« on: November 13, 2009, 11:09:05 AM »
Please post your latest or favorite homebrew labels for others to enjoy or ridicule.

This thread is inspired by Coldchill's awesome George label: http://www.thebeerspot.com/forum/index.php/topic,2431.msg192817.html#msg192817

My graphics team actually did this one for me, but it rules none the less.  The Pirate hop is actually one of the hops that was used in the brew.

There's a store in town with a big ass stuffed llama in the window.  I really want to buy it and send it to Gayter.

I keg, so I don't bottle anymore but I still enjoy making labels and try to for most batches.

I'll post a couple more of my favorites when I get a chance.

I just got this in my e-mail:

Congratulations!  One of your labels won Honorable Mention in the 2010 Brew
Your Own Label Contest.  This is the 15th annual BYO Label Contest.

Your winning label will appear in the July/August 2010 issue of Brew Your
Own which is mailing this week.

As an Honorable Mention winner you will also receive a great prize donated
by homebrew retailers and suppliers.  The donors were notified yesterday and
you should receive your goodie within the next month.

 :excited: :pickle:

I hope that the George label is the one that was selected.  It was my favorite of the ones that I submitted.

Got my prize in the mail yesterday.  A $30 gift card to www.wineandcake.com .  Their brewing supply is somewhat limited but I'm always in needs of brewing odds and ends (grommets, bags, tubing, etc).  Also thinking about a couple of the books.  Any suggestions?

I still don't know.  Checked the local Border's today and they do not have the new issue of BYO in.

It was Tri Power:  http://www.byo.com/photos/item/620/asInline

and apparently I'm getting a carboy cleaner also.

Hey CC, how do you design your labels?

I have old versions of Illustrator and Photoshop.  I draw everything that I can in illustrator so that it will be scalable.  If I'm using clipart, I'll add it in Illustrator.  Then I finish it off in Photoshop.  The George label was almost entirely done in illustrator.  I drew it freehand (freemouse?) using a screen capture from Looney Tunes as a guide.  The only thing I did in Photoshop was the label on the beer bottle and the barcode.  The Tri-Power was roughed out in illustrator and then put into photoshop piece by piece for the layer effects, the metallic look and the textures.

Any suggestions on what kind of labels to buy and where to get them?

I was going to buy these:  http://www.amazon.com/Avery-5524-Weatherproof-shipping-labels/dp/B00006IBUX/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IWZUS70NCFU1H&colid=17GQCSSYZMY98

but they are kind of pricey, and I want to be sure they will come off easily after use.

I appreciate any advice.  I have no skills and don't have any graphics software, but want to start making my own labels nonetheless.

thanks

I presume that you'll want to reuse bottles.  I would recommend using copy paper and a glue stick to attach them to the bottles.  They come off easily when soaked in warm water and by using regular paper you are not limited in size and shape of the label.  There are also many different colors, textures and patterns available.

Yes it is.  There are a lot of awesome entries.  I liked it better when they had separate categories for pro graphics people and us rank amateurs.  I had a better chance back then.

Squid here, too lazy to sign out.

CC, your label is better than the Grand Prize. Steampunk is contrived, overdone, and lost whatever cool it had about ten seconds after its birth (ask Regretsy for further clarification and laughs). I think the Gold is much better than the Steampunk monstrosity. And yours is better than most of the other Honorable Mentions, too; more original, balanced, clean, exciting. I knows my arts, too, having been a graphic designer, art museum curator, and paid judge in art festivals. So that's my official verdict: you shoulda finished in the money.

I think it would have been more equitable to keep the pro and am divisions; who knows why they didn't--probably the same laziness that kept me from signing out of Sev's account and in as me

Great job!

Great job!

I agree!! I think the label is awesome and when I saw it on the table at Bracfest I thought it was a commercial brew from some brewery I'd never heard of before.

Then to find out it was your homebrew I was blown away.  I gotta try to start making some labels for some of my brews....just need some good graphics programs!
It's better to regret something you have done, than it is to regret something you haven't done.

Jami & Don, thank you so much for the compliments, you are far too kind.  It's just up to the personal taste of the judges.  The contest really has no judging criteria, it is wide open.  The one that really surprised me that finished in the money was the Ibis IPA.  I thought most (if not all)of the honorable mentions and editors choices were better than that.

Yeah I thought that one was a joke, too. Yours was mighty nice, CC! You always have some sweet labels.

Agreed. I was pretty shocked to see something that simplistic and boring up there. But yeah, so often it's just a free-for-all for people with no qualifications other than "I know what I like."

I am awful at this, but here is what I slapped together for the beer I brewed for my sister's wedding:

That tree was on her invitations or save the date announcements or something like that.

I figured that would get a comment... I "taught" my father how to brew with this batch. He stirred the mash a few times, added some hops, and kept 5gallons at his house to ferment, so I am giving him all of the accolades ;)

P.S. I am pretty sure that he is never going to brew again - lol

P.S.2. I already drank the 5 gallons that I took home with me to ferment.  I had to re-brew it again a few weeks ago.  I am serving my "half" out of my pin - I helped him bottle his half... that is what the labels are for.

I like it.  The colors do not make me think pale ale, but so what.  Now, try to save some for the wedding.

I will cut this out and tape this to the front of the pin...

P.S. I edited the toast at the bottom to also say "hOppily" - how did I miss that?!?
