Just have Hack transport you around.

But in seriousness, unless you want to get out of the city you don't need a car at all. Very walkable and easy to use public transit.

I get in at around 11:00 on Wednesday the 28th and fly out the Friday at about 11:00.   How's the transit around Portland?  Would it be wise for me to just rent a car?

I've moved since you first posted this.  I'm a little closer to the city right at the north end of Mississippi.

Shoot for Thursday night?

Sure. I don't have any agenda really. A couple of my buddies from here are going to be in town for the Expo as well, but f them. I can see them any time.

Just booked our annual trip for Holiday Ale Fest in early December... gonna come a bit earlier this year, will be in town for my birthday AND Thanksgiving.  Probably head for Bend for a day or two as well.

Crazy how I use to think that people who went the same place every year for vacation were stupid... I think this is the 7th or 8th year, Beervana is the best!

I was dubious that it was further hipsterization of an already great brewery, until I read this:

Quote
The custom-designed 10 barrel brewhouse is custom-built to explore hoppy beers, with 3 vessels, two 10 barrel fermenters, and three 20 barrel fermenters. Breakside is calling it the “Hop Lab” and one of the features is a custom-designed method to cool the wort and run it through dry hops for added aroma without the heat scrubbing off subtle flavors and aromatics. Breakside has previously focused on shelf stability, but this brewery will focus on fresh beer and discovering the next great hop varieties and techniques.

Headed to Portland for Labor Day weekend. We get in Saturday afternoon and leave Tuesday evening. My wife is planning an itinerary and I think we will rent a car for Sunday to head to the beach and some other sites.

Hack> let's get a beer.

Main breweries I want to try are Hair of the Dog, DeGarde and Cascade. Restaurants on my list are Pok Pok, Nong's Khao Man Gai and Olympia Provisions.  I'm open to IPA and food suggestions.

Plan on waiting forever to get a seat at any restaurant downtown on a weekend.  We walked around for probably an hour going to places we had on "our list" before we just gave up and went to some random Thai place.

Nice!  A beer for sure!

Try to hit Screen Door if you can time it right, lines are usually long.

IPAs - search out anything from Block 15, they are my #1 for anything hops.   Definitely do what TT said and hit Breakside.  You can probably hit them and go get at least one beer from Great Notion.

Can't recommend Modern Times tap room enough.

If you are going to eat at a brewery, I recommend Ex Novo.

These are now squarely in the middle of the pack.  Decent, but not great IMO.

Por Que No, on Mississippi for tacos.   Walk up and down Mississippi before or after you eat.  One of the trendier areas to be on the north side.

Also in that area a little further north is Victoria.  Cool bar with great gluten free and vegetarian options (if you are into that kind of thing).

Also in that area is Sweedeedee for breakfast.  Great food.

Thanks Hack! I've been recommended Great Notion and Ex Novo by someone else as well. I'll put them on the list. We are going to dinner at 830 that Saturday at Tusk and Sunday were driving out to the coast for a bit with stops in wine country and Tillamook for De Garde. Monday we plan to hit the waterfalls near Mt. Hood and at some point we want to check out the rose gardens. Other than that we will just be eating and drinking our way through town.

If you are going to the coast, start at Pelican in Pacific city... yeah, they got a spot in Tillamook, but it ain't the same... the original pub in Pacific City is top of my list for best most iconic location of a brewpub... the beach view is outstanding!... from there, head to Tillamook, but not just DeGarde, go to the cheese place, best grilled cheese and ice cream most anywhere.  I tend to spend a day on the coast doing those things, then end the evening in Astoria, spend the night there... Goonies never say die!  Several great breweries in Astoria as well, Ft George is tops.  Also, if you're gonna make a trip out to the gorge, don't just stay on the Oregon side... cross the "Bridge of the Gods" and go to Walking Man in Stevenson and Backwoods Brewing in Carson.

Ugh... Modern Times hasn't even impressed me at their home spot in San Diego... and knowing what they replaced in Portland, Commonwealth, well... its a tall order... But that whole area is great... East side of the river is tops in my book... I wouldn't miss Culmination, Burnside, or even Base Camp while I was there... and there's a great spot for Crowler fills, The Growler Guys real close to Cascade and Modern Times... they've usually got great things on tap.

And so yeah, I should mention I'll be breezing through in mid to late September... Flying in September 18, but probably doing our usual coast tour right away... in town a day or two, then on to Hood River for the Fresh Hop fest that weekend... Hack, if you're bored, maybe can get a beer one of the days we're around.

They were ok not great. I liked all the beers I had at MT per usual, but I think I liked the variety more at Great Notion.

Tusk was great for the small plates, flatbreads hummus, vegetables, etc. The mains seemed underwhelming. It would be a good place to have a few drinks and great mezze style platters.

Hat Yai fried chicken was the highlight meal for me. The duck stack at Canard was great too.

Hat Yai on Killingsworth?   Been there once and thought it was okay.   May need to go back.

Yeah. I thought it was really tasty. Good thai fried chicken, flat bread and curry.

Upright was here for a few years, but sadly I think they're gone now.
