South Lake Tahoe, CA Aug 23rd-27th
« on: August 06, 2009, 04:33:31 PM »
What's around the area?  I'll be staying at the Embassy Suites Resort or Harrah's down the block.  Both are right by Brewery At Lake Tahoe which is just a couple feet away.

Any suggestions?

Brewery At Lake Tahoe has BAD ASS® ALE.  They might wanna go after Kid Rock for his new Bad Ass beer.  As Conan said, we can only assume it tastes like ass that's gone bad.

Floating is the best. I think I'm going to float the Comal this week in New Braunfels.

Something wrong with just getting drunk and having fun on the river?

Just that almost everyone there is beyond obnoxiously drunk.  Last time I was there I got into 3 fights with guys trying to grab my girlfriend (all separate events).  Upside is that they're all so drunk you can easily beat the living shit out of them.  Chances of people falling in the water and being unable to remember how to swim are high.  River is also pretty dirty from everyone pissing and throwing shit in it.

Ah, theeere's your problem. This is the Truckee, not Havasu. lol. It's a good time, not way loud, not crowded. Just a grand ol time with friends & beers &  some good spots to stop along the way and throw around the football.

Aaaah nice.  Sadly we'll be at a conference all day each day so I don't think there's a chance of sneaking off like that and if I did I'd be alone which would be no fun.

Stayed in Harvey's Hotel and Casino for 3 nights (stayed in the Embassy Suites Resort the final night).  It's attached to Harrah's Hotel and Casino.  Between the two they have a good number of places to grab food and tons of bars.  Grabbed a SN Pale Ale with a beef tenderloin on Sunday night and headed back to my room where I crashed out for the night.  I'd driven 4 hours while hung over back to Minneapolis from South Dakota, flew for 6 hours, then spent 1.5 hours on a tour bus so I was a bit wiped out.

Early up Monday morning and grabbed breakfast before the show.  Checked in and did the show thing.  Had a couple Deschute's brews during the show from the bar in the Embassy Suites Resort the show was being held at.  Right outside the doors of Harrah's is the driveway to the Embassy Suites.  The driveway is the state line between Nevada and California.  That night I next door to the Embassy Suites to find Stateline Brewery in a building of shops.  Stateline Brewery use to be called Cecil's Steak and Brew (Cecil's is the name of the market upstairs at Stateline that originally opened in 1940 in the same location).  Had their pilsner which was horrid so I took off.

Wandered 1.5 miles down to The Brewery at Lake Tahoe.  Had their sampler which consisted of about 7 brews.  All of them where pretty unmemorable.  Had the ribeye which didn't even live up to Applebee's steak quality.  The place seemed a bit down and dirty too.  The staff seemed to think their brews were awesome.  The menu says that their Badass Ale is served in 10oz glasses because it's "extremely strong".  When I asked how strong it was they told me "about 7.6% but because of the altitude it hits you like 12% or more".  Bullshit.  They also talked about how they were soon gonna brew "Badass' big brother" and how awesome it'd be.  I'll pass.

Walked back and went to McP's.  Every year the Northeast Chapter from the group holding the conference has a invite only party where they have an open bar tap.  Last year they blew through the $3k tab in 45 minutes and then in another 15 minutes tacked on another $1.5k.  They serve only tap beer and house wine free.  McP's had Firestone Double Barrel Ale on so I had 6 or so and chatted with a nice girl and a couple guys (cop friend with the NYPD and another cop from the Bay Area).  Headed back to the casino and had a SN Pale Ale while I played a 1¢ slot.  Put in $5, turned it into $10.75 pretty quick and cashed out.  That was about it for gambling fun for me other then turning $1 into $1.14 and cashing out the next day.

Tuesday I had more Deschute's at the show and then hit Stateline with a coworker for dinner.  Awesome cranberry and something stuffed pork chops with homemade applesauce.  Had a couple Red Rockets from Bear Republic.  Went back to the hotel and changed and headed out to the gift shops as there isn't much else to do around there.  Back to Stateline for a couple hours where I went through their craft list.  Rasputin, Deschutes Green Lakes, Stone IPA, Flying Dog In Heat Wheat, Anderson Valley Boont Amber, New Belgium Tripel, and a couple others.  After racking up a +$60 tab I headed back to my hotel for the night.

Wednesday I called The Cantina as they claim to have the biggest beer selection in South Tahoe.  Glad I called instead of taking the 10 minute cab ride over there.  15 taps of nothing better then Fat Tire.  I would have been pissed to show up to find that.  Spent that night drinking at Stateline Brewery again.  Had their NY Strip which was awesome.  Found out why both of the breweries I'd been to had shitty beer.  They have the same brewer.  Their pilsner tasted like a buttery pale ale.  Pale ale wasn't as horrid but still no better then any pale made by someone like Michelob.

Overall, Tahoe is a beautiful place but boring has hell.  Nothing to do unless you're old and wanna buy a time share.  There are more real estate offices then there are people it seems.  Just a couple blocks from the resorts the town turns into a bit of a shit hole with some weird shit like a fantasy motel with wedding chapel with butch lesbians I wouldn't wanna meet in a dark alley and broken glass everywhere.  Lots of gift shops but everything in the area is owned by Hilton so it's all the same stuff at every store (Hilton owns Harvey's, Harrah's, Embassy Suites, Marriott Timber Lodge Resort, and all the shops in a couple block area for the most part).  Every shop sells this Heavenly Sports wear too.

Nice place but I won't be sad if I never make it back again.  I am bummed that I found out I could zip line down one of the mountains but not til the last night there.  "At 3,100-feet it's the longest in the US. Be prepared for a fast, steep descent because the 525-foot vertical drop matches that of the Space Needle.  The Heavenly Flyer zipline propels riders over treetops at speeds up to 50 miles per hour - and the total ride time is about 80 seconds. I love tahoe.  Good to know they need decent beer - if I ever fall into a pile of money, I'm moving there and brewing for a living!

SouthLake Tahoe is the suck.    I have a cabin in Incline and if I never made it to Southlake again I would be happy.

One of our timeshares is on Kingsbury Ridge, NV side.  We go there every other year to ski Heavenly.  It's... well, it's Heavenly!
