Yeah I picked up some acetic qualities last couple times on the Petit. I wonder if it develops over time, since I didn't get it at all at first.

Reading up on THP it seems to go away under certain conditions (mostly time) but Dovetail filters their spon/sour beers I think.  Leaving these beers on yeast seems to be the way to go.

As for acetic qualities I opened a Cantillon and it had acetic qualities too but it melded well with everything else.  Nothing wrong with it as it is going to be there but it does seem more evident with American spon/mixed.  Pitched lacto beers are really boring.  Man that Cantillon was good!

Oak-fermented Pilsner at Dovetail was great, Framboissssse too. Thanks Borrowedladder! :bye:

On the subject of bad bodega signs, see also this one in my hood:

Got replaced with:

"Wine from all over the word"

Not sure where they got these rando beer logos, but most they don't carry. Also not in the top 10 largest selections in the city either. Kinda tells you what to expect, a sketchy store with an owner that doesn't really know what's up.

Zwanze at Hopleaf

$50 gets you Zwanze and a choice of 1 of 5 other Cantillon drafts.
I assume the rest is pay as you go. No mention of food.

2 $15 pours and a $20 shirt, free admission to 5 Zwanze week events at $15 face value. Not a steal but at least they added to it. Not looking forward to lines and crowds, but getting a table early will probably be key.

Where you get beers to drink? idk man, it is what it is. I liked paying $80 for unlimited drafts at WLV but those days are gone. You’re not going anyway, so...

It just seems like these events are getting worse and worse.  I never went because WLV did not have the best rep and the people who would attend, the less I saw of them the better.

Events aren't my thing, I guess.

I tend to skip crowded events too these days, but Zwanze is an exception for me, it's sort of a tradition.

The event in Iowa is $110 for 6 oz. of Zwanze, a couple non-Cantillon beers, and a glass/poster, and lunch. By comparison, Hopleaf is a better deal imho, considering it's much closer than Iowa. No other midwest locations.

I had a blast at WLV the last couple years. Last year we just kept to ourselves away from the whalepenis table. Drank multiple full glasses of Cantillon, left fat and happy. First year at WLV there was a line around the block, lines to enter/exit the bar across the street, and a general douche crowd. I skipped it after that, but then it vastly improved in later years when they didn't do tickets online.

The brewery list for this Kveik Fest looks promising:

Too bad it's the same day as the CBS picnic.

Buried Acorn is from Syracuse, and they are fucking solid.  Should be distributing in Chicago soon (owner is originally from there).

Zwanze was great. Easy breezy, with 40 drafts across the Shelton portfolio and others. Vigneronne was the favorite, no surprise. Oerbier, Fantome, Xinnebir, XX Bitter, were all great on draft.

Tilquin won't be coming to Chicago soon. :( The distributor is in dispute with the importer, 12%. Hopefully outside Cook Co. it can be found, since their special stuff already dropped in Milwaukee and St. Louis. ISO: Pinot Gris & Oude Gueuze...

Went to Maplewood and Twisted Hippo.  The spaces for both are nice and the crowds they attracted are quite different.  Maplewood attracted young local office workers and TH had families and a surprising number of lesbian couples if my gaydar was working.

MW beers were better and their impy stout with all the flavorings was pretty good though I had only one sip.  They have an obsession with lactose and residual sugar so everything was really sweet but the aromas on the hoppies were powerful but the beers wearied the palate and some of the flavors became muted.  Just too sweet. The lagers were fine but though they were clean and not sweet they were forgettable.

I only had a couple beers at TH but they did not stand out.  They have a lot of wacky options beerwise that resemble the space with all these strange designs and loud bright colors but I passed.

Very different and they had sizable crowds so both places have their fans and that is good.  Just not for me.

Best thing I had at Twisted Hippo was a hoppy wheat and it was really great. Food was pretty good too. If you look past the zany schtick they have some quality stuff, beers can be hit or miss.

Maplewood does superior haze, and a few good lagers. I avoid any of the sweet crap, but the peanut butter Cuppa last year was amazing.

Midwest Coast... new brewery, it exists. Nothing really compelling about it.

They have a German lager & Oktoberfest I guess. Looks like a bunch of middle of the road stuff to appeal to people that are "scared of breweries". Lol. jagsfan.gif

Apparently they're distributing kegs out in to the market.  I've heard good things from people about their ESB.  I had a hazy IPA from them that was pretty impressive.  Nice juice units with a hint of bitterness.  Not overly sweet. Easy drinking.  Didn't feel bloated after a pint.  I was pretty surprised to be honest.  I had read that article a couple of weeks ago, and had the same reaction that you did.

I'll reserve judgement and try their stuff on tap, but nothing about the place itself looks compelling enough to make a trip down there. It's kind of funny that area is becoming a "brewery district" as I never see any people walking around there. Pretty much a ghost town. :tumbleweed:

Hey dudes.   So maggie and I are doing a beer trade.  lol   She wanted some cider from Portland and she's going to ship me some chicago beers.  Anything new and fresh I should ask for?   I haven't had double two hearted yet, should I ask for that?  I'm sure there's no shortage of answers.  Preferably beers in cans.

thanks guys!

Saint Errant just released Somewhere South, a collab with Hacienda (also good).

For this brew we laid down a hazy IPA base with Spelt and hopped it intensely with Sabro, Rakau, and Mosaic. Freshly zested lime, shaved coconut, ripe berries, this beer will bring you back to the days of summer past.

Hop Butcher has Reply Hazy, Try Again and Preserved In Three Dimensions.

Reply Hazy Try Again - 7.5% Double India Pale Ale hopped with Citra, Motueka & Simcoe. Orange pulp, ripe papaya and grapefruit zest.

Preserved in Three Dimensions
Ongoing field study and observation of the Sabro hop and how it behaves in the presence of other known varietals has led us to a new beer called Preserved in Three Dimensions. Sabro & Simcoe lead the way with recorded tasting notes of bright orange pulp, ripe berries and tropical buds. A love affair with Sabro continued.

Ha, same here. Ah well, not sure about the above beers specifically, but usually Saint Errant’s stuff has some balancing bitterness.

Any other styles you’d be interested in?

Their hefe also is in cans and the 2019 Kriek is pretty interesting. Half Acre has a bunch of good stuff that is dry and hoppy but I don't know of anything new.

Maplewood's new Cuppa is good but very sweet.

Double Two Hearted is good but sweet and quite strong.
