Visiting LA
« on: June 10, 2021, 12:14:27 AM »
I'm looking for gold in them thar hills!

I am visiting in late July. If I could hit up 1 or 2 spots max, where should I go?
- I will be staying close to Dodger's Stadium (should have access to a ride)
- I've visited before (in 2011) and can't even remember the one brewery I visited (didn't rate them) and drank some Eagle Rock beers at Verdugo bar
- I will be there M-Th

TIA

It was many years ago, but the Stuffed Sandwich was pretty awesome, I think relatively close to Dodger stadium too, but definitely don't quote me on that, as I had a local driving me around.

Should we take a cab home, Jesus?
Shit man, we can hoof it from here.
I know you can walk on water...
But can you walk on this much beer?

Didn't sound correct to me. Checked it out online.

The Force is what gives a brewer his power. It's an energy field created by yeast. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It converts polysaccharides to ethyl alcohol.

Distance is not that big of a deal. Not into ticking but what are beer experiences I should try to have in LA.  Are there really worthwhile bars or breweries. Same for sparkling champagne or a distillery. Is there something that is worth experiencing?

I am tempted by Stuffed Sandwich, seems like it hasn't changed over the years.

Says it's a "full rack" and also 4 lbs. Wouldn't a full rack of beef ribs be a lot more than that?
The photo I posted could be an individual serving from the plate, since there's only 2 ribs there.
I just stumbled on it randomly on google maps, and it was kinda near Dodgers Stadium.

Good article on it, video in instagram link:
https://www.lamag.com/digestblog/dish-of-the-year-2018/

The Preparation

After a 24-hour soy-garlic-ginger marinade, the bone-in short rib (from a marbled section of the belly) is wood-smoked for four to six hours. It’s removed once tender but not falling apart, then wrapped in plastic to seal in the juices.

The Presentation

Reserved at least 48 hours in advance, the short rib is wheeled to its lucky owners and carved tableside. Every carver has a different technique, Johnson says. Thin slices are laid on a platter, while fatty scraps and bones are whisked to the kitchen.

The Accompaniments

Salt-and-pepper sesame oil, house kimchi and chile paste, daikon pickles, shiso leaf, rice paper, and various lettuces are served alongside for DIY wraps. For the grand finale, a pot of beef-scrap fried rice arrives showered in shaved horseradish.

Distance is always a problem in LA due to traffic.  I'm not talking about distance in terms of how the crow flies, I mean "how long will it take for you to get there".

I haven't been to Stuffed Sandwich in 10+ years.  I'm sure its still good but probably not the same since Sam passed.

If distance isn't an obstacle, then definitely El Segundo to get your hop fix in.  There are a lot of breweries in down town, fairly close to Dodgers Stadium

El Segundo is relatively close to the LAX, as is the Firestone Walker outpost, also Three Weavers... those are great stops right off the plane or before you fly out.

My body got me Blind Pig, Heady Topper, and Kriek Boon (someone did a good job at a beer store with those recs). That is all I've drank and done beer-wise.

But I had food from here (though, not for me):
https://www.philippes.com/

and ate some West Coast oysters. Also went up to the Griffith Observatory.

Is this the Boon Selection Kriek that's on draft? My local has this now, just trying to get in there at a decent time.

No, its is the the regular Kriek Boon half bottle from 2016. I somehow end up drinking these more often than any other kriek. It was a welcomed beer last night with the ludicrously strong flower my friend is sharing.
