I heard if we post Stoney's name 3 times in the Oktoberfest thread, he will appear... :ale:

Any Wisconsin TBS'ers left on the forum see any Jack's Abby Märzen Kellerbier?

Also, has anybody seen the Bitburger Festbier around? Drank through my first dozen Festbiers and need a re-up.

They always seem to have the Bitburger at the areaTotal Wines but I've never had it. If I'm going with a German one it's always one of the Munich big 6 (minus 2, not doing Spaten/Lowenbrau, plus 1, Ayinger). Typically I'd get Hofbrau since that's where I'd spend many hours when there. Maybe I should try Bitburger?

Looks like it’s more of an amber Märzen than lighter Festbier. I’m always up to try a new to me import, but won’t get my hopes up.

You talking about the Jack's Abby? I had/have Copper Legend from them and I like it but it is indeed more amber marzen than Fest.

You like Bitburger? Maybe I'll try it some time...

Mobcraft Mobtoberfest is not bad.  A little hoppy for the style, and a touch of caramel, but the hops help dry the finish and there's some nice bready/toasty malt

No, the Bitburger. Haven’t tried it or Jack’s Abby yet.

Just was wondering if the JA is around WI this year, I might have a slim chance of actually seeing it They started doing limited drops there within the last year, but only in a handful of places.

Picked up a 12 pack of the "regular", I'll wait on the barrel aged.

Yeah, I'll pass on a BA Oktoberfest.

Got a bottle just to try. Not a fan.

Half Acre did an oaked version of Lager Town once, it was amazing. Not sure if they just used oak chips, but it was subtle and worked perfectly. A spirit barrel just seems unnecessary.

At $6.99 for 4 500ml I figured why not?

I'll be going back for more. This will be our "crusher" at the fest party.

Trying the Bitburger now. Definitely more marzen than fest. Pretty tasty though.

Drank a few Dovetail Festbiers tonight, also more Märzen than Festbier but very enjoyable. Will keep an eye out for the Tucher, vaguely recall when Resi’s had Tucher bottles.

Only $6.49/4 at a more northern Total Wine so I bought a case for the party. Cheap easy drinking fest beer, 12 liters worth at only ~$3.25/liter. I'll take it

Also bought a 6 pack of Sam Adams Festbier (not Oktoberfest/Marzen) and a 6 of Great Lakes Oktoberfest. Think I'm good on Marzen/Festbier for a little while.

Roaring Table is up in Lake Zurich, they don’t distribute too far yet. Fair State gets to IN, not sure how far though.

Couple of my locals have tapped good ones recently

Fortlandia has both a Festbier and a Marzen on tap (along with Rauchbier and Schwarzbier - 4 of 10 taps!)
2 Toms has a really good Festbier

Both pretty localized, although 2 Toms has a taproom in Fishers now for any Indy folks

Three Sheeps Oktoberfest Märzen

Dark garnet tone, bright clarity, initial finger of foam that fades rapidly, minimal lacing.

Toasted dark bread crust aroma, dry nutty malt character.

Bittersweet taste, bready with a light dried apple ester, specialty malt. Aftertaste is malty with a nearly imperceptible bitterness to balance the malt sweetness. Medium bodied, carb is light, easy going. Overall it’s not bad, maybe a little sweet.

Finally had a marzen this past weekend. It was my fav Bmore brewer (Suspended) and they made a very malty 3.7% version. It was very interesting to get so much out of such a small beer. Got some to take home. Will need to find a time to drink it.

Interesting. I heard complaints that Dovetail's Festbier hybrid was "too boozy" at 6.7%.

Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier - draft 4.3

My go to of the Munich big 6. Spent many hours in Hofbrauhaus in Marienplatz. Still my favorite memory was of this old German regular who lost his shit when some dumb American girl walked out with a masskrug. You'd thought someone stole his dog. Memory aided by the fact that he looked like a cartoon character to begin with.

A case (-1) of one kind to party with and then just a hodge-podge of stuff I've bought to try. I'm expecting and kind of hoping most of it will be gone by Sunday.

I think Americans cheat.  Germans get the rich reddish brown color, most likely from the decoction mashes they do.  I would bet Americans toss some crystal malt in to emulate the color, and bring some unwanted sweetness to the party.

100%. A lot of US versions use caramel and specialty malt, but I think they’re trending more dry these days. Not all though. I tend to avoid syrupy sweet ones i’ve had in the past. The trend towards Festbier is nice too, as I usually like them more.

Picked up a mixed sixer yesterday - 3 German, 3 American
- Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier
- Weihenstephaner Festbier
- Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen
- Sam Adams Octoberfest
- Rheingeist Franz
- Hop River Oktoberfest

Started with the Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier
Festbier style - brilliant pale gold, bready pilsner malt and prominent noble hops.  Like a bigger Munich Helles.  Gorgeous.

Other than the Weihenstephaner, I believe all the rest will be Marzen style, although it's hard to tell with the canned ones.

Drinking a Rheingeist "Franz".  I'm impressed.

Color puts it firmly in the Festbier camp, with no amber/red hues.  Darker than the Paulaner, but still in the style range.

Malt is bready/toasty, no caramel sweetness. Hop bitterness and flavor are on the high side for the style, but don't overpower the malt.  Kind of a Fest/Pils hybrid.  Very enjoyable, but I think the bitterness would wear on my palate if I drank more than one.

Started with the Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier
Festbier style - brilliant pale gold, bready pilsner malt and prominent noble hops.  Like a bigger Munich Helles.  Gorgeous.

I need to check the date on the cans I picked up, mine had a weird oxidized note, kind of musty. Seemed odd, but it happened last year too. <_< I've enjoyed it in the past.

This was my experience with it as well, sample bottle directly from the sales rep that was fresh.

Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen

Copper-gold color. Toasty nose with a bit of noble hop and a little Munich malt grape-y ester. Hops are more assertive in the flavor, although it's nice and toasty as well. Less of the really rich bready character than I expected.  Clean, crisp finish.

Ludwig Festbier - Shared Brewing - STL

Brassy amber gold, bright clarity, huge puffy head after a slow pour. Toasty grains in the aroma, malt forward, clean and dry. Mellow and malty, toasty and grainy again, flavorful but a touch too raw maybe. Light enough to put down easily. Good bellywasher with the excellent margherita pizza from Pizza Champ.

Oktoberfest Festbier - Analytical Brewing, Lexington, IL

Crowler from the source. Light amber, good clarity, a finger of foam and ring of drippy lacing. Aromas of toasted malt and mild apple sweetness. Mellow malty flavor, assertive with some toastiness and minor earthiness in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, smooth feel, carb is soft and easygoing. Subtle noble hop character without the bitterness. Overall this is a nice rendition.

Warsteiner Oktoberfest - Warstein, DE

Deep brassy gold tone, compact yet fluffy head of foam, drippy lacing. Doughy aroma, malt and yeast both present. Light and flavorful, mild bread crust toastiness, vague earthy noble hop aftertaste. Slight malt sweetness initially, becoming dry on the finish. Light creamy feel, good structure and body. Overall i’m glad I got a six of this, and that it’s fresh. More aligned with Festbier in style.

O-Katz (Oachkatzlschwoaf) - Urban Chestnut, Saint Louis, MO

Revisiting an old favorite I haven’t seen in a few years. Canned 7-29-22. Light amber, slight haze, ample foam and a halo of lacing that coats the glass. Aroma is yeasty with some lightly fruity pear esters, more bread crust as it warms up a bit. Smooth and malty, somewhat grainy, mildly perceptible alcohol, earthy noble hop finish. Maybe a tiny hint of papery oxidation. Substantial body, easygoing carbonation. A little heftier than a Festbier, more of a hybrid Märzen in my opinion.

Randomly remembered this obscure Festbier from an old beer review. I was at a dive bar and the owner was drinking a bottle of it. I had to settle for Wurzburger, but he let me keep the label:

Sam Adams Octoberfest

Definitely a Marzen - deep copper brilliantly clear.  Toasty, bready aroma with just a hint of noble hop. Flavor is richly bready and malty, without the caramel sweetness I have noticed in some prior years. Tons of toasty melanoidins, reminiscent of good German examples.  Malty but still crisp, clean finish.

Wolf's Ridge did a foeder aged Ofest that has a deep, earthy profile. Pretty awesome and unique profile.

Cool  Half Acre did an oaked Lager Town once that was probably the best O-fest i've ever had.

My first Hofbrau of the year. Save the best for last...
Beer. It always seems like such a good idea at the time. What's worse is beer seems like an even better idea after you've had some beer.
