The SurlyFest kickoff happens at Stub & Herb’s bar on Tuesday, September 11th. SurlyFest & Furious pints for $3 and free Surly pint glasses to folks that show up early. A great place to kick things off as Stub and Herb’s will now be focusing on local microbrewed beer. See you next Tuesday.
Oh yeah, cans will hit the liquor stores Tuesday/Wednesday next week. Omar

It's pretty cool, the new bar carrying Surly up in northern Minnesota near McGregor is just down the road from my friend's grandparent's place.  I've been in there a couple times and it's not a nice place but with Surly on tap I may have to stop in next time.

Hello Surly Nation,

I hope you got your tickets to Autumn Brew Review, ‘cause it’s sold out and
we’re bring out the big guns. Here is our pouring schedule for the fest:

Limited Quantities
VIP Oak Aged Cask Bender
1:30 Dahmer
2:30 Bourbon One
3:30 Barrel Aged Darkness
4:30 Darkness – 2007

Available All Day(Hopefully)
Coffee Bender
Bender
Furious
Cynic
SurlyFest
Cask Tea- Bagged Furious

We were planning on pouring oak aged cask furious at 4:30, but Todd drank it
all. So instead you will have to settle for a preview of this year’s
Darkness. What’s Dahmer you ask, good question. I let Todd brew it and name
it (remind me not to do that again.)  Anyway, the beer is a Smoked Baltic
Porter. It will be released sometime in the next few months as a draft only
beer. As our tradition continues at ABR, wear your Surly swag and we’ll give
you a pint glass at the fest (while supplies last).

We are doing a couple beer tastings tomorrow evening – Thursday, September
27th

#1 - Princeton Liquors in Maple Grove will be hosting a tasting from
4:00-6:30. I will be standing around. Stop by and say hi and check out the
17% discount on all craft beers, including Surly.  Princeton Liquors is
located on Bass Lake Road just off of 494. These guys have been big fans of
Surly and pushing our beer hard in the NW suburbs. Stop by and say hi and
grab some beer.
Princeton's Liquors
12790 Bass Lake Road
(763)559-3257
www.princetonsliquors.com

#2 - The second tasting will be taking place at The Liquor Barrel in Golden
Valley. The event starts at 6:30 in Brookview Park in Golden Valley, right
across the highway from The Liquor Barrel. It is an Oktoberfest party of
sorts, brats will be grilling and Oktoberfest beers will be poured for
sampling. The cost is $5 to get in and you get a couple beer coupons for
Oktoberfest beers. Call 763.544.9881 so they know how many brats to get.
Being that the event is happening at a park, I hope the whole Ansari clan
will be there. Proceeds to go to a local charity. The location is on Hwy 55,
just east of 169.
http://www.ci.golden-valley.mn.us/parks/parks/BrookviewPark.htm

Lets see, what other news do we have...

Next tour – November 3rd

New Surly Bars –
Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes
Dock Café in Stillwater
More coming soon!

Darkness will be released right around Halloween. We will have tapping news
listed soon!

Surlyfest has left the building! Almost all the Surlyfest we brewed has been
delivered. You guys are drinking it like its gonna go outta style, or at
least out of stock. I promise we will make more next year.

See you drinking,
Omar

Beer of the Week, Coffee Bender & Darkness!
Oct 08, 2007

Furious is beer of the week at Buster's on 28th. $3.00 pints of Furious all week, but that's not the best news. Wednesday at 7:00, Busters will tap a firkin of Tea-Bagged Furious. $3 pours for Furious on cask.

Next Monday night at the Triple Rock Social Club they will be pouring pints of Coffee Bender. If that is not enough, Sarah Lawson of Surly, employee #3, will be performing with her band - God Came From Space. Also perfroming that night: Six Six Crush and Carbellion. No cover! Music starts at 9:00.

Darkness returns - come try this year's Darkness at the The Blue Nile on October 30th. See you that evening.

Your October Surly news,

A few things are going on this month. We’ll hit them chronologically,
because it’s easier than doing it alphabetically.

October 10th – All this week at Buster’s on 28th, Furious is only $3 a pint.
On Wednesday at 7:00, Buster’s will tap a Firkin of Furious. That’s right,
tea-bagged Furious at Buster’s tomorrow night.

October 11-13 – GABF. Omar and Becca are hanging out at the Great American
Beer Festival in Denver. We are bringing 50 gallons of beer. There will be
over 40,000 thirsty beer drinkers. Lets see… that’s 0.16 ounces of Surly per
attendee. I’m looking forward to seeing how that works

October 15th – Coffee Bender at The Triple Rock. Sarah Lawson (surly
employee #3) will be playing with her band, God Came From Space. In
addition, Six Six Crush and Carbellion will be playing. Best news  – No
Cover! Music starts @ 9:00.

October 30th – Darkness release at the Blue Nile. Around 7:00, Al and the
gang will tap this year’s Darkness. Look for Darkness at other Surly bars
starting Halloween eve.
Growlers of Darkness will be sold at some point this fall/winter. We will
let folks know about the plans.

October 31st – Coffee Bender at Joe’s Garage. A double feature on the roof
of locally made Halloween movies & Costume Contest. $5 cover goes to
Make-A-Wish Foundation.

November 3rd – Brewery tour – tour times @ 12:30 and 1:30.

That is the news for now!

See you drinking,
Omar

Well, after 4000# of malt, 51# of hops and 1200# of fresh from the bog, Lost Lake cranberries, Surly Two is born. Look for it around New Years Eve.

It’s been a good month at Surly Brewing.

1st off, we won a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver.
Coffee Bender took home the gold in Coffee Flavored Beers! We’re pretty
happy about that as it was the first year we entered the festival. Omar and
Becca went to the Fest and met up with lots of Surly fans and made many
more. Check out https://www.surlybrewing.com/pictures.php for photos of
Surly Nation. See you there next year!

2nd – Surly Ultimate, a Frisbee team made up of old guys sponsored by the
brewery, took 2nd place at UPA Nationals last weekend in Sarasota, FL. It
was a great culmination of my 2 favorite hobbies, drinking beer and playing
Ultimate. You know that beer helps make friends as we also took home the
Spirit Award for the tournament. Next year, we’ll bring more beer, see you
down there.

3rd – Tuesday, October 30th - Darkness release tomorrow night at the Blue
Nile in Minneapolis! The bar is located at 2027 East Franklin Ave. Official
pouring begins at 7:00. Most of the Surly gang will be there with the new
Darkness posters and Darkness t-shirts for sale. Thanks to Adam Turman for
coming up with a great look for this year’s Darkness. Check out his art-work
at www.adamturman.com. See you tomorrow night!

4th – Coffee Bender at Joe’s Garage Halloween night. Come grab a glass of
this year’s Gold Medal winning beer! Check out the Home Grown Halloween
Rooftop Double Feature. Joe's Garage Restaurant and Shadow Creek Studios
will be showing "The Monster of Phantom Lake" and "It Came From Another
World!" on its rooftop patio, Halloween night, starting at 8:30 (doors to
open at 7:30). Grilled Hamburgers, hotdogs, and other tasty treats available
for purchase. For those who like to alter their egos, we'll be having a
costume contest, plus we'll be featuring Surly Coffee Bender, spiked apple
cider, and a few other drink specials. There is no cover charge or cost to
attend, only your love of the campy, ghoulish, and delicious. Joe's will,
however, be accepting donations from folks to benefit the Make-A-Wish
Foundation

5th – Tour! This Saturday, November 3rd. Tour times are at 12:30 & 1:30. As
always, no reservations are needed. See you there.

6th – Surly goes to Chicago! Surly beer will be available on draft at select
Chicago bars. The whole Surly crew is going down, and we would love to see
you as we kick-off Darkness at the following bars:
November 12th - Hopleaf & The Map
November 13th - Clark Street Ale House, Small Bar - Division, Kuma's Corner
& Sheffields
Each bar is only getting one keg of Darkness. So if you want to try some of
this beer, you better get there early. Times to be determined and will be
listed on the Surly calendar page. See you in Chicago!

That’s it for now,

See you drinking,
Omar

If you are looking to rock this Friday, check out Sarah’s band, “God Came
From Space”, playing this Friday at the Triple Rock. The band goes on around
11:00 and Benders are $3.

Some beer news from Café Twenty-Eight, they have a new late-night happy
hour. 9-11 pm Tues-Sat $3 Furious and Bender pints & $5.95 Darkness
goblets.

I think everybody knows by now, but I’ll say it again. November 12th & 13th
– Surly hits Chicago. Omar, Todd, Sarah, Jim and Callaway will be in
Chicago pouring Darkness.
November 12 – HopLeaf and Maproom
November 13 - Clark Street Ale House, Local Option, Small Bar - Division,
Kuma's Corner, Shefflields,

It’s a good time to be heading to Chicago as Surly just took two medals at
FOBAB (Festival of Barrel Aged Beers) held in Chicago.
Strong Dark Beers
Gold Medal - Bourbon One

Strong Porter & Stout
Silver Medal- Darkness

Some dates to remember:

November 23rd – Cask Night at Café Twenty-Eight in Linden Hills. Oak-Aged
Cask Bender. 9-11pm $4 pints.

November 28th – Cask Night at Rix Bar. Surly will be bringing a pin of
Dry-Hopped, Oak-Aged Furious on Cask. A free pint if you buy some food. The
event starts around 6:30.

December 4th – Release party for “Smoke” our new Oak Aged Smoked Baltic
Porter. We will be pouring Smoke at The Muddy Pig, starting around 7:00.
This lager weighs in at 9.5% ABV and 35 IBUs. Yup, it smells like bacon
smoked over a maple fire, tastes like bitter chocolate, vanilla and beer.
Draft only – only 14 bbls brewed, so hurry up and drink it.

We will soon have an announcement on the sale of Darkness 750 ML bottles at
the brewery.

See you drinking,

omar"

1st in line for a 750 ml! :pickle:

I wonder how many weeks I have known about it being 750s?  Hmmm...I think it's been almost a month.  Rumor has it that they will be screen printed and possibly wax dipped.

From the way you talked about it whenever the topic came up, I sort of figured you knew about the 750s.

We figured you would probably need a break from the family over the holiday
season, so we have a number of cask events to help out, and Darkness info.

November 21st – Mackenzies Pub. Tea-Bagged Furious, tapping around 7:00.
Pints for $4.

November 23rd – Café Twenty-Eight. Oak-Aged Cask Bender and Darkness. New
late-night menu! 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

November 28th - Rix Bar & Grill. Oak-Aged Furious on Cask at Rix and some
Darkness. Order some grub and get a free cask beer. 7:00 pm

December 4th – Muddy Pig. Official release of "Smoke", our oak-aged, smoked
Baltic porter.

December 15th – Surly Brewing Company. Sale of Darkness in 750 ml bottles.
Sale time will be afternoon/evening. 2 bottles per customer. Many more
details to follow at www.surlybrewing.com. We will not be taking any
reservations or holding bottles for people. We should have 480 750s
available for sale.

See you drinking,
Omar

I just want to add that I don't know how much Darkness I am going to be able to get, so let me sort that out before the begging for bottles starts.  (for those of you that haven't already begged)

HA!  There's a reason they aren't doing it in the morning.  The brewery and the police don't want people camping out overnight.

Surly in WSJ
Nov 30, 2007

And you thought Westy 12 was hard to get! Surly Darkness just got a mention in the Wall Street Journal, very cool. We have been getting a number of calls and emails about the availability of Darkness, so let me give folks a short introduction to the Darkness.
First off, Darkness is not available in bottles or cans at any liquor store, anywhere.
We brewed 15 bbl (30 kegs) of this Russian Imperial Stout last year. To our surprise, it quickly shot up the rankings of both www.beeradvocate.com, and www.ratebeer.com, . It became one of the highest rated beers in the world according to these sites. Last year, we sold about 2 kegs of the beer in growlers (64 ounce glass containers), only at the brewery.
This year, we doubled the production to 30 bbls (60 kegs). It takes 5-6 months for this beer to be made, that?s why there is so little of it. A few more people got the beer in bars and we even sent some to Chicago. At this point, there is practically none of the beer left in bars. We do have some beer left to sell from the brewery. We will be selling 480 - 750 millileter bottles from the brewery on December 15th. People can buy 2 bottles of Darkness. Bottles are $15.00 each. We will start selling Darkness bottles at 2:00 pm. We can not ship this beer to anyone per MN State Law. Also, we will not save any beer or a place in line for people.
We will be selling 6 bottles of Darkness on ebay and donating all proceeds to charity. The 6 bottles will be sold in individual units, so there will be 6 opportunities to purchase. I believe the ebay sale will start December 16th and run for a couple days. We will have a link up when it happens.
We will be selling growlers of Bender and Furious on December 15th from noon - 2:00. Individuals that are waiting for Darkness will be able to purchase Growlers without losing their place in line. More info about the day will be posted as we figure it out.

Wow, looks like they upped their initial number substantially.

They had always planned on selling 480 bottles.  It's 2 bottle limit per person so many people were saying they'd only be selling to the first 240 people (assuming everyone is getting 2 bottles).  Café 28 was nice enough to give up their last keg of Darkness just so there could be a couple more bottles.

I see. I read it as 480 to 750 bottles.

Wishful thinking!

Good question.  No clue how many people will show up.  They have had as many as 1000 for a tour.  If that many show up it will be a zoo.

People at RateBeer are talking 2-3 hours.  I'm sure there will be plenty of people that aren't on any beer sites showing up even earlier.  It's going to be a zoo for sure.  They went with the 2pm start time to keep people from camping outside overnight (the police department and the brewery didn't want that).
