Pipeworks Brewing - Chicago

Saw their fliers on the tables at FOBAB.

http://www.facebook.com/pipeworks?v=wall#!/pipeworks?v=app_6009294086

http://www.pipeworksbrewing.com/

They must have something in the works (location wise) if they are doing this type of promotion.

They have a fundraising site set up on kickstarter.com
No location yet when I talked to Beejay last month.

Are You Thirsty?
Pipeworks Tastings Coming Soon!

Hello Pipeworks supporters!

To catch everyone up to speed, in case you missed something ;) .  We, Gerrit and Beejay, flew out to Belgium last year to apprentice with the #1 Brewer in the world, Urbain Cautteau of the De Struise Brewers (Ratebeer.com 2008).  We brewed a couple collaboration beers with Urbain while in Belgium, Pipedream and Xenophon’s Wine.  They turned out pretty awesome and now we are back, in Chicago, and ready to open our own tiny little microbrewery!  This is the one thing in life that would make us forever happy! We REALLY love making beer but we need your help to do so…

If you haven’t already, take a moment to watch our Kickstarter video (early word has it that Gerrit is being nominated for an Oscar!). We know it’s the Holidays and times are tight, but nothing could help us out more than a little bit of charity from you.  We’re halfway through our allotted donation time and we’ve raised a little over $11,000 towards our $30,000 goal (35%).  If we don’t reach our goal by Jan 1st then none of the money is collected and we walk away with nothing.  Also, your card is not charged until Jan 1st, and only if we reach our funding goal.  If everyone pitches in just a little bit, we should have no problems reaching our goal and of course, we will never forget that you’ve helped us in our time of need, seriously! (Legally we can’t offer you free beer but that’s kinda what we’re talking about here, :::wink wink::: from friend-to-friend)  Making a donation also comes with legit rewards like tasting glasses, some beer samples, T-shirts, an awesome dinner, etc.

We should be getting a bit more press in the coming weeks and we expect that to help drive pledges at our Kickstarter page, but we really need you, our core group of supporters, to help put us in a position to be within striking range of our goal before time expires!  If you have been meaning to donate, but have been putting it off, now is the time that we could really use a lift!  Signing up for Kickstarter is quick and easy. It just takes an e-mail address and creating a password. They will never spam you or give your contact information to anyone.  Then an Amazon account and credit card is all it takes to register to pledge.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, to those that have already pledged! We’ve had about 180 donors so far and about half have been our friends and family.  You guys are awesome and we appreciate every little bit!  It’s amazing to think that the other half has come from complete strangers, people that we’ve never met before but believe in our project.

Okay onto the fun stuff…

We’ve been brewing up a storm in October and November so we could have beer ready for December tastings!  Tentatively we will be tasting out beer on the 9th, 17th and 18th of December, locations to be announced via our Facebook page.  We’re trying to pencil in 2 or 3 more tasting dates as well.  Hopefully you can make it out and try some of our hard work!  Here’s what we’ve been brewing…

Berliner Weiss, sour mashed, lemony, tart, refreshing, 2.5% abv

Smoked Mild, a traditional English mild w/ a tiny amount of smoked malt, 4.0%abv

Belgian Wit brewed with coriander, orange peel, and chamomile, 5.0% abv

American Wheat brewed with peachy hop notes,  5.0% abv

Smoked Porter, one of our favorites brewed w/ cherry wood smoked malt, 7.5% abv

Pastrami on Rye, an experimental Holiday ale with 11 herbs and spices, 8.5% abv

Baltic Porter, rich and malty with notes of dark fruit, 8.5% abv

Double IPA, this one is super juicy, hoppy and fresh! We love it! 9.5% abv

Abduction Imperial Stout aged with oak and a bit of bourbon, 13% abv

[BREAKING NEWS]

We’ve just confirmed the December 17th tasting at West Lakeview Liquors

This is an amazing store and happens to be the store where Beejay and I began our brewery project.  Come taste out the above beers with us!

Friday, Dec. 17th

West Lakeview Liquors

2156 W. Addison

Chicago, IL

Tasting from 6-9pm

A very special thanks goes out to:

David Miller

Anna Spohn

Momma Oslon

James Blackburn (thx Jimmy!)

Ed Gable

Stephen Laszkiewicz

Henrik and Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Ølbutikken

Each of these people have gone way above and beyond and donated at high levels! You guys rock!

Thanks for reading! Happy Holidays! Hope to see you at one of our tastings (more will be posted soon), and please help us achieve our dream!  Feel free to share our website, Kickstarter page, or facebook page with your friends and family!

Cheers,

Beejay & Gerrit

I'm really conflicted on how I feel about them asking for donations to start a for-profit business......this whole kickstart thing doesn't seem best used in cases of upstart hipster nano-breweries in Chicago

I think it's retarded, unless there are some dividends involved.  If I'm giving you money to start a business, I'm expecting some return on investment.

This.  There's a big difference between soliciting donations and soliciting investors.  I think soliciting donations is in poor taste at best.  Perhaps they are paying dividends in beer?  That would be acceptable.
Take good care of your beer and your beer will take good care of you.

Sounds like a tasty brew. And, a cool label.

Spelled "whether" wrong, though.

It's been decided: next Berliner Weisse will be Southern Belle Sour Peach! Mashing in on Saturday. Blue Lady should be in bottles next week and distribution will be TBD.

Saw this posted on BA.

Okay...

so, unfortunately what we thought was just a minor flaw has, with warm conditioning, turned into a chronic issue with our Blue Lady bottles. This off flavor was absolutely not present when we were bottling, or else we would not have released the beer. However, we were aware that their was a slight issue with the souring that seemed to clear up with cold conditioning. We held the beer back for a few weeks and the beer tasted better with every day and we didn't think that this off flavor would manifest negatively with time. It seemed to disappear completely at bottling time and we had no idea it would turn into something much worse (cite lack of experience in this realm for that).

So, we, a tiny small itty bitty freshman brewery, don't have a recall/refund procedure in place (yes being small would seem to make that easier, but to do that the customer would have to get their money back from the retailer, and then we would have to get our money back from the retailer... (and to do it Boulevard style, 'direct refund,' isn't an option for us at this point.)

What we can do is offer up a 20oz laser logo etched tulip tasting glass for anyone who bought a Blue Lady (one glass per bottle) who feels like they got a raw deal. If you can provide a receipt or some proof of your purchase that's great; if not, no big deal. We're going to believe that more people are going to be honest about this than that aren't. There were only 900 bottles produced and we're getting 900 glasses for those that speak up. A receipt, rating, untapped check-in are of course helpful, but if you take the time to express your discontent with Blue Lady, then we'll take the time to make it up to you.

I'll post an e-mail address to send your claim to shortly.

-humble Pipeworks

I love what these guys are brewing, but man, they have to start working on a common brand for their product. There's no continuity or shelf recognition in their designs.

Yeah... it seems to be their M.O. to be the goofiest, most wacky label on the shelf in order to stand out. I'd rather save $1.50 on the wax too, but thats just me. Can't complain though, the beer is good :)

No tap room or bottles to go, yet.  Best place is Binny's and some other places in the city.  I prefer to go to "Before You Go" liquors.  It's on the SE corner of Elston/Fullerton.  It's in the tiny strip mall with Dunkin D and Subway.

Pipework's website sucks. Do they have a taproom or a place to grab bottles to-go? Kathy and I will be in Chicago in two weeks.

No tap room or bottles to go, yet.  Best place is Binny's and some other places in the city.  I prefer to go to "Before You Go" liquors.  It's on the SE corner of Elston/Fullerton.  It's in the tiny strip mall with Dunkin D and Subway.
They are good, Capones also seems to get everything they release too, and seems to get 1st delivery. West Lakeview and Binnys Clybourn are also reliable.

Mark, make sure you buy about ... a hectoliter of Citra Ninja.

This week Nisperos de Batata and a fresh revamped version of Standard Issue land at our retail partner locations!

Nisperos de Batata is a 7.5% sweet potato beer brewed with toasted coconut, cinnamon, clove and vanilla in conjunction with our good friend Junior at Puerto Rico Food and Liquors which is the first store to ever receive Pipeworks beer!

The Standard Issue is all Galaxy :excited: and the Nisperos was pretty interesting, almost like a sweet potato pie/pumpkin ale.

Hello my fellow P-dubians,

unfortunately not everyone plays by the rules or respects you as consumers and us a small business. We've recently become aware of liquors stores who we do not distribute to, that are selling our beer for super inflated prices. If you come across something fishy like this, then we ask for your help to alert us by private message or e-mail at info@pipeworksbrewing.com. Hopefully we won't be hearing from any of you about this! but thanks for your help in advance!
