I went to San Diego last summer. Great Maple was an awesome brunch. Highly recommended. Gotta visit Geoi and Carlos and I forget the name of the bar, but the one a few blocks from Bine and Vine is great.

Will be visiting at the end of February. Despite beer-geeking for a while, I have never visited the whale's vagina. It is just a weekend trip, so can't completely fill my time with beer. So looking for some advice.

I'd like to do some old-school beering: places/beer I have know about for years. Should I do Stone, Alesmith, Hamiltons, Oggi's??? And maybe find something worthwhile but newer, no idea what that would be.

Also, other worthwhile San Diego attractions?

I'll be staying at the Omni Hotel. Also, likely car-less.

I've never been there so not sure if it's worth visiting or how far out of the way but everything Modern Times touches is gold.  Look into it.

Edit: Looks like it may not be open by then. :(

Not sure what this cryptic post means, but there has been some chatter that they could be closing.

Looks liked I def need to go to Toronado. It would be my third location.

My thinking is to do Toronado, Hamilton's, a Pizza Port, and Stone World Bistro. All old school places that I have been hearing about for years. Maybe a bottle shop or two. Modern Times will fall lower on the list.

Any non-beer suggestions?

Since you'll be in Downtown and car-less, and San Diego is very spread out, these are what I suggest:

Breweries/Tasting Rooms:
-Mikkeller Little Italy
-Resident Brewing
-Thorn Brewing (Barrio Logan location)
-Coronado Brewing
-Half Door Brewing

Bars:
-Fathom Bistro
-Hamilton's Tavern
-Bottle Rocket

Thanks to UncleRandy for this one.

A: Whoa, lots of carbonation here. Almost shot out of the glass. Towering, webby head made up of various sized bubbles...surprised its lasting as long as it is. Body is a very dark brown, almost black allowing no light thru.

S: Iced coffee, powdered cocoa, red grape juice and roasted barley

T: Begins with that sour twang so many stouts have now adays...sort of a mixture between soured chocolate milk, cola and grape juice. Nectarine flavor tickles the tip of the tongue while mellow bittersweet chocolate and coffee work as a faint taste. Finishes with lingering lactose, gentle sourness and roasted grains.

M: Thin with an explosive, fluffy carbonation that blows up when it hits the mouth. I need to swirl the beer in the glass to get it containable. Beer appears to be oily on this lips...kinda cool.

D: Decent. Not a huge fan of these uber sour stouts on the market. Not sure where they are all coming form.

Picked up a single at Riley's here in Madison.

Pours black with visible yeast sediment and an out of control head, like it was shaken or something (it wasn't). Smell is nothing spectacular, roasted malts, decent hoppiness to balance, with very subtle coffee notes. Taste follows suit. Gets a little better as it warmed, but still didn't blow me away. Mouthfeel and drinkability are solid, I could drink a few but probably wouldn't seek it out again. Just so-so all around.

I remember when infected stouts seemed to happen a lot more often. They sucked.
