It's funny that cans used to be or still are to some extent, seen as negative.  They have the exact opposite effect with me!

Are you saying you want a 4 pack?

A four pack? Nah. One to try? Mos def.  I'm sure that we'll do another trade in the future.

From the website:

Surly Two
May 12, 2008
We will be selling 750ML bottles of Two at the brewery. Sales will take place on Saturday growler filling times, noon-2:00. One bottle is the max per person and we will have 84 bottles to sell per week over the next 3 weekends. Price is $15 per bottle. We filled about 400 bottles and that is it. No rainchecks, no holds and no do-overs.

Can anyone help me out with a bottle? Although with one per-person that might be a little difficult.

Not sure how much I can get. I'll be out of town two of the three weekends, and so far I only have one possible person to come with me to grab an extra bottle. I'll work on getting a couple more.

Interesting article with Surly being used as a real-life example.

"Surly’s personality is what makes it an “insanely great” beer competing with other “great” beers such as Premium or Hamm’s (yes, it’s great – and yes, they still sell it.)"

I agree with the concept of the article, the Omar has built an identity for the brand Surly that helps them sell beer. But there are some big holes in the way its backed up,

"Surly Beer does not have a blog and the beer they produce – whether by the bottle, can or jug – is just beer. Great beer, but just beer nonetheless. What they have done an excellent job of however, is act and position themselves in a way that has quickly cultivated a corporate personality allowing a remarkable and rapid connection with an already oversaturated marketplace."

"oversaturated marketplace?" my ass. A big part of why they grew so fast was because of the void of a specialty company like that in Minnesota. Sure we had Two Hearted Ale, Summit EPA, and Masala Mama, American Dream, but no Minnesota brewery (not brew pub) was making a beer quite like Furious.

Sad I can't make the tournament this year.  The $1 Coffee Benders were sweet and it was a ton of fun.

Hello Surly fans,
Wanted to keep you in the loop about the coming Surly events (they all
involve beer, so that makes them good).

June 14th – Saturday – grand opening of the Four Firkins liquor store in St.

Louis Park. Surly will have a firkin of bitter brewer on tap at 6:00. Stop
by and buy some beer from Alvey! Go to www.thefourfirkins.com for directions

and information.

June 18th – Wednesday – Chicago! The kick-off of CynicAle in Chicago. Omar
will be at Small
Bar – Division. CynicAle will be on tap in addition to a pin of something
Surly. See you there Chicago.

June 21st – Saturday – The 2nd Annual Surly Disc Golf Open – We will be
playing 2 rounds of disc golf at Hyland Hills in Bloomington. The cost is
$30 and you get lunch, a Surly Disc Golf, a round of golf and Surly beers
for $1. Hurry and sign up, spaces are almost filled! In addition, closest
drive to the 18th hole wins a disc golf basket. Many other beer events will
happen.
www.surlybrewing.com/golf.php

June 23rd – Monday - We are tapping our last firkin of Bitter Brewer at the
Groveland Tap in St. Paul. See you there around 7:00.

June 28th - Finally, check out this article in today StarTrib on Al from the

Blue Nile. It’s great to see him get some press for his contributions to
beer drinking! We will have a couple special beers at the Blue Nile on the
28th to celebrate Al’s 40th. I think we will have a firkin of CynicAle aged
on oak and a rare keg of two!

Surly Brewing is closing… for growler sales on July 5th. The staff is all
getting out of the brewery for a few days.

Mark your calendars – July 16th – Mackenzie’s Bar in Minneapolis. Cask beer
and a keg of Two!

Todd did some fabrication work and we are now making more coffee bender than
ever! Look for more of your favorite caffeinated beverage to pop up around
town.

Save the date  - SurlyFest is scheduled on Saturday, September 6th. The plan
is to tap the first keg of SurlyFest at the event, and then tap a few more.
There will be food, beer and music all at the brewery. Tickets will go on
sale at the brewery once we get all the details worked out.

Come on down and check out the only Surly neon sign at a bar in America! Brian Mackenzie was at our open house a few months back and saw the great neon sign that my wife and in-laws had made us for Christmas in 2005. He liked it so much, he made a Surly neon for his bar, MacKenzies Pub. To celebrate we will be drinking some special beers on Wendsday, July 16th. We will be tapping a keg of two, coffee bender and a cask!

Hello Surly Nation,
Wanted to update everybody on the latest news from the brewhouse.

#1 – Surly goes to Hell. Our newest draft specialty comes out this week –
Hell. The beer is inspired by the Munich Helles style of beer. Finally, a
beer we have brewed that my German mother will like! It is a lager beer
brewed by Todd, Sarah and Beaner. Check it out at your favorite Surly
watering-hole. We brewed one batch, so it will go fast and no, it’s not
going to be canned.

#2 – SurlyFest is coming - September 6th at the brewery. The hours are 4-8
and it will be the official release of SurlyFest 2008. We will have 3 bands,
food for sale and you get a German-made Surly Stein. Tickets are $30 each
and there are about 100 left. The tickets will be on sale at the brewery on
Saturdays from noon-2:00. Online ordering is possible on our swag page. All
the tickets will be mailed out August 25th and will not be available for
sale on-line after that.

#3 – Darkness Day is October 25th. We are working on getting everything
ironed out for SurlyFest. After Surlyfest, we will announce the details of
the Darkness sale of 750 ML bottles at the brewery. Our plan is to have more
bottles which will enable more people to purchase more than 2 bottles.

See you drinking,
Omar

SurlyFest - What a week!
Sep 14, 2008

SurlyFest was fantastic. The bands rocked the house, the food was tasty, the skies opened up and the beer was delicious. We had 500 people attending the event and over 30 volunteers. Surlyfest is now available in bars and is making its appearance in cans at your favorite Surly liquor store.
Thanks to:
-all the volunteers. Without their great help, no SurlyFest.
-Todd, Beaner and Jim for getting the draft system going
-Dahlheimer Distribution for lending us their Coors keg trailer
-Mary Selke for all her help making this event great
-Becca, my great wife. She wondered why I had scheduled the biggest ever event at the brewery 2 days before her due date for our 4th child. Well, I just figured it would work out, and it did. Tuesday we welcomed Leo August into our lives. Here is a photo of the little man.

One more thing. The volunteers decided that we should place a donation from SurlyFest in the amount of $1500 to Faith's Lodge. Here is what Faith's Lodge. does:
The mission of Faith's Lodge is to provide a place where parents and families facing the serious illness or death of a child can retreat to reflect on the past, renew strength for the present, and build hope for the future. In its Northwoods setting, Faith?s Lodge provides temporary respite for guests by offering them a peaceful escape to refresh their minds and spirits, while spending time with others who understand what they are experiencing.

Just looked at some blogs about SurlyFest.  Seems at least 2 bikers crashed and fucked themselves up on the bike ride home from it.  Guess there were a couple light-weights in the crowd.

Seems there's a position open for a brewer (could be lead or assistant) at Surly.

Where is the Darkness?
Oct 28, 2008

Wow. That was awesome.
1st, let us talk about bars that will be serving Darkness. This list is of bars in the Twin Cities that will be getting the beer on tap. It does not guarantee that they will have the beer on tap. 331 Club, 3 Square, 8th Street Grill, Acadia Café, Bryant Lake Bowl, Blue Door, Blue Nile, Busters on 28th, Café twenty-eight, Common Roots, Groveland Tap, Grumpys NE, Happy Gnome, Macs Industrial, Mackenzies, Mad Cappers, Muddy Pig, Pracna, Stub & Herbs, Washington Square Grill, Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes.
We will be having Darkness tapping events at:
October 30th- Stub & Herbs
November 5th - The Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL.
November 12th - Hell's Kitchen in Duluth
November 17th - Monk's in Sioux Falls
TBA ? 3 Square in Maple Grove.
There are no leftover bottles of Darkness from the sale at the brewery.
Surly will brew over 3500 barrels of beer this year. The 3500 barrel production number is the limit for breweries or brewpubs to get a license to sell growlers. The 750 ML bottles are a variation of growlers. So, next year we can not sell Darkness at the brewery. In addition, the current limit for getting a license to sell glasses of beer (like at SurlyFest and Darkness Day) is 3500 barrels. Regardless of changes to the law, you can be sure that we will continue to contribute to MN beer culture.
I will put some thoughts about D-Day after my head clears and bruises heal. One more thing, thanks so much to Mary Sellke and the 81 volunteers that made the event great.

So Surly is going to be available in western WI now?  I also hear that Sugar Maple in Milwaukee has Surly on tap from time to time.

Packers lose and Wisconsin GETS SURLY!
Nov 07, 2008

Ok folks, here is the deal. I have been having a running bet going with some Sconnies for awhile. The original deal was, Surly will sell beer in Wisconsin when Favre retired. Farve then retired and I got the calls to starting trucking in the beer. Well... I did not believe for one minute that he would actually retire, and guess what, he didn't.
So let us make the a new bet. We will start sending beer into wisconsin if the Vikes beat the Packers this weekend. So all you Packer fans looking to GET SURLY can root against your green and gold this weekend.
Here are the details (I'm putting this out there cause I know that AP will be running roughshod)

Paddy Ryans - November 19th in Hudson.
Bender on tap and Darkness tapping at 7:00. Omar and Todd will be hanging about and fielding your questions.
After that, you will be able to find Surly on draft in the Western part of the state - Hudson and Eau Claire areas. NO CANS, so do not bother asking.

Favre DID retire.  He held a press conference, he bawled for the cameras, he even required reinstatement from the league before he could come back...what the hell else does it take?  The fact that he UNretired should be meaningless.  He's not the first to unretire and the fact that he unretired means that he DID retire in the first place.

In the meantime, a bet's a bet.  Let's just see Surly in WI already, regardless of the outcome of this weekend's game.  I'm guessing that it's coming, either way.

No way in HELL I'm rooting for the Queens....not EVER.

Did you read it?  Surly is coming to WI.  It's just that they will only be in Western WI for now.

I did.

I just think this whole Packer/Queens bet thing is a ploy to work up the WI geeks.  It's coming when they're ready to send it.  It's not tied to any bet or it would already be here.

It's to bug Sconnies.  Damn right it is.  It's part of a Minnesotan's place in life to bug Sconnies.

I knew it all along.  I've been to the Rollerdome many times so I know just how it works.   Oh, and I've seen the Packer filter here, too.

Anywho, if Surly would have been ready to distribute to WI before Favre retired, they'd have done it, regardless.

Wisconsinites, don’t say we never gave you anything (though I do appreciate some of the beers you send our way)… Surly Brewing Co. will cross the border and honor Paddy Ryan’s Irish Pub with the distinction of being the first Wisconsin drinking & dining establishment to serve Surly. To celebrate, Surly Darkness will be will be tapped at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 19.  Omar, Todd & Linda will be present and are bringing a cask of tea-bagged furious.

Not quite true. ;)
