my kid set my fridge to 33. I'm dead right?
« on: February 08, 2010, 06:41:56 PM »
I took out one normal beer and it had frozen beer inside it.

The contents of my cellar are a dead bannana aren't they?

Water freezes at 32, no?

Alcoholic beverages freeze at far lower, usually below 20.

What was the beer?

I ended up drinking 9 times my body weight in beer, broke three glasses over my head, 7 over others, ordered up 17 hookers for a little afterparty, held a cabbie hostage while running his cab through the Madison capitol doors, and I grabbed gator's ass.

All my good stuff and some crap I keep in there to not take room in the main fridge.  A 12oz of shiner bock was partially frozen.  It had a puck of ice in the middle of it.

I meant to ask what was the beer with ice.  The Shiner isn't high enough alcohol to be able to resist it.  4-5%, I'd say.  I'm guessing that anything 7-8 or higher should be okay, meaning that they wouldn't have developed any ice crystals.  I left bottles in my car overnight last year when it went down into the teens and single digits with nary any harm.

I'd drink it and hope for the best.  I've drank some "slushies" before.

Your fridge had to be quite a bit colder than 33 degrees in order to freeze beer.  I keep beer in my garage all winter here in Minnesota without incident.  The garage frequently gets cold enough to freeze the water in my minnow bucket (ice fishing) but doesn't freeze the beer.

ok.  well I'll try some of the higher abv stuff tonight.  FWIW it seemed like the higher ABV stuff didn't have any ice in them.  Plus they were further from the cooling element.

As long as they didn't completely freeze and pop the top or squeeze out a bunch of liquid you're fine.

I'm not saying it's how you want to be treating your beer, but it'll be fine to drink.

As for those commenting on how water doesn't freeze until you hit 32 degrees F... congratulations!

But as long as yer usin' a frijamater thar, in order to get the ambient temperature down to 33, air COLDER than that needs to be pumped throughout the fridge space. The more packed with delicious beer your fridge is, the colder and more forcefully that air is going to have to blow, and stuff located in the back (and particularly towards the bottom of the fridge) will be exposed to temperatures far below 33... leading to slushies.

Which will be fine as long as they don't freeze completely and pop the top or squeeze out a bunch of liquid.

Since I'm now repeating myself...

Cheers!

as long as the bottle is still a bottle it will be fine.  Let it thaw out, fix the fridge temp, and put the beer back in the fridge.  Then smack the kid.
