Spank Me Baby! With Wood Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barley Wine Soon To Be On Tap. We still have a couple of kegs of our 2006 Spank Me Baby! Barley Wine that aged in bourbon barrels until fall of 2009 ... that, should I become sufficiently motivated, I will empty the cooler and pull them out of their hiding spaces. We still have two bourbon barrels full of the 2006 Spank Me Baby! Barley Wine (yes, they have been aging in wood for four years now) that we will have to transfer at some point.

That was one of the best beers I had at the Great Taste.

Dirty Old Man Barrel-Aged Imperial Rye Porter To Make A Return. Not only do we have a keg or two of this saved from last year that we will eventually put on tap... but we were able to secure a batch of Rye Whiskey barrels again this year. And not a moment too soon as I just finished my last bottle on Tuesday. Not sure when we will be re-releasing the beer... guessing sometime in mid to late spring.

Having  A Hard Time Keeping Up With Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale. And not for a lack of time... this is one of the few beers that we brew with a significant portion of malt not coming from our local supplier. We use LOTS of malt from Scotland and England in this beer and have been having a difficult time procuring enough for brewing. Placed an order in late October and we still have not received the malt... hopefully next week. That way I can be brewing on Black Friday and Whatever The Saturday After Thanksgiving Is Called instead of relaxing like the rest of the non-retail workers in the U.S....

New Brewer Hired. The hiring process is long and arduous... especially when one lacks an organized approach and is a poor interviewer. We are hoping we lucked out with our latest brewer, Nick Van Court. It has been a awhile since we interviewed him... so unfortunately I am short on details. I do remember that Nick is a graduate of the Siebel Institute (a brewing school in Chicago); he currently works for Milwaukee Brewing Company (a brewery located in Milwaukee); lives in Madison; and his fiancé seems to wear the pants in their relationship. Nick is scheduled to start on Monday, January 24. (Note from Stacey: Sorry, Nick... Better to just get it over with and let Rob initiate you into the world of Tyranena, with all its positives and negatives! Welcome aboard!!)

New Floors In Brewery. Well, not exactly. During the holidays we had segments of the floor resealed. The epoxy that was installed when the brewery was built had given way in places and hot water and cleaning chemicals were eating away at the concrete. The installers used something other than epoxy that, in theory, will stand up better to this environment. We'll see...

New Case Sealer Installed. Yes, another exciting toy. We just put into service a case sealing machine at the end of the bottling line. Doesn't really save any time... and really only saves work for the person at the end of the line. But down the road it should help us to have people roam and perform other tasks while we are bottling. Stacey may even provide a link to a YouTube video of the machine in operation.

I'm In Love. As we have been short staffed (due to vacations, holidays and illness), I have been working LOTS in the brewery... and I must proclaim my love for our new barrel pump. Moving beer in and out of bourbon barrels is so much easier now. A task that used to take the better part of a day is now performed in just a couple of hours.

Brewing: A double batch of Bitter Woman IPA, a double batch of Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale and a single batch of Headless Man Amber Alt.

Bottling: Rocky's Revenge (2 cases of mislabels) and Three Beaches Honey Blonde (Friday). Mislabels are available when the Tasting Room opens... please do not call or email and ask for cases to be held; they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Since I last penned for the newsletter, everything is finally up and running the way it should (well, the equipment anyway). It is a rather exciting time with all of the new equipment actually operating. Our new brite tank has tremendous cooling capacity, which our original brite lacks. A new product/CIP pump allows us to perform multiple operations simultaneously. And our new fermenter should improve our capacity, especially during crunch times (like when Gemuetlichkeit Oktoberfest, Hop Whore Imperial IPA and Painted Ladies Pumpkin Spice all come out at roughly the same time). Now it is just down to a matter of employees… sometimes it feels like I am herding cats!

Down ‘N Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout Back On Tap!

We are bottling and kegging our final batch of Down ‘N Dirty today (hopefully). Should be on tap in the Tasting Room for some time to come. We siphoned off a bit to age in both Rye and Bourbon Whiskey Barrels. Don’t know when we will be bringing that out… probably in time for the Great Taste of the Midwest.

Who’s Your Daddy Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter To Make A Return.

It was our very first Brewers Gone Wild! beer and we are set to brew it again today. It took a little bit of time to look through the archives back to the first brew of 2006, but I was able to find the details of this most wonderful beer. The beer was proclaimed so “perfect” by some that I was reluctant to ever brew it again for fear of this next round not living up to the original. I am hoping that six years will have dulled the memory a bit… although it almost seems that the recollections of its perfection have grown over time. This will be the inaugural brew into our new fermenter named “Stacey”.
