NAVAJA
January 15, 2014  /  Gabriel

Navaja-Post.jpg
Some months ago we brewed several draft versions of Navaja, a double IPA pounded out for your pleasure. Those variants funneled us toward the light and now we're wrapping glass around it and making it a full fledged enterprise. 9.5% and full of steam, this weighty snack forges sharp and soft edges into one single blade.

Chiseled down and stripped of the unnecessary, we laid a foundation exclusively from Golden Promise malt. The Promise is barley's almond butter; a rich and chewy spackle for your mouth. Yanked from the scabbard to slap at your jelly needs, the substantial Columbus, Mosaic & Hallertau Blanc. Navaja Double IPA is a buxom tool that's sure to challenge the most daring sword swallower.

Up next, BEA ARTHUR BARLEYWINE

Her silver tresses and deadpan stare luxuriate in a chinchilla fur coat of malty madness.
Are you ready to ride a silver wave to heaven on a magic carpet of XYZ-1234 experimental hops wrapping you deeply in Bea's loving gorilla arm embrace. 15% abv

From their newsletter:

We’ve spent the last year building a new brewery just up the road from our facility on Lincoln Ave. We're now transitioning and soon we will offer up a deeper explanation of what you can expect from our brewery.

One coming (hopefully temporary) change is our ability to sell you cans of beer in our store. While we’ve been selling cans all these years, we will no longer be canning beer on Lincoln Ave. Today, the law in Illinois only allows us to sell beer in our store that was brewed and packaged on site. Also, in an effort to maintain the inventory and variety you deserve, we're suspending keg sales in our store for the time being. We are working with lawmakers and hope that the stars will realign.

In celebration of the new brewery and to memorialize our inability to sell you cans, we’re putting together a series of bomber beers. The Sprawler Series will only be sold in our store, quantities small and we’ll fire them off quickly.

Having two production breweries in Chicago is new ground. We’re taking all that comes and coordinating our brewing company into two tactical beasts — let us tame them into creative servants.

The first release will be Get Right, a Kolsch from our archives. This cover of a German mainstay should set the pace for a new tomorrow.

Fader is really good. :ale: Alpine Rain is also really good, less hoppy with a super clean dry finish. :ale:
They have been releasing sour stuff for the taprooms, but they sell out in a day or two. Last one they also sold to-go.

Last one they also sold to-go.

This:

Move Through The Hills Like A Ghost features a base beer of pilsner, wheat, oats and aged hops, fermented in freshly emptied Italian Marsala puncheons using our house culture.

The beer pours bright orange, with aromas of hay, jasmine and honey. A pillowy mouth feel delivers layers of lemon rind, earth and wood with balanced acidity and funk.

Release 4/13/18

Not sure what Columbus Brewing or Jackie O's will take, but both are high quality (minus recent issues with Jackie O's QC with their barrel program).

Still on the fence for this. It'd have to be the night session and solo. But damn, that list is insane.

The two BA beers from Jackie O's are insane good. There were some quality control issues in the past few years, but I think they have that under control...

IN for the afternoon session
Did you go to the evening session?
I had a blast, tried 40+ new beers and quite a few new breweries.

Highlight reel: Jester King/Scratch Abscission, The Referend, Fonta Flora Scuppadine, Hacienda L'Ete, Ruth Lewandowski Wines Boaz, FW SLOambic, American Solera Somebody Loves You In Copenhagen

Quote
Somebody Loves You In Copenhagen, a 6% mature Foeder ale that was aged for an additional six months in Danish Frederiksdal cherry wine barrels. Finally, it was refermented on a blend of Montmorency and Balaton cherries before being bottled.

Meeting my cousin later at HA, hoping it's not an utter shitshow. Wasn't really aware of the Benthic release til yesterday. :bag:
On a brighter note, they released Cay Hut :pickle:
