Black IPA's, add them to the list of...
« on: February 25, 2011, 05:27:32 PM »
...new beer styles I now hate.

At first they were interesting and "refreshing" because they were new and tasty but now that every Joe-schmoe brewery has one out....I HATE THEM.  :hot:
Bitter, piney, citrusy and....roasty? I'm done with 'em now, thanks.

What say you?

I've never really dug 'em.  A few are ok but I've never really cared about them... let alone have enough to get tired.

Enjoyed the ones I've had.  Town Hall made one recently.  Also liked 21st Amendment's Back In Black cans, Full Sail Bump In The Night, Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale, Yakima Glory, Southern Tier Inquiry, Deschutes Hop In The Dark, Terrapin Capt'n Krunkles Black IPA and others.

I try (but don't always succeed) to appreciate the craft in any well-made offering regardless of style and have had at least 1 or 2 very solid IBAs. It's not really something I knock over children and old ladies like George Costanza when there's a fire at a party to seek out, though. The few I've tried don't get as much synergy between the hop schedule and the grain bill as do the lighter malts of a nicely-done IPA or DIPA. The heavy roasts seem to bang up against the hops a little much for me.

Great Dane (Madison, Wisconsin) brewed up a dandy Black IPA called "Parallel Universe".

bumping this as this is not a style i enjoy at all, but I now have to brew one for a homebrew club challenge

anyone have a commercial example they really enjoy?

the ones listed in the bjcp style guide as good examples are: 21st Amendment Back in Black, Deschutes Hop in the Dark CDA, Rogue Dad's Little Helper, Widmer Pitch Black IPA and Southern Tier Iniquity (which is a double)

not sure how many of these i've tried, but....meh

The style originated at VT Pub and Brewery (so people who insist on calling them a Cascadian Dark Ale can shove it up their ass) and one of the first brewers to formulate the recipe was John Kimmich.

My suggestions:

1. Carafa, and dehusked. Take anything that will give a roasty astringency the hell out of the recipe.

2. Stay away from the fruit bomb hops; I would go with Simcoe, heavy late addition, with a clean bittering hop.

I don't care for the style.  I never order them.  Can't think of a single commercial example that I think is exceptional.

haha. doesn't seem like popular opinion has changed much on this topic in >5 years.

was thinking along the lines of simcoe/amarillo for the late additions. lately i've been a bit partial to something like magnum for clean bittering. was also considering using a VERY small amount of rye, but idk.

perhaps that's best left for a future iteration. i could easily get behind a black rye ipa, but just black ipa has me nonplussed here. also made me realize that i'm less than completely satisfied with any of my existing IPA recipes.

I think if you are going to do a black IPA, figure out what you really want from it and build your recipe from there.  I find the roasted malts step all over the hops and makes me not crave another sip.

So the cleaner the black malt the better.  Think color over texture and roasted flavor.  Try to get the hops to truly shine as well as possible and keep the roasted malts to a minimum.

I know the historical argument, and I don't dispute it... but I would suggest that the argument over the naming is silly because its more an apples / oranges thing.  My experience with anything truly claiming to be CDA is that its hop character is typically as dank as possible, making you wonder if its cannabis and not hops, and the hop varieties used simply weren't around when VT Pub did the original.  In that sense, I think CDA is more a subset of BIPA.

i'm not good at putting this stuff in words but i can't see myself with anyone else except maybe urbanhack.
