Vancouver, B.C.
« on: December 11, 2009, 02:59:31 PM »
Thought I better edit this as there's a few places in the OP that are gone or have changed hands, and I've added a few food places for people to check out while they're there.  Most of the places I've listed are in or around Gastown, as that's probably my favourite place to hang when I'm in Van City.  They passed a bylaw that now allows tap rooms at the breweries, and that opens up a lot of options.  These are the best of the best, IMO. Feel free to let me know anything I could have left off.  :

Alibi Room - www.alibi.ca - 50 taps, 3 casks. Doesn't get any better up here.

St. Augustine's - http://staugustinesvancouver.com - 40 taps.  Never been.  It's on Commercial, a couple blocks up from the Skytrain station.

Rogue Wet Bar - www.roguewetbar.com - 20 taps.  Great atmosphere, being at Waterfront Station.

Biercraft - www.biercraft.com - The place to go if you're looking for Belgians in Van.  20 taps and over 100 bottles.  Not in Downtown Van.  Have to take a skytrain to Cambie or Commercial, which isn't a big deal.

33 Acres - http://33acresbrewing.com/ - Taproom and rotating food trucks.

Parallel 49 - http://parallel49brewing.com/ - Taproom and rotating food truck. They've got an infusion tower that they rotate everyday.

Brewery Creek - www.brewerycreekliquorstore.com - best beer store in the province.

Steamworks Brewing - www.steamworks.com - Great Brewpub.  Right on the water, and awesome beer/food.

Yaletown Brewing Company, Brewhouse at Whistler, Big Ridge, Flying Beaver - http://markjamesgroup.com/  - All good brewpubs.

Irish Heather - http://www.irishheather.com/  - Decent beer list and no shortage of Whiskey

Breakfast:

The Templeton - http://thetempleton.ca - Huge portions for a decent price.  It's right next to a porn store too.

Scoozis - www.scoozis.ca - went here with Chip. Wasn't bad. Templeton is better.

Deacon's Corner - www.deaconscorner.ca/ ? - Across from the Alibi Room. Fred went here. I've never been.

Street Meat:

Re-Up BBQ - http://reupbbq.com/ - Located on Georgia, by the Art Gallery.  Open from 11:00 am until 3:00 or they sell out.  Pulled Pork and beef brisket, with southern sweet tea.

Japadog - www.japadog.com - Japanese style hot dogs.  Never had one.  They're pretty fucking good. EskimoDave swears by them.  Good enough for the Eskimo, it's good enough for me.

Just don't frakin' go to Vancouver on Sunday for beer...

The Alibi room closes at 3:00 PM (only open for Brunch on Sunday) and a few of the other spots didn't open until 5:00...
we had to settle for Fogg & Sudds

Yea..  They keep some weird hours at that place.  Sunday's are cask night at The Whip.  I'm usually hung over and on my way back home.  Did Fogg & Suds have some Tree Hophead on tap?

Going to the Pacific NW for my honeymoon in late June, and we're looking at a couple of days' loop from Seattle->Vancouver->Victoria->Olympic NP.  Will definitely check out a couple of these.

Although right now it looks like it would be a Sunday when we're in Vancouver  :sadbanana:

I'd head down and meet up for a beer, but I'll be getting married myself in late June.  Sunday's they have cask night at "The Whip".     Also, if you're in Victoria, check out Spinnakers Brew Pub, Phillips Brewery, and Driftwood Brewery.

Alibi Room is your one stop drinking spot.

St Augustine's has the largest selection of beers.  It's more of a sports bar and the focus seems to be more on regular local beers, but they sometimes have great stuff that Alibi Room doesn't.  Take the skytrain to Commercial and then walk north up Commercial one block, can't miss it.

Central City Brewpub, home of Red Racer, is also just a skytrain ride away.  You can get stuff there that you'll never find inside a can anytime soon.  It's right across the street from the Surrey Central station.  If sketchy areas aren't your thing, go during the day.

If you're just staying in the downtown core then Viti is your best bet.  They have an exclusivity with some Quebecois brewers.  If you see Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Hibernus or Lupulus still on the shelves buy them.

Brewery Creek has the largest selection in the Province.  They are a bit pricey, but they can be your one stop shop for bottles to bring back.

I know the guy who started ReupBBQ.  A huge beer guy and nice guy over all.  His name is Chester.  Ask them on Twitter on where they will be.  I haven't eaten there, as they started up since I was last in Vancouver.  I only hear great things about them.

PS, I'm super jealous you're going to Roger Waters.

As far as other "stuff" I'm sure somebody in the Victory Square area will assist you.

I'm up in Vancouver all the time so we should meet  up the next time i'm up there.

In terms of places to go,

Firefly Wine and beer at 12th and Cambie has a great selection and its all perfectly stored.  They tend to have some things that Brewery Creek doesn't and vice versa.

Fly in to Van City tomorrow around noon. Going to hit Viti on my way to the hotel. No agenda Friday. Saturday we're drinking at Steamworks before the hockey game, then down to The Kingston most likely. Being St. Pattys day everywhere will be packed

How far are you from Vancouver?

Just over 275 miles, but it's through a major mountain pass.  It can get pretty sketchy at times in the middle of winter.  Flight was free through Airmiles.ca, just had to pay the taxes and fees.

Most expensive city in North America. You'll need it. ;)

As long as we talk a little lumber, I can write off most of the trip.

Where is the place you're working at located? Is it downtown as well?

I'll probably stay out in East Van at my buddies on Friday, then grab a hotel for Saturday, as it's easier to get to the airport from downtown.

GST is refundable for non-Canadians.  You just have to fill out a form.  Dunno if that is valid on food and "services", though.

GST is refundable for non-Canadians.  You just have to fill out a form.  Dunno if that is valid on food and "services", though.

Travel plans:
Arrival 9/28 11:00 AM in Vancouver
Departure 8:30 PM Tuesday

I'll probably be working well into the evening on Friday, but should be able to meet up that night.
Work Saturday until ??? and then get Pols drubk.
:hangover: Sunday and then work if necessary

:giggity:

I guess I should have booked a Saturday - Monday trip, but this way I don't have to miss any days of work.

Friday I'll probably take the Canada Line from the Airport to downtown.  Depending on if my buddy Geoff is in town (If he is I'll stay at his place), we'll go from there.  Worst case scenario is I'll probably book the same hotel as you're in.  (2 blocks from the Seawall, 3 blocks from Robson).  Saturday I'll just hang out and go to a "business meeting" or 2 till you're done.  Probably try and walk the Seawall for a bit if it's nice.  I've never done it and it's supposed to be fucking beautiful.  I highly suggest doing that if you're :hangover: on Sunday.  My flight leaves at Noon on Sunday I believe, so I'll grab breakfast and head out.

Do you have to be at work by a certain time Saturday?  Grabbing breakfast at The Templeton on Granville is ideal if you have the time.  I think they open around 9:00 am.

Fuck yes!  Per diem in Vancouver is 25% higher than Shanghai.  Pols, I'll buy you a beer.

We have the "HST" in B.C.      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonized_Sales_Tax

Gotta love having your Premier say that he's not going to raise taxes, then implement a NEW tax, that applies to more than the original tax did.  Fucking donkey.

My schedule will be dictated by how poorly things go on Friday night.  Based on previous conversions, my hours on Saturday and Sunday should be rather limited and on whatever schedule I set for myself.

Cool. I know you're here for work, so do whatever you've gotta do. I can pony up to any bar and kill time while you're busy

Looks like I'm going to have to go check out some timber somewhere, or look for lumber brokers downtown to try and heckle :chainsaw:

Looks like I'll get down to the Waterfront around 8:00 PM.  Drop my shit at the hotel, and see where you're at I guess?  I'll probably just go grab a few brews at Rogue/Steamworks if you're still working.  It's between your work and hotel, so it's a good rendezvous point.

It's an expensive trip for me. After four summers in a row, I think I need a different end of summer vacation.
