Beer of the Month - May 2022
« on: May 01, 2022, 04:39:03 PM »
Picked up 4 packs of both of these today, to kick off the month.  Even though it was a cool and dreary day for May here, the Hefe was refreshing and quaffable.  Looking forward to more of these throughout the summer months.

Sorry couldn’t read the fine print on the hefe weiss bier. :old:

I fully intend to go back to my roots and drink a few hefes on draft at the last remaning German bars in town. :ale:

I've got some great options at my favorite local shop... starting with Tucher Helles Hefe. Nothing out of this world, but super clean and drinkable. I'll easily finish off this 4 pack.

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier

Might as well start off with a classic.  Subtle aromas/flavors of bread, banana, clove and lemon esters.  Feels well carbonated but I'm a little disappointed in the head retention.

Sadly I don't have a 22oz weizen glass to pour into and really let it foam.

I was excited to see this in the tall boy cans at my store this year

Collective Arts - Wheat Ale with Earl Grey

According to the website, it's a Belgian witbier with Earl Grey tea instead of orange peel. The tea is there, but the coriander is more prominent.  Pretty good, would be nice on a hot day.

JP Calabaza Blanca shared a bottle with the crew at a National Homebrew Day hangout

Tart, funky witbier with noticeable coriander.  Orange peel doesn't come through a lot with all the funk and oakiness that's going on.

Also a homebrewed American wheat made by our host.

Aslin No Backsies Hefeweivzen.

Not bad, just pretty much liquid banana laffy taffy. Little/no clove to balance.

And now for my next number, i’d like to return to the classics. Salvaged this from a suburban beer graveyard. Case in point, these…

Clear, deep golden hue, with a thick and creamy head.  Subtle clove and banana, and little on the sweet side for the style, but still refreshing.  Pretty good value at 7.99 for a 4-pack of 500 ml cans.

I think I forgot to post the other night - Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen

Darker than I expected, with more malt/caramel sweetness. So perhaps it's more of a smoked dunkelweizen? Banana and clove yeast character  alongside the smoke, and that combination, I think along with the sweetness, didn't really do it for me.  I was expecting more of a light, effervescent hefeweizen with some smoke - closer to a Graetzer/Grodziskie in body.

I should give it another try knowing what to expect (maybe in cool weather). I definitely rank it behind the Marzen and the 2 Bocks from Schlenkerla.

I used to not like wheat beers but have found a few I like.  One of the reasons I've liked the beer of the month themes is that I've forced myself to try more beers that I traditionally haven't favored. I found myself finding some I've liked each month.  This month Sunny Little Thing by Sierra Nevada surprised me as a very refreshing beer for the mini heat wave we had yesterday.  It was a super refreshing poolside beer.

Ever since Gumballhead, i've liked the lighter hoppy American Wheats. Can't think of another example offhand, but local breweries seem to do fairly innovative things within the style.

Gumballhead and Indiana City's Yacht Rock are the only two wheats I've bought more of.

Bell's Bright White

Fairly respectable interpretation of a Witbier, with coriander and citrus in the nose and flavor.  Very clear and much less head retention vs a traditional wit, though. Tasty with dinner after mowing the lawn

Crushworthy- Lo-cal citrus wheat ale
Great Lakes Brewing Co.

Meh. Pretty bland, very vague citrus note, thin bodied, low carbonation. Washed down some pizza.

I’d call it “utilitarian”, but that suggests it has a purpose.

Badger State Walloon Witbier

16 oz cans

Straw colored body, with just a slight haziness, and a bright white head that dissipates quickly.  Citrus, coriander, slight tartness.  Light and refreshing.  One of my go-to summer beers.   :ale:

Finally had a wheat beer yesterday. Local place (Guilford Hall Brewery) hefe.  Man, one of the cleanest hefes and easy drinking for a US version.

Erdinger Weissbier

Hazy gold color, big white head but poor retention. Nose and flavor are mostly honey and clove. Very low banana ester and a bit of lemony tartness on the palate. Medium light body and plenty of tingly carbonation.

Avery - Liliko'i Kepolo

Belgian Witbier style with passionfruit.  Hazy orange-gold with a brief, fluffy head.  Tropical fruit aroma with hints of coriander and citrus.  More of the same in the flavor, with pronounced tartness from the fruit, and a soft, bready wheat mouthfeel.  Really quite tasty on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon.

Even if May ended earlier this week.

Upland Wheat Ale

Wheat ale with coriander and orange peel - sounds like a Witbier to me, though it doesn't say so on the can.  Smells like a wit, tastes like a wit.  Pretty solid one, too - crisp and a bit lemony.  Spice is there but not overpowering.  Recommended if you like the style.
