I ended up drinking 9 times my body weight in beer, broke three glasses over my head, 7 over others, ordered up 17 hookers for a little afterparty, held a cabbie hostage while running his cab through the Madison capitol doors, and I grabbed gator's ass.

Yeah, I got that part ... how do I know what beers to include?   Any IPA brewed in a state on the West Coast of the US?  What are the criteria?

I think it's just old school clean, clear IPA. I believe lot's of midwestern breweries brew this style.

Doesn't have to be from the West Coast, just in style. Filtered, not sweet or hazy, generally pretty bitter and hop forward. More recently IPA's are identified this way to distinguish them from all the hazy, quasi-IPA's out there. Traditional craft IPA's generally fit the bill, though I think WCIPA's usually go for lighter malts (i.e. no caramel malt).

West Coast IPA

What was once the standard-bearer for the IPA style has now become a sub-style on its own. While West Coast IPAs typically describe standard American IPAs in that they are almost always crystal clear, an orangey golden color, and provide piney, resiny and dank hop flavors.

Of course, because of the meteoric rise of New England IPAs, the more old-school American IPA is having to differentiate itself with this catchy new name for itself.

The West Coast IPA immediately brings to mind surf, sand and good vibes – and it follows up on it with a bright, clear and inviting pour that still deserves credit for its pioneering spirit in the beer world.

This week:

Zilker Parks and Rec Pale Ale - a super easy bitter and dry hoppy. My local favorite and a go-to.  :ale:

Modern Times Dungeon Map West Coast IPA - the first six pack of this I bought in late May was fantastic and this one tastes a little old. If it was fresh, it would be a lot better.

H A N D S

Meet Sticky Hands. Offering a luscious blend of flavor and drinkability, this Hop Experience Ale features ample additions of sticky, lupulin-packed hops, grown in the Pacific Northwest. The result is an aromatic blast of citrus, tropical fruit, and dank herb that transitions into resinous hop flavor and a delightfully balanced finish.

Grains | Best Ale, 2-row, Pale Wheat, Carafoam
Though Sticky Hands is known for delivering a truly powerful hop experience, its carefully orchestrated grain bill provides critical balance. We constructed Sticky Hands' malt profile to meld with its lively hop character, resulting in an incredibly flavorful and drinkable beer.

Hops | REDACTED
We'd love to share Sticky Hands' hopping regime with you, but as Tier-2C classified data, doing so would violate national security protocol and several international treaties.

What we can tell you is that Sticky Hands is brewed with an emphasis on abundant hop flavor—with gentle bitterness giving way to waves of floral and fruity aromatics. This luscious blend of flavor and drinkability is achieved through massive late hop additions across three different stages, custom-designed hop extract, and dry-hopping that utilizes 2x the hops as those added to the kettle.

Zambaldi (Green Bay, WI) Yard Games IPA

"Our refreshing IPA is packed with flavor from Citra and Centennial hops and is the perfect pairing whether you prefer bags, ladder ball, or giant Jenga."

5.3% ABV

Drinkable, but unremarkable.  I like the hop profile, but it needs a bit more, as the malt lingers in the finish.

OK, but there are many better ones available.

Less talk, more action.  So interesting, I never noticed this part of the patio slanted.  I wonder if that is new

Quote
Hops, used artfully, can be a lyrical journey for the palate. What you have here is the liquid equivalent of some old school classic punk rock poetry. We took the path less traveled 25 years ago, and it could be accurately argued we were a bit noisy in our adventures co-pioneering the West Coast style IPA. People heard that noise and joined us in the hoppy mosh pit, and the path has gotten even more lively since then. We based this recipe on the classics, with citrusy-piney Centennial, Chinook and Columbus hops, plus a dash of ‘new classic’ Citra for good measure. Big yet refreshing, bold yet nuanced. Undeniably LOUD. Just as we like it.

A true old-school classic: FatHead's Head Hunter.

Malty for an IPA, but it's clean and bready - no caramel. Moderate haze, rocky head and a big resiny hop punch.

:excited:

Got a WCIPA on deck for this evening from a newer Chicago brewery. "Vaguely Stylish: Paisley" by Midwest Coast.

"Paisley leans heavily on Chinook and Centennial hops while letting Cascade take a snooze in the back."

Got a WCIPA on deck for this evening from a newer Chicago brewery. "Vaguely Stylish: Paisley" by Midwest Coast.

"Paisley leans heavily on Chinook and Centennial hops while letting Cascade take a snooze in the back."

This was pretty good. TIL: The owner of this brewery is the son of some billionaire venture capitalist who once owned the San Jose Sharks.

CBC Bodhi is such a good beer. It's been a while but this thread reminded me to pick up a sixer.

I also grabbed a Three Floyds Cheer Team. Never heard of it, but it was just delivered and it said it was a DIPA. Not bad at all, but not sure it gets categorized as a West Coast IPA  :sadbanana:

This thread reminded me ... I miss New Glarus Hop Hearty.  How long has it been since they brewed that?

I think that was the first New Glarus I ever bought in like 2008.

Decent if unspectacular IPA from Summit City Brewerks last night.

Not really a huge fan of the brewery, but my work team was getting together in person for the first time in 18 months. So that was kinda cool.

Had one of my favorite beer names/labels last night: Star Chicken Shotgun from Greenbush

Wunderjack - WCIPA collab between Breakside and Barley Brown's.  This is one of the best IPAs I've ever had.

Volatile Substance from Von Ebert. This is their flag ship IPA and it's pretty damn good.
