Founders 2007 Harvest Ale

The arrival of Autumn means that the Hop harvest is in full swing, which also means it's Harvest Ale time!  Our Harvest Ale is brewed with fresh wet hops, grown in the Pacific Northwest, harvested and then shipped to us overnight, so we can add them to the brew immediately.  This year we are taking it to the next level and packaging Harvest Ale in four-pack bottles.  This delicious Hop treat will be produced on an extremely limited basis and will be released at the Harvest Party.

A Word from the Prez:
"Our new facility is finally at full brewing capacity, taking Founders from 5,000 barrels to 12,000 barrels annually.  We brewed to capacity all January and should realize full packaging yields in February.  We want to thank everyone for being patient during our transition as a lot of you most likely ran out of Founders products.  We do expect to have a lot more product on the shelves starting this month and forward.

Keep in mind that March brings the annual launch of Kentucky Breakfast on the Ides of March (15th).  The beer aged exceptionally well in the barrels this year and all indications from early samplings show that it will be one of the best vintages to date.  As usual very limited production means get it fast while you can.  Join us on the 15th at the Taproom for our annual Kentucky Breakfast launch party as we celebrate with live entertainment and of course plenty of Kentucky Breakfast Stout.

Finally, if you haven’t stopped down to check out the new digs, please do.  The Taproom has the same laid back atmosphere of the old facility packaged in a much larger “beer hall” feel.  Good food, music and of course outstanding beer is what it’s all about!

Thanks again for the patience the last few months and looking forward to good times in the future."

Cheers,
Mike Stevens
President – Founders Brewing Co.

I hear they are having issues with the new place, so they are still mostly brewing elsewhere (previous brew spot). Not sure if this is rumor, just what I hear.

I was searching for another thread and came across this.

This is a rumor. They moved all their equipment from the old spot to the new brewery. They are just now getting around to catching up to demand though.

from the newsletter:

Each year, on the Ides of March (the 15th), we release our Kentucky Breakfast Stout. This hand-crafted, Oatmeal/Chocolate/Coffee Stout, is brewed with a hint of vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels for one year. Currently ranked Fourth in the Nation by craft-beer reviewers at BeerAdvocate.com, KBS Release Day is a day which is anticipated by many.

This year, we decided to make it even a bigger deal, and are throwing a Party. Oracle, which features two of our Brewers on Guitar and Bass, will rock the night home. Bottled KBS will be available all day, while the party will begin at 7pm, and will feature KBS on draft (of course), along with many others. We'll also have specials on KBS Goblets and T-Shirts.

The Days Hotel, Downtown (616-235-7611), which is about 6 blocks from our brewery, has decent rates for those who want to really party it up.

Just wanted to drop a line to make everyone aware of our first annual Founders Fest - a Celebration of Beer and Music.

This Outdoor event will take place on Saturday, June 21st, from 3pm-11pm, directly in front of our brewery, on Grandville Ave.

The layout of the Fest is like a block party or street fair, and will feature Founders Ales, local food vendors, and live music from seven local and regional acts.

This event is for ages 21+ and will have a $10 admission.  For more information on this event, and any of the live music we offer, please visit our Myspace Page.

Some of the drafts available will include:  Pale Ale, Centennial IPA, Reds Rye, Dirty Bastard, Solid Gold, Rubaeus, Kentucky Breakfast Stout, Imperial Stout and Porter.

Live Music will be kicked off right when the gates open, and will feature the following line-up:

Chicago Afrobeat Project

Four Finger Five

Oracle

Chance Jones

UltraViolet Hippopotamus

Total Blam Blams

Winter/Sessions

Heads up to the Hinterland Cheeseheads...
Woodlake Market in Kohler is blowing out the remaining Founders Breakfast Stout at $10.99 a Four-pack starting tomorrow. If I remember correctly that's about $4 less, right?

$10.49 at Club Liquors this year.  Admittedly, they've got very nice pricing on most things.....

Founders will offer four bourbon-barrel aged beers at the Michigan Winter Beer Festival
by KalamaBrew Staff
Friday February 13, 2009, 8:36 AM

Josh Smith | KalamaBrew
The end of one of the bourbon barrels Founders uses to age beer.GRAND RAPIDS -- Founders Brewing Co. ages its already 'outrageous' beers in 150 bourbon barrels.

Brands, such as Red's Rye and Imperial Stout, among others, rest quietly for several months in the barrels before being unearthed for the enjoyment of many craft beer lovers.

Founders head cellarman Jason Heystek talked with KalamaBrew recently about the process of barrel-aging beers.

He described how Founders has barrel-aged several different brews for months at a time and how different types of bourbon barrels, depending on age, impart different flavors to the brews resting inside.

"There's so many differences between what kind of bourbon was in the barrels, how long it was aged in the barrels, how dry they were ... then there's differences in the beer itself. We try to make the beer the same all the time," Heystek explained, as he used a sanitized "wine thief" device to draw a sample from a barrel of beer, emptying it into a sample jar.

Heystek sometimes has to draw samples like this from up to 85 different barrels of beer to make sure that they are up to Founders' quality standards. Tough job!

"Normally, when you bourbon age things, you'll get a little bourbon flavor, you'll get vanilla flavors, which are actually tannins from the oak. You can change the color a litttle bit, particularly when you get a little bit of oxidation."

Barrel-aging changes the taste and color of a beer, but Heystek doesn't just let them sit there. As head cellarman, it's his job to determine when the beers are ready to be taken out of the barrel.

"The beers that we make, and that we need to make, have to be completely outrageous, for the most part. Because we don't make any lagers ... If you taste [the beer] and you're like 'that could be crazier,' you need to give it more time. If you taste it, and you are like 'that's crazy!' it's time to bottle it, keg it, drink it, and have a good time.'

Heystek said to expect four bourbon-aged beers from Founders at the Michigan Brewers Guild's Winter Beer Festival, held Feb. 28 at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Founders Brewing Co. eyes expansion; requests tax abatement from city
by The Grand Rapids Press
Wednesday February 18, 2009, 4:45 AM
GRAND RAPIDS -- Founders Brewing Co. officials hope about 10,000 more barrels per year will be rolling out of their West Side micro-brewery after they complete an expansion project this spring.

Company President Mike Stevens said they hope to increase their distribution from 13,000 barrels a year to 23,000 barrels a year by adding new fermenters and coolers. They also plan to add a second shift, he said.

To make the expansion possible, Founders is applying for city property tax abatements on the $746,000 expansion, which will add 10 employees to its current payroll of 47.

Expansion plans call for a $95,000 land purchase for larger coolers and about $650,000 worth of new equipment at their brewery and restaurant, located in a former trucking terminal at 235 Grandville Ave. SW.

Since moving into the new brewery in October 2007, Founders has expanded its distribution from seven states to 14 states, Stevens said. In 2010, they hope to expand their production even more and serve 20 states, he said.

Stevens credited their success to the quality of their high-end full-flavored beer.

"We're focused on beer first," he said. "The country has really caught on to better beer."

Found this on the website.  Does this mean it's going to be a brewery only release this year?

2009 KBS Release!
2009-03-14

Each year, on the Ides of March (the 15th), we release our Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS). This hand-crafted, Oatmeal/Chocolate/Coffee Stout, is brewed with a hint of vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels for one year. Ranked amongst the top beers in the world, by the reviewers at BeerAdvocate.com, KBS Release Day is a day which is anticipated by many. This year?s party will come a day early and will take place on Saturday, March 14th. It will feature the rare music of Ann Arbor?s ?NOMO?, with special guest and local DJ SuperDre. KBS bottles for to-go purchase will begin at noon, with a limit of two cases per person, on a first come, first served basis. Once it's gone, it's gone....until 2010! The Days Hotel on Pearl St. (616-235-7611), and the Radisson Riverfront on Ann St. (616-363-9001), will both have decent rates for those who want to make a night of it and really party it up. Be sure you tell them you?re here for Founders Brewing Co. You may just get a discounted rate! Make the pilgrimage to Grand Rapids and grab your '09 KBS while you have a chance!
No.

Correct, every year they release it at the brewery and have a party, but still distribute it.

Not to mention that it seems to hit the shelves, in many places, before the "official" release.

From what I'm hearing, a lot of places aren't getting much if any. Smaller places that don't sell much Founder's are getting shut out and won't have the oppertunity to purchase any at all. (Hi!>:bye:) The place where I usually go is only getting a case adn that's all that will be it for at least the county I believe. I think most of the supply the distributor gets will end up at Discount, Three Cellars and maybe Grapes & Grain. Founder's is really being strict about allocation this year.

It's official, Founders is coming to Minneapolis. Stub and Herbs will be holding the release party some time in early to mid April.

I was only at Founders long enough to have four beers.  We arrived about an hour and a half before closing on Thursday night.  Started with the Canadian Breakfast Stout and it was awesome.  That said, an 8 ounce pour would have been sufficient.  It was so sweet that 12 ounces was overkill.  Moved to the Kentucky Breakfast Stout next.  Doubly awesome.  'Nuff said.  Next up was the Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout.  Wish I could have growlered this one up.  Finished up with the Barrel Aged Hoppy Red.   :banned:

Helluva night.  Wish we wouldn't have been so far behind schedule.  It would have been nice to meet up with OC and have time to hit Hopcat.

I'm going to be there with a few friends. I hope to stay longer this year because I won't half to drive three hours back home with a bunch of high gravity beer in my system.
