When we were at Laschet’s last week celebrating BL’s fleeting bachelorhood, a couple old guys broke into song, singing Ein Prosit. I don’t think i’ve ever heard this “alternate refrain” though:

“An alternative closing phrase from the band leader is "Prost ihr Säcke!" (Cheers, you ball-sack!), to which the crowd replies in unison "Prost du Sack!" (Cheers, you ball-sack!).”

Picked up a 4 pack of that last weekend ... surprisingly not bad, especially for the price.

Hofbrau Oktoberfest - delightful
St. George Oktoberfest - awful
Bells Oktoberfest - decent, but I should have just bought more Hacker Pshorr.

And, the SN is very good this year.

I take that back. Got through half the bottle before the metallic and other industrial flavors started to overtake the beer.

Had a couple Sam Adams O'fest at a wedding last night. Out of a bottle so not much in the way of sensory analysis.  Didn't seem overly sweet though.

Drinking this right now ... Tried Lakefront and SN Ofests earlier today.  They were OK, but this Festbier is really hitting the spot.

Went through another six this weekend.  Local festbiers are set to start being tapped in the next week or so.

My local boys at Fortlandia have both a Marzen AND a Festbier on right now.  Will be getting up there sometime this week.
Forgot they're closed on Tuesday  :sadbanana:

But one of the owners was there getting some yeast starters going, and let me in for a few samples :pickle:

The Marzen was really good.  Toasty/bready but with some late noble hop for a crisp finish. Hopped with a mix of Hallertauer, Tettnang and Saaz.
The Festbier was more like a scaled up Helles, with a little bit of Munich and Vienna malts for complexity. Still pale gold in color and less noticeable hop character (they used all Hallertauer)

I could easily down a pint of either, or of each.

Weihenstephaner Festbier.

Pale yellow-gold, rocky white head.  Spicy/floral noble hop nose.
Intensely bready malt flavor, low bitterness and low-to-medium noble hop flavor. Crisp, clean, beautiful.

edit: hop flavor may be on the high side of medium as I take a few more sips.  Still a spectacular beer.

Local beer fest today, had a handful of O'fests and Festbiers from
- Chapman's (Angola, IN)
- Hop River (Fort Wayne, IN)
- Off Square (Crown Point, IN)
- Goodwood (Louisville)
- A couple from my local homebrew club

Plus a very nice Vienna Lager from Junk Ditch (Fort Wayne) and various others not relevant to this thread.

Cracked open the Narragansett O'fest. Definitely not sweet. Hops are more pronounced than in most examples, almost to the point of overpowering the malt.

Not unpleasant to drink, but I think the bitterness and hop flavor are too high for the style. Hop balance is more like a Vienna Lager or maybe an Altbier.

Rheingeist Franz - I really liked this one.  Toasty/malty, no caramel sweetness.  Just enough hops to make for a dry finish without stepping on the malt flavor.

Old Nation Oktoberfest.  I like this one, although it's a bit hop-forward like the Narragansett was.  Not quite as much but still steps on the malt a little bit.  Avoids caramel sweetness, which is always a plus.

Great Lakes Oktoberfest

Pretty traditional Marzen style - less hoppy than the Narragansett and Old Nation.  Rich, bready malt with just a trace of caramel. Enough hops to keep it from being cloying and add a little flavor.

Totally unsurprising to get a really good lager (or anything, really) from these guys.

Bell's Oktoberfest

Decent - toasty, not too sweet, a little hops.  Lacks the malty depth of the really good ones. I'm guessing the German breweries are usually decoction-mashing and the American breweries, by and large, are not.

Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest

Strongly malty, more sweetness lingering into the finish than some of the others. On the caramelly side.  Not wild about it.

They used to collaborate with one of the big Munich breweries - are they still doing that? Nothing I could see on the can this year.

Edit: No mention of collab, and they went to the Marzen after doing paler beers recently

Jennings notes that this year’s darker style is a departure from the brewery’s seasonal Oktoberfest offerings of the past few years which was in the style of modern fest biers, such as Helles bock, that began rising to popularity at Oktoberfest in Munich in the 1970s and 1980s.
