th Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival is also held at CSUSM and tickets are $40 per person, per session – Session A is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Session B is 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Festival features more than 40 breweries and 100 beers, as well as the infamous Arrogant Bastard Ale onion rings, complimentary homebrewed sodas, and samples of Mike's Beer Cheese. Ticket holders will receive a commemorative tasting glass with 10 four-ounce samples. All Access Pass/Rare Beer Section tickets have already sold out.
For those that want to take a more personal approach to Stone's philanthropic efforts, the company suggests joining Dyehards for Charity. The Stone Dyehards are a cadre of brave Team Stone members and Stone fans willing to dye their hair to raise money for select charities. San Diego, CA – July 24 , 2012 - Karl Strauss has inked a deal with DBI Beverages Inc. to distribute the company’s portfolio of award winning craft beers in 8 warehouses across 22 counties in Northern California. With the launch of Northern California, Karl Strauss Brewing Company is distributing its beers outside of Southern California for the first time since opening in 1989.
Until now, the company has focused on self-distributing its beers throughout Southern California, with an emphasis on organic growth and a fanatical attention to quality control. Currently the 44th largest craft brewery in the entire US with distribution in only half of the state, Karl Strauss looks forward to sharing its beers with all of California. “We’ve had fans asking for our beers up in Nor Cal for a long time,” says Paul Segura, Karl Strauss Brewmaster. “We wanted to wait until we had all of the pieces in place—the new bottling line, keg machine, and additional capacity—before we made the move into Northern California. Quality is paramount and we want to make sure we do this right.” Despite pent up demand from beer fans in several states, the company is dedicated to controlled, quality growth in California before expanding elsewhere.
DBI Beverages took an initial opening order of 5,000 case-equivalents and will enter the market on and off-premise with award-winning Red Trolley Ale, Tower 10 IPA, Pintail Pale Ale, Windansea Wheat, and Wreck Alley Imperial Stout. Subsequent orders will also include the return of the company’s highly anticipated Coastal Reserve Series, featuring Big Barrel Double IPA, Blackball Belgian IPA, and Boardwalk Black Rye IPA. “We were up there last week for training and the level of enthusiasm DBI has is through the roof,” says Marc Martin, Karl Strauss VP of Beer. “We’re looking forward to a great partnership. They understand craft beer and our brand.”
In addition to partnering with DBI Beverages, the company is exploring relationships with several other distributors to fill out the footprint of the state. Karl Strauss also recruited beverage alcohol industry veteran, Kevin Riddiough, as the Northern California Sales Distribution Manager. Riddiough comes to Karl Strauss with 15 years of experience with “Pacific Wine & Spirits” and knowledge of the Northern California marketplace.
Karl Strauss is kicking-off its Northern California launch with a series of pint nights across the Bay Area. The company will also be participating in several beer events, including:
7/21/12 - Kraft Brew Fest – San Jose
7/28/12 - California Beer Fest – Santa Cruz
7/28/12 - Bay Area Brew Fest – Fort Mason
8/3-5/12 - Mammoth Craft Beer Fest– Mammoth Lakes

Eric Giddens, co-owner of Kern River Brewing Company, is heading London to participate in his 6th Olympics. No, he is too far over the hill to be an athlete; he will be announcing the Canoe/Kayak events for NBC. Eric has previously competed, coached and judged in the Olympics and will be drawing on all of these past experiences to help viewers understand the event and get them excited about the competition.
The Whitewater Slalom competition will be held at the Lee Valley Whitewater Centre. In this competition athletes must negotiate a series of gates through challenging whitewater with their final score being a combination of their running time and any penalties they incur if they touch or incorrectly navigate through a gate. Team USA Men's Kayak Athlete Scott Parsons has frequented the Kern River Valley for training and past competitions including the 2005 National Championships hosted at Miracle Hot Sprints. Qualifying events at the Olympics will take place on Sunday, July 29th and 30th with medal rounds on July 31st, August 1st and August 2nd.
After the completion of slalom, Eric will move to the Flatwater venue at Eton Dorney and call the sprint events. Much like rowing, these events are head-to-head on a lake over distances from 200 meters to 1000 meters. Speed and strength are the name of the game here with races often decided by a tenth of a second or less. Qualifying starts on August 6th with medal rounds on the 8th, 9th and 11th.
KRBC will be the home for the London 2012 Olympics in Kernville, showing events and posting updates from Eric and 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Rebecca Giddens who will also be there cheering for her friends on the water. Make sure you stop by and raise a glass to Team USA, or anyone else for that matter.
