Any cool places to drink, entertainment and gamble? I thought about driving to LA but not sure about the 5 hour ride.

It's just SNPA, but sitting at the poker tables at MGM and being able to drink them for free sure is nice.  You could always take a cab to the Freakin Frog.  They have quite the list.

Only been to Vegas once (and work took up much of the time) so just some on-the-strip exploring. Pricey, but pretty good tap lists at the Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay and Pour 24 at NYNY.

No hookers were killed this time but surely there were lots of them hanging around expecially at the Palms. I was able to make it to Freaking Frogs but I wouldn't recommend it though. The prices were high, and damn I was a dumbass for even asking for their bottle prices. I did most of my drinking on the table for free besides the tips.  :)

I agree about the Freakin Frog.  They were cool and brought me into their cooler, then I would ask a price and they would say they had to call the owners.

I stayed there for this conference last year, and was impressed.  They had Ruination on tap, and about 6-10 craft beers.

Todd English PUB had a few decent beers on tap, but it's only worth going if you can chug. Free pint if you can down it in 7 seconds. :college:

Any new recommendations?  I haven't been there in two years.

This is from a post on another web site <cough> <cough>  but the question comes up often...

Quote
If you are limited to the Strip:

1. Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay - Has a good beer menu and good food.
2. Yardhouse at Town Square - Located just south of the Strip, big selection and reasonably priced
3. The Pub at Monte Carlo - Pretty decent tap list (80 or so?)
4. Todd English PUB at Crystals/CityCenter - Some interesting food items, decent beer menu, and beer engines.
5. Pour 24 at NYNY - Not a bad little satellite bar to try some good beers
6. Whole Foods at Town Square - If you are looking to pick up a few bottles, find the leprechaun for the good stuff.
7. Sin City Brewing at Planet Hollywood - Tickers gonna tick?
8. Public House at the Venetian - Has the only certified Cicerone in Nevada, Russ Gardner working there. Good selection (some casks too) and service, but very expensive and the food is not worth it.

If you don't mind going a few miles:

1. Downtown - You can hit up 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station and the Chicago Brewing Company hub at Four Queens.
2. Freakin Frog - Beer bar with the biggest bottle selection in town, but you pay a big premium especially for the bottles
3. Money Plays - A couple blocks west of the strip, just past The Palms. Small little dive, but local BA Nick (Here4Beer) is doing some good things with their beer selection.

If distance isn't an option (and sadly these are better than any of the above):

1. Aces and Ales - Best draft selection in town, has a lot of tapping parties and beer events, and hosts the local homebrew club. A few miles East of the strip near Sams Town.
2. Khoury's Fine Wine - The local bottle shop that also has 3 tap lines. Good selection, knowledgeable staff, and fair prices. We have a weekly meetup every Wednesday from 6-8. Bring something fun in or buy something off the shelf to share.
3. Big Dogs Drafthouse - The best brew pub in town. Dave brews some great hoppy beers and the food is great. Farthest trip from the strip though.
4. Tenaya Creek - Another Nevada brew pub. Carl and Anthony have been making good beers for quite a while.
5. Joseph James Brewery - You can find their beers around town and they do brewery tours if you are into that. Matt, Alex and the other guys are around at most of the beer events and Alex has really stepped up the quality of the beers.
6. Fireside Lounge - A "Nevada" style tavern (think PT's) with better food and much better beer. Good place to combo with Khoury's since they are about 2 blocks apart.

--------

Khoury's is definitely your best bet for bottle shops. If you can, come out on Wednesday between 6-9 for our weekly gathering/share.

You just missed out on the Joseph James Rough Draft series releases. Extremely limited release that was gone in under half an hour. We don't have any big names on the shelves right now, but Tenaya Creek just released their Imperial Stout and Jackalope Barleywine. I've seen Sucaba sitting around still. Boogoop might be on some shelves. Fresh Sculpin just hit town. The latest beers from Anchorage are in too.

-end quote
---------
Ill add a few recommendations as well:

In addition we just starting getting Upright Brewing (four, five, six and seven) here in town.

Sage is awesome option if you want fine dining (one of the best restaurants in town) and beer. Their General Manager is a BJCP judge and loves to pair food with beer.

Holsteins in the Cosmopolitan has good food, great location and some cool tap handles.

There were also some decent taps at Treasure Island in the burger joint, but I don't recall the name of it.

The selection in that cooler is as crazy as the prices. They're like Ebay prices with an added bar markup. Nuts. I didn't splurge on any bottles there, but I did go for an expensive single malt. Their "liquor loft" is as impressive as their beer cooler. If you're into that stuff it might be worth checking out.

It's called BLT, and the selection was decent. I had a New Belgium Biere de Mars, and a Stone IPA.
Public House had a great beer list, poured properly and at the right temperature. Prices weren't bad for a bar, either. I.e., I paid $7 for a bottle of Widmer Hefe elsewhere, PH had Sculpin on tap for $8.25.

had a great american kobe burger at Hubert Keller's Burger Bar at Mandalay. That's all I got.

Only been to Vegas once (and work took up much of the time) so just some on-the-strip exploring. Pricey, but pretty good tap lists at the Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay and Pour 24 at NYNY.

The great burger is the best thing you have to say about their tap list?  Ooof.

I think I remember having a couple Stone Old Guardians on tap....it was about 1:30am by my body clock since we just flew in that evening and I hadn't eaten since about 2pm...so things get hazy. But the burger was fabulous. My travel mates each had different burgers (turkey) that they raved about as well.

Thanks, Ed.  I'm planning on eating there on Sunday after I get into town.

Rí Rà, the Irish bar next to the Guinness store in the Mandalay Place shops had a really decent tap list. Lots of imports, and a few good domestics. Also good bottles and some killer fish and chips.

I'm going to be out there next week for Blackhat/Defcon :nerd:  I've been to most of the better options on the strip, I think I'll try and check out Cosmo this time around.  Then again there are 3-4 vendor sponsored sausage fests full of free booze every night so beer might not be part of this trip

What's the average level of obnoxiousness for an event like that when you're (one of) the only girl in the room?  Always been curious.

This is my first Blackhat/Defcon so I am hopeful it won't be as bad as some of the smaller conferences I have been to.

Depending on the length of a conference, it usually plays out like this:

Day 1 = awkward bug eyed stares and whispers, either the only female or the leper in the room apparently.  The younger men folk don't know how to talk to girls so they steer clear unless alcohol is involved.  One old dude (10+ years on me) will strike up conversation and try to act more hip than reality allows, possibly following me everywhere.  At least 2 will assume I'm a "booth bunny" instead of an actual peer, and vendors will hit on me instead of selling me on their products.  I'll keep to myself which will later be construed as lesbianism, which is funny given none of the random other females (who are either fugly or old) want to talk to me.

Days 2 = One or two of older dude's buddies will try and make friends as well, as word of my super awesomeness has spread like wildfire.  Various "business" dinner invitations, and that one squirrelly dude who keeps sitting within 5 feet of me (girls smell purdy) and the other emo kid who tries to act like he doesn't care but has been in every class as me.  I'll give it a go and attend the social after hours events, but they usually wind up with me choosing to buy liquor at a nicer bar than be the center of attention with free booze.

Days 4+ = Decide to kick guys out of their comfort zones and initiate the conversations and just walk right into groups and join in.  Minds = blown that I have one.  By the end of the conference they let their guard down and accept me, mostly, as a peer.  Old dude still trying and failing miserably.

Oh and I do not go out of my way to flash my Star Wars tattoos either.  That's asking for trouble.

Vegas will be awesome because it is Vegas and I always have an easy emergency eject button.  My boss is coming out too, she is cool, and at least one afternoon will be skipping talks to work on tans and mojitos

8. Public House at the Venetian - Has the only certified Cicerone in Nevada, Russ Gardner working there. Good selection (some casks too) and service, but very expensive and the food is not worth it.

Thanks!  This is where my conference will be.
There were also some decent taps at Treasure Island in the burger joint, but I don't recall the name of it.

Good info here.

I'm going to be in Vegas tomorrow and Monday, returning home Tuesday.  We're staying at the Venetian but our conference is in The Palazzo, which is apparently next door.  Not sure how much free time I'll have; it's a small group and some of the other guys are big partiers so I might have to hang out with them.  Might check this Public House place out if I have time.  Looks like they have a big cask list.

Anything else in the immediate vicinity of The Venetian worth checking out?  The dinner reservations are already made (not sure where....I'm the low man on the totem pole here so I'm just tagging along) so I don't need any recommendations on that end.

You're in the right time of the year to go drink free Celebration.  It's usually on tap in MGM and you can get it if you are playing in games by the centrifuge bar (assuming it's still there) and poker.  I've probably had 60+ glasses of Celebration there over the years.
