Its good.  Bit winey, not too sweet.  Funny enough, in our blind tasting I HATED it.  Mind you I'd had it 20 times before that.  I thought something was wrong with the bottle

Which did happen at our imperial stout tasting with a Speedway

Trimming the tree with Belgian Christmas beer is tradition.  Here's the path the wife and I took

Jan De Lichte is great, haven't seen it in years though. They make a nice BSDA (recreated extinct style "Dubbel Special Belge") that would fit this thread pretty nicely. Cuvee Angelique.

It definitely is, and i'd probably pay that ransom once, but would rather buy 11.2 oz for $5 in the shop.

Actual Belgians.  The hipsters don't drink it which is a blessing most times and a curse in moments like these.  Demand is low so its not hitting the shelves.

I have an ace up my sleeve though...I have a place that has a back log of the stuff and I'm hopeful tomorrow I'll come home with a nice aged selection.  We are decorating the tree tomorrow and that requires copious amounts of Belgian xmas beers.  Its tradition!

Not Belgian, but has anyone had this?

Seems it's a barleywine, and i've seen some old bottles floating around. Harveys Elizabethan was recently on draft... it was bad.

Was there a winner?

I had a 4-pk of Rahr's BA winter warmer, and that was surprisingly good. Aged in Jack Daniels barrels, lots of vanilla and toasted almond flavor.

Although not from Belgium, the Icelandic one was the clear winner

A short history of Belgian Christmas beer

Interesting read if you're into historical beer stuff, the author proposes Christmas beer was imported from UK and Belgian brewers later made their own versions in the 20th century.

Seeing as how there's so much experimentation and use of spices in Belgian beer, i'm surprised it wasn't already in practice.

Here's my short list for 2019, mainly stuff I haven't ticked.

Gouden Carolus Cuvée Van De Keizer
Kasteel Winter
Corsendonk Christmas

Anything I should add?

Had that one before, but good call. Mostly just trying to tick some less common ones, but I was surprised how many I haven’t had. Not a huge fan of spiced stuff but BSDA I can get behind.

Seriously find the Einstock Christmas beer.  It may be the best beer you drink all year.

We have discussed this ad nauseam and there was no consensus but the correct answer is Dupont because that would be the only reasonable interpretation of what was written.

I wasn't referring to the beer but the ranking system.  Basically, you rank as seen.  In other words, you could place your numbers as written over the beers and it would be obvious what you thought was number one.

However, some here argue you number left to right, in this case one through four, then rearrange the numbers so that the preference is ranked from left to right. I always found this confusing and needlessly complex but the northeast guys swore by it

Picked up a four-pack of N'Ice Chouffe last night. Scurried home with my prize and drank two of them.

Fucking magnificent. If it's not on your Christmas beer list yet, it should be. Dead-by date of January, 2021.

Locally, $9.49 for the four-pack. Hard to beat <$2.50 / glass for a beer of this quality.

Well, if you ever make it down to Milwaukee, stop in at Discount Liquor on 51st and Oklahoma.

They have a HUGE assortment of fabulous Belgian beers including great big magnums or "jereboams".

Bring a LOT of $$$.

Can't remember the last time I was in Discount.  Probably 10 years or so.  The problem is that almost every time I'm in MKE, it is for family stuff, so there is little time for me to venture out on my own.

I wonder if the Woodman's in Menomonee Falls would have a better selection than the one in GB.  I'll be down there the day after Thanksgiving.

Woodman's Menomonee Falls = Woodman's Oak Creek, in my experience.

They'll have *some* nice Belgian stuff (La Chouffe, St. B, Delirium, et al) but not so much of the other stuff (St. F, Corsendonk, et al).

And NONE of the more exotic stuff.

I wonder if the Woodman's in Menomonee Falls would have a better selection than the one in GB.  I'll be down there the day after Thanksgiving.

been a year or so since i've been to the Falls Woodman's but i always stop there on my way out from the office which (was) right up the street.

it's roughly the same. they have Three Floyd's and a couple Milwaukee local breweries that we don't get but it's nothing special.

I haven't seen ANY Belgian Xmas beers at the GB Woodman's for a couple of years now.   :(

Well, if you ever make it down to Milwaukee, stop in at Discount Liquor on 51st and Oklahoma.

Can't remember the last time I was in Discount.  Probably 10 years or so.  The problem is that almost every time I'm in MKE, it is for family stuff, so there is little time for me to venture out on my own.

How about your fancy suburban liquor store?  Do they have Belgian Xmas beers?

For anyone near a Total Wine, they always start discounting all Xmas beers shortly after the New Year. I typically get Belgian Xmas beers for half off. Hard to say no to a Scaldis Xmas or gift packs of Corsendonk Xmas for half off.
