- Mike Shatzel, Buffalo's beer king who owns a conglomerate of killer beer bars, has acquired in a partnership two spots down Elmwood between Utica and Bryant.  The old Toro and Faherty's, if you're familiar.  Those bars are closed and are currently being renovated.  One of them will be reopening as the brewery operation for the new Thin Man Brewery, with the other opening as the connected restaurant and taproom.  CBW's Rudy Watkins will be taking over as head brewer for Thin Man.  Considering Rudy was the mastermind behind most of CBW's great beers and everything Mike Shatzel touches turns to beer gold, I have very, very high hopes for this.  I used to live a block away, it's a shame I moved.
Update? I noticed Thin Man was available in NYC...might have to get some.

I really enjoyed their beers a few months back when I was there with Tasker and Ryan Demler of Community Beer Works.

Do you remember what beers?

They've been doing some collaborations recently, it wouldn't surprise me if you saw one of those.  They seem to have built a decent rapport with Other Half in Brooklyn and a few other NYC breweries.

At this point, they don't even can their own beers and you can really only find their stuff at a handful of local beer bars (not counting at the brewpub itself).

Their beers are good, not great.  Well above average in the grand scheme but not the best beers in Western NY, IMO.  I will say that they have been getting consistently better for the past 18 months or so that they've been open.  Every once in awhile I'll have one that really blows me away.  Their specials and one-offs are usually really good.  For the most part, their main line seems to consist of solid yet unspectacular IPAs.

Bliss, DDH Something OR Other, Buffalo Pils, All the Words, Purgatory Power Hour, and more.

Surprising they went straight for NYC, I guess it's good marketing to get your stuff on draft there.

If you get Great Lakes Brewing News, the current issue seems to be Buffalo-centric.

That's because the Great Lakes Brewing News is run out of Buffalo.  I think the actual nationwide publication is run out of Buffalo, actually (not 100% sure on that point).  It's like 5 minutes from where I work.  The Great Lakes ones are always pretty Buffalo-centric.

I think the guy who owns it is at least a part owner in Gene McCarthy's / Old First Ward Brewing; Ed and I have been there before for a beer at least once.

That’s cool. I used to pick it up more regularly, but the IL guy always covers the same 10 breweries/brewpubs that have been around 10 plus years. Other states seem to have better coverage.

There are still general tickets, but earlybird/VIP have sold out. $70 per day, Fri-Sat.
I've heard it's pretty amazing, I think Dan & Howard have been in years past.

Wasn't the festival the last straw that made Howard stop drinking?

My friend Greg (the guy who came with me to Howardfest) and I have VIP Saturday tickets.  He has an account on here that I think he never uses, I don't remember the name.  Two of my other friends from southern Ontario are making the drive down for it as well.

Any TBSers making the trip, please let me know and we can set something up.

Heading back to WNY for my annual summer hockey scouting adventure. Know most of the spots in B-lo, but after the two days we have there Donna and I are going to head eastward for some more genealogy stuff. First stop will be an overnight in Syracuse before going north to Canton and then into Vermont.

Never did any beer stuff in 'Cuse, so give me two or three places (brewery or beer-centric spots) that we can check out. Not sure exactly how much time we have there, depends on what time I can get out of the rink that Tuesday afternoon. But suffice to say we'll be able to hit up a couple.

TIA!

Some new places to check out - Belt Line in Larkinville is pretty solid, CBWs tap room has a lot of first rate beer, Resurgence just opened a vast new second brewery...

Looking like July 18-20 (in the rink until 5pm Thursday & Friday, 8am-12:30pm Saturday then heading home). That could change in the next couple weeks but right now that's the plan.

There's way more beer you'd want to drink than you can reasonably consume.  Like trying to drink the ocean.

Also re: Shelton Brothers Festival - they've started releasing the names of confirmed breweries who are participating.  A ton of heavy hitters in this list so far.

You going?
Yes

My friend Greg (the guy who came with me to Howardfest) and I have VIP Saturday tickets.  He has an account on here that I think he never uses, I don't remember the name.  Two of my other friends from southern Ontario are making the drive down for it as well.

Any TBSers making the trip, please let me know and we can set something up.

Sorry, didn't reread the thread :coffee:
Have an awesome time! wish I could go, but not in the cards this year.

Update?

Sorry Petey, just seeing this now. Got to town around 1pm Thursday, was in the rink until 5:30pm when several of us went to the Bisons game Thursday night. Breakfast at Sophia's Friday morning, then in the rink from 9am until 5om. Had to stay Friday night in Lockport (hotels in Buffalo on Friday night were ridiculous). Back in the rink 8am Saturday, headed back home at noon. So didn't get to do anything fun other than the ball game. Was in the rink, on the road or in the hotel room pretty much the entire time. #notmuchfun

There will be other trips in, possibly one in October for a tournament for a new league the Jr. Sabres are involved with.

FYI Shelton Bros are looking for festival volunteers. You work one session and get in free for the other session. We always have a blast pouring at festivals (will be doing so again next weekend at the MI Brewer's Guild Summer Festival in Ypsilanti, pouring both Friday and Saturday for our friend who is an Arcadia rep). I'm sure the Shelton Fest would be quite fun.
