And... we are getting ready to distribute our beer out of Wisconsin for the first time. No, not to Illinois but to Minnesota. With all of the recent turmoil with Bell's Brewing in Illinois and the reportedly corrupt nature of the Chicago-area beer business we decided to avoid Illinois for awhile. And some of the distributors in Minnesota seem genuinely excited to carry our brands (although others, for some reason, do not). So now having to learn the Minnesota statutes and alter our distribution agreement to match the requirements of Minnesota law. I am not an attorney but I play one at the brewery.

From the latest newsletter...
"Brewing: Currently brewing the first two batches of a triple batch of our next installment in the Brewers Gone Wild! series. We are revisiting our Imperial IPA, Hop Wh0re (name altered to try an make it through your corporate content filters). I suspect we will be packaging the beer near the end of the month. I had truly forgotten what a Hop Wh0re this beer really is... we will be using over 175 pounds of relatively high alpha acid (and expensive) hops for this beer."

Twin Cities Distribution To Occur Soon. That's right, your favorite Tyranena beers will soon be arriving in the Twin Cities... including the Brewers Gone Wild! series. Our Twin Cities distributor, Alcorn Beverage, is scheduled to pick up sometime next week. Teri and Danella had lots of fun this week assembling a whole bunch of Legendary Collection variety packs. We hope all of you up in the Twin Cities will appreciate their efforts.

Imperial Rye Porter Attempt #2. Okay, I guess since we are removing the oatmeal, it is really just attempt #1. We hope to avoid the concrete-like mash that we experienced last time and actually get some wort into the kettle. In addition to removing the oatmeal, we changed most of the rye from rye malt to pregelatinized rye flakes and will change our mashing to include a beta glucan rest. If Benji and I are still brewing at midnight on Thursday you will know that it did not go well again. Oh yeah, we also received an additional 11 rye whiskey barrels so we are anxious to fill them.

From the newsletter...

Quote
Imperial Rye Porter - Batch 2 of 3. Today we are brewing our second batch of our next Brewers Gone Wild! series beer... which reminds me that we should probably get working on a label pretty soon. For today's batch, we have modified the recipe slightly... we have reduced the amount of rye that we are using from around 25% of the total malt load to closer to 20%. Hopefully... it will not take four hours to transfer from the lauter tun to the kettle this time. If it is 7:00 p.m. and Benji and I are still brewing tonight... you know we once again had processing problems.

Dirty Old Man Release Delayed. Six weeks after submitting our Statement of Process for Dirty Old Man Imperial Rye Porter we received a rejection notice from the government. Turns out I made a small mistake on the form (yes, occassionally even I err)... one which should have been completely obvious to the examiner... one that only required a phone call for clarification... but instead they decided to wait 10 days after rejecting it to send the rejection letter to us. I made the ONE word change and resubmitted the modified Statement of Process to the government this past Saturday. We'll see how long it takes them this time around. Of course, we can't get label approval from the government until we have approval of our Statement of Process...  I can't wait until we also have to have beers tested for nutritional information... not sure we will ever be able to get a new specialty beer out the door!

Hop Contract Crop Year 2008. With all of the hop pricing and availability issues front and center... I thought I would get a head start on contracting for our estimated needs for 2009. Well, they cannot yet quote any prices... but their estimates are that hop prices with double to triple over our last year's contract... which was up significantly from the year before. And one of our hop styles is simply not available any more... I have not yet found out if our 2007 Crop Year contract is going to be met... and if not, if we can even get a replacement hop variety. New contract terms will also have us not able to get product until almost mid-January will full payment for entire year due by the beginning of May. Will definitely end up being a cash flow issue as time goes on. Our primary hop supplier is too busy to contract for the 2008 crop as they are scurrying to meet the needs of more than 200 brewers who had not contracted and are having serious problems getting hops at all!

Greetings fellow Tyranenaeans,

Gotta love the government... it's nice to know there is someone out there looking out for us!

Federal Government Approves Dirty Old Man Statement of Process. It only took two months... but we finally received notice from the TTB (Tax and Trade Bureau, formerly a unit of the gun-toting ATF) that they approved our Statement of Process for Dirty Old Man. However... in the interest of protecting and informing consumers, they insisted that we place a Statement of Composition on the label. And depending upon who examines the Statement of Process... when the same person examines the Statement of Process... and who examines the Certificate for Label Approval... you end up getting a large variety of statments or type styles and sizes required for said Statement of Composition. So... our label was originally going to read:

    Brand:  Dirty Old Man
Style:  Imperial Rye Porter Aged In Rye Barrels
Notes:  Dark Black With A Cappuccino Head.  Full-Bodied With Modest Carbonation. Spicy Rye, Chocolaty Malt And Balanced Oak Barrel Flavors.

After the government got involved for your protection, the label will now likely read:

    Brand:  Dirty Old Man
Style:  Imperial Rye Porter Aged In Rye Whiskey Barrels
Government Statement Of Composition:  40% Malt Beverage Aged In Rye Whiskey Barrels, 60% Malt Beverage.

Don't you now feel better informed?  Of course, we don't know if the label will yet be approved... and the web site for submitting labels for approval is currently down for maintenance. We'll see how quickly this proceeds...

Brewing: This week we made a batch of Root Beer yesterday and are currently brewing a double batch of Imperial Coffee Oatmeal Porter.... for a special version of the Devil Made Me Do It that will be released sometime in 2008.

That should change now that Bill Wirtz is dead. Both the beer business and the Blackhawks should improve in Illinois. We celebrated that day. Sad, but true. That guy started an effort in the Illinois Congress to get any alcohol retailers banned from shipping to Illinois. Only the originator of the product could send to Illinois residents (winery or brewery, for example). Single dumbest idea I had ever seen from that asshole. And that prick had many many ####ing dumb ideas. They claimed it was in the customers best interest. Complete and utter bullshit.

Greetings fellow Tyranenaeans,

I admit it.  I am an addict. I am addicted to the caffeine in Diet Coke. And I am now at the start of my biannual resolution to give up Diet Coke... and am suffering the consequences... as are all around me. I pity the poor State Trooper that called to talk to me yesterday... and the people at the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau...

Dirty Old Man Label Rejected By TTB. Wouldn't you know it... the government seems to be doing its best to delay the release of this beer. As I relayed last week... the government mandated a rather wordy  Statement of Composition for the beer label. The Statement of Composition was so long that we did not have room for an actual beer description... and so poorly conveyed the deliciousness that will be in the bottle that we labeled it "Government Statement of Composition." Well, apparently the government, which mandated that we put that statement on the label, did not wish to be identified with said statement... that it somehow implies that they are endorsing the product. So we have resubmitted the label with the changed statement:

    Required Statement of Composition:*
40% Malt Beverage Aged In Rye Whiskey Barrels, 60% Malt Beverage
*Statement Required By An Entity We Cannot Identify.

Did I mention that I am undergoing caffeine withdrawal? We'll see if this passes muster. The government also questioned the relevance of the statement of the caricature "Want Some Candy?" for the brand Dirty Old Man and sought an explanation...  I wonder what the government is trying to protect us from with that one.

"Dirty Old Man Label Rejected, Rejected, Rejected, Rejected, Rejected And Finally Accepted. This could probably be called the Government Always Gets What They Want or You Can't Fight City Hall. The label ultimately was approved... after changing all sorts of things repeatedly until the folks at the TTB were satisfied. Not the label I would have chosen... but if it finally gets the Dirty Old Man out the door it will work for me. We now have the labels on order and, without yet hearing back from the supplier, expect that we will be bottling the Dirty Old Man Imperial Rye Porter Aged In Rye Whiskey Barrels in roughly three weeks. Speaking of which...

Dirty Old Man Now Blended And In The Fermenter. Earlier this week we transferred the Dirty Old Man that was aging in Rye Whiskey Barrels into the fermenter that was maturing the non-barrel-aged portion of the beer. Tasted it yesterday morning and it was delightful... with constantly evolving flavors in the mouth as time went on... but that was also when the beer was rather cold. For me... at least as best as I can remember... the rye was pretty pronounced along with the mild roastiness of the porter came out early... then a little hit of alcohol and some of the rye whiskey flavors... then vanilla... and then back to the mild roastiness. But my memory is pretty bad so it could have been in a different order... or slightly different flavors... When the beer warmed up it was a little different... but since that was later in the day my taste buds were no longer fresh. It will be interesting to see how carbonation will alter the flavor profile. Oh, by the way... we did set aside one Rye Whiskey Barrel of Dirty Old Man that we will not blend... and will be putting on tap in the Tasting Room... for an over the top showing of what the Rye Whiskey Barrel enhances the Imperial Rye Porter."

I tried the uncarbonated Dirty Old Man on Saturday at the brewery.  Surprisingly, I found it to be chewy with smoke flavor. The rye sourness is well-balanced with the roastiness of the porter with the alcohol heat lingering behind - not insistent, but just enough to let you know that you're a Big Kid.  It should have been bottled today in spite of the delay of the arrival of the labels.  Goes on tap at the brewery this week.

In chat a few nights ago, I mentioned that the Devil Made Me Do It I was drinking at the time smelled and tasted of silage.  The friend who gave that bottle to me agreed with me as we were discussing it yesterday -- she got the same flavors out of her bottle from the same four-pack.  Braconid and TT in particular expressed some concern, as they were still holding some.  So, kids, if you have some, drink a bottle yourself before (instead of?) you start trading it off.

Next Beer In Brewers Gone Wild! Series:  Devil Over A Barrel - Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee Imperial Oatmeal Porter. Jessie (our Beer Ambassador) and Mindy (Mug Clubber, Bartender) both were begging me to brew The Devil Made Me Do It! again... but we had to change things up just a bit. We aged approximately 60 percent of the beer in bourbon barrels for just under 4 months and just dry-beaned the remaining batch a couple of days ago. If I have the energy, we will be blending (yes, we went with a blend so the bourbon and barrel character blends well with the beer and does not dominate it) the barrel-aged beer into the fermenter this weekend. We are currently scheduled to bottle the Devil Over A Barrel next Wednesday... and I would imagine it will be going on tap in the Tasting Room that same night. Arriving at stores within a week or two after that...

Greetings Tyranenaeans,

The Devil Over A Barrel. Stacey here. Rob's bottling the sweet elixir that is Devil Over A Barrel right now but we wanted to make sure that everyone got a chance to make it down to the brewery tonight for our first tapping of this beer, the newest in the Brewers Gone Wild! series. It's an imperial oatmeal porter brewed with coffee and aged in bourbon barrels.... Whew! That's a mouthful!

Wondering what that might taste like? Well, Benji just said it was "wicked." Teri, mug clubber and treasured slave to the brewery, said that she thought it was balanced and suttle in both the coffee and bourbon flavors. I, myself, thought that it was VERY coffee tasting, with the coffee smell and taste coming first and the bourbon coming later. Jessie is taking a nap after drinking several glasses, beginning at 10:20 am.... just kidding. But Jessie also agreed with Teri that it was well balanced.

The beer will be making its way to the Twin cities this weekend and our Milwaukee area distributors are picking up later this week. Madison should be picking up at the beginning of next week. Locally, say in Jefferson County, the beer won't be available until May, unless you come buy it directly at the brewery. Every place else in Wisconsin will see its arrival sometime in between.

Devil over a Barrel=Great stuff! Only think I didn't like is how the bourbon covers up the coffee too much. Still, excellent brew!

shared a bottle of dirty old man with some brewers at Hamilton's last night during the CBC and they loved it, Matt from Alesmith thought it was great.

They're having the Minnesota tapping party at the Happy Gnome next week.  Think I'm gonna skip it.  Don't see any reason to pay $6-8 for a 10oz pour of it.

hope you all aren't feeling neglected by having your newsletter come from me (Stacey) for the past few weeks. Sorry to say that Rob is once again bottling today and still too busy to think, let alone type out his aggrivations.... Now, it's not that Rob loves you any less, it's just that with Benji out recovering, he's been a little stressed out and has had a little less time to sit down at his computer. You'd think that this would be better on my end of things; if Rob's not in the office because he's slaving back in the brewery, he can't gripe at me, right? Nope. Now I get hit-n-run gripings instead! It's been terrible without Benji here!

Benji's Recovery. Benji stopped in yesterday after an appointment with his doctor. I'm guessing things are healing nicely because he's been released to return to the brewery as of Monday, April 28. Of course, he'll be on lighter duty for a little while.... but at least we're on the road to having our 2nd brewer back! And getting some things back to normal around here.... whatever normal really is!

ABSOLUTELY the Last Call for Brunch at the Brewery! First thing is that I've LOWERED the price for brunch. Instead of $17.00, it'll be $13.00. Yay, right? Anyway, I've gotten a dozen or so RSVPs for May 4... but I have to get back to the caterers no later than FRIDAY (that'd be 4/25). So if you want to put your name in for brunch you better do it RIGHT NOW! Menu will include: scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrown bake, chicken cordon bleu, au gratin rice bake, fresh fruit, tomato juice, oj and your choice of Tyranena beer!

New Summer Hours. I can't believe that I'm really typing this but.... From Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, your beloved brewery will be open 7 days a week for your enjoyment and Beer Garden beverage consumption! On Memorial Day and Labor Day we'll have some special hours, but between those two holidays, our Tasting Room and Beer Garden hours will be:

4:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Monday thru Thursday
3:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday & Saturday
11:00 am to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday

We will also have special extended hours on
Memorial Day (5/26/08) and Labor Day (9/2/08)
from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.

The current bid for all six 4-packs is $200.00. Submit your bid by email. What are you willing to pay for these impossible-to-find beers? You can check our BGW! page in the evening to see what the highest bid is for that day. Bids will be excepted via email only through Tuesday, April 29th.
