Lager Town is never my favorite.  It's always just ok, but I do like the dryness.  Metro seemed pretty sweet especially after the Lager Town, but it had nice bready flavor.

Agreed  ISO a good local Festbier, i'm leaning more towards that end currently. :ale:

Had a good Okto from Sketchbook Brewing recently, would get again.

Oktoberfest might be the style I miss the least since I quit drinking. Best ones I ever had were meh.

This used to be where I was at, but I have learned to appreciate and love them in the last couple years.

There are a lot of flat out bad ones out there, I don't blame you. I prefer the lighter Festbier style these days.

Wolf's Ridge came out with a marzen Oktoberfest, but added a lighter festbier called Septemberfest. I'm on my 2nd six pack in two weeks. So well done!

Big fan of that place when I was there a few years ago.

They had great beer at Fobab a few years back

May have just dropped $$ on a rye barrel barleywine and extended age Dire Wolf stout

Picked up some yesterday, but I was disappointed with it.  Picked up a subtle "tea" flavor in it.

Drinking now, seems pretty good to me. Baked apple, toasted grains, a little nutty, pretty mellow after a slow pour. No residual sweetness, which i’ve grown to dislike. I can’t think of a sweet German Oktberfest, it seems exclusively American.

I'll have to give it another go, but the first one I had seemed sweeter to me than another Ofest I had been drinking before it (don't recall now which one).

Just speculating, but I think some American breweries use crystal malts as a way to get the color so they can use their standard 2-row or other very pale malt for the bulk of the grist. Crystal malt has some unfermentable sugars that carry a caramel sweetness into the finished beer.

Whereas in Germany I'm guessing Munich malt makes up the majority of the grain bill, giving a darker beer without any crystal malts.

Firestone Walker makes an oak-aged Festbier? :excited:

Might have to lift the boycott for this one.

Rothaus Eiszäpfle Märzen

Bright gold, streamers of carbonation, a fluffy meringue head rises above the glass. Spotty lacing left behind. Aromas of fresh bread dough, sweetish grains, and a slight grassy hop note. Taste is biscuity with lightly sweet bread dough and a light hop bite. Smooth, round feel, just excellent. A prototypical Festbier.

that means pumpkins are right around the corner. Though, it seems like pumpkin beers are not as hot as they used to be.  I remember Southern Tier Pumking came out in late July once.

Are we looking at the pic? It seems that one of those 4 beers is an Octoberfest and the rest are something else.. maybe.

I was specifically referring to the clear link to their "fall seasonal" "Liquid Hoppiness IPA." on the Octoberfest page.

Sounds like SN Ofest will be hard to find this year

All seasonals are IPA https://sierranevada.com/beer/

I'm still seeing the Octoberfest page when you linked it directly.  But it is not on the main beer page.  So, perhapd the O'fest is gone this year.

Unrelated but I had no idea they made a kristalweizen. Wish that would get some distro.

Can a mod pls edit "2021" from the head title? Also is it possible to merge the old Ofest threads?

Helpful to be able to search quickly within one thread, I often go back to look at old posts/ratings from previous years, esp. in the Ofest thread. TIA

I'm going to guess you can probably get some at their Oktoberfest party (but they'll be pushing the hazy) but it won't be in wide distro at all.

New Glarus Staghorn is on shelves in WI...ummm it's the first week of August?

Stupidest, most silly trend that I just don't care to understand - beat everyone else to the market by releasing seasonal beers a full season before they are actually supposed to be out? <_<

Heck, it's so bad now that when it is October, there aren't any O-fests on the shelves at all.

That's actually a good time to have them hit because it would be the only Ofest on the shelves...in October!
Life without beer is too terrible to contemplate.

It's a weird thing, but all distributors want it at this time.     If it's not out of their warehouses by mid-September, it's a problem.

I'm sure you know this already but the "real" Ofest is in Sept. so fest beers being out now or close to now makes sense to me.

Pumpkin beers in the summer however...looking at you Alewerks!

I think the bigger issue is "you don't have a good chance of selling out of Oktoberfest by Oct 31 if you don't start selling them in July"  I'm guessing Ofests are way more popular in August than November.

Dregs of a rep sample, decent enough a bit raw grainy. Dropping in Chicago in a week.

Roaring Table Festbier

Hit the (beer)spot while doing yardwork yesterday. Smooth feel, light and pretty tasty. Biscuit and mellow breadiness.

Weihenstephaner Festbier

Very light and crisp, had a draft at Beer Temple and brought home cans.

Not that most of you are likely to see it, but Mad Anthony's Oktoberfest was quite nice the other night.  Toasty malt, minimal caramel, dry finish with a little noble hop.

They're not bringing it to Great Taste, but I'm seeing quite a few others in the program so I'll be trying several on Saturday.

Had a few stinkers so far this year ...

Stillmank - never been a fan of their Ofest, but it's usually at least drinkable.  Terrible this year.  Battery acid and sweaty socks dipped in maple syrup?  No idea WTF they did this year.

Zambaldi - Another miss.  I like a lot of stuff I've had from them, but they don't do many lagers and don't seem to be good at it.  It's a drinkable beer, but not very close to a Marzen at all.

Potosi - Best of the three, but that's not saying much.  Has an unwelcome undertone of tea in the finish.  Another dud.

Surly Ofest - Good malt balance with noble hops in the finish.  Clean AF.  Damn solid American Ofest.
My friends say I'm like doing the laundry and forgetting the bleach: I'm not as bright as I could be.

Gator to Pols: I bet you wish the last wedding you went to was the one right before yours....

New Realm Bavarian Prince is tasty enough.
Beer. It always seems like such a good idea at the time. What's worse is beer seems like an even better idea after you've had some beer.

I heard if we post Stoney's name 3 times in the Oktoberfest thread, he will appear... :ale:

Any Wisconsin TBS'ers left on the forum see any Jack's Abby Märzen Kellerbier?

Also, has anybody seen the Bitburger Festbier around? Drank through my first dozen Festbiers and need a re-up.

They always seem to have the Bitburger at the areaTotal Wines but I've never had it. If I'm going with a German one it's always one of the Munich big 6 (minus 2, not doing Spaten/Lowenbrau, plus 1, Ayinger). Typically I'd get Hofbrau since that's where I'd spend many hours when there. Maybe I should try Bitburger?
