June 2021 Beer of the Month Club - Lawnmower beers
« on: May 26, 2021, 02:29:28 PM »
Helles, kolsch, pils - I really don't fucking care they're all basically the same thing to me.

June is officially lawnmower beer month.

I ended up drinking 9 times my body weight in beer, broke three glasses over my head, 7 over others, ordered up 17 hookers for a little afterparty, held a cabbie hostage while running his cab through the Madison capitol doors, and I grabbed gator's ass.

Had a Pilsner Urquell in the fridge but drank it after mowing earlier in the week.  So good.  Will likely grab 1-2 more when I'm out tomorrow

Picked up more Urquell, some Bell's Lager of the Lakes and a case of Coors Banquet, which is my go-to lawnmower/shower beer in the summer.

I have a bunch of neck-down work planned over the next couple of weeks so I bought a 30 pack of my favorite blue collar beer (PBR).  Just in time for June.  I don't have a lawn so I had to guess.

Had a Legend Pilsner on the deck at the brewery today.  Really solid beer.   Michael Jackson actually wrote about it at least once, back when Legend was the only brewery in town.  Legend has been though a few brewers in the interim, but I don’t think they’ve messed with the recipe, and it seems they can still churn it out.

Also had a Hardywood Pils & Richmond Lager this evening - both are good, but the Legend beats them both.

Sorry, no pictures this time around.

Bell's Lager of the Lakes (Bohemian Pilsner) is pretty damn good. Not quite Urquell class but a fine example of the style.

Started a couple days early, because WEEKEND.

Went to Ahnapee Brewing's newish location in the GB 'burbs.  First beer I had was a Helles.  Decent enough, but served way too cold.

Today I started off with Door County Brewing Co. League Night Lager ... 4.2% ABV unfiltered lager, meant for pounding at softball games, etc.  Refreshing, but has an odd sweetness in the finish with hints of canned corn (DMS?).  Not terrible, but too many other better options out there.

Badger State Peninsula Pils.  Hadn't seen this in can for a couple of years, so I grabbed a couple of 4 packs.  Pale straw color with a bright white head.  Well balanced, with a clean, grainy finish.  Solid beer, very refreshing, perfect for summer.

I find the term "lawnmower beers" a bit disrespectful to these wonderful styles. But anyway.........

For me it all begins and ends with Weihenstephaner.

All through the pandemic the best German beer I could get up here (locally) was Weihenstephaner Pilsner. And you know what, I didn't really mind that at all (although I would have enjoyed more variety).

Right now, I burn through at least a case of Weihenstephaner Pilsner every week, and recently I bought a load of Weihenstephaner Helles (cans) from Beer Temple. It's outstanding.

I also cautiously bought just a four pack of Gaffel Kolsch (cans) from Beer Temple and already wish I had bought more. Jever and Reissdorf are very good too.

So, to kind of summarize.......

TOP 5 FAVORITE HELLES

1. Weihenstephaner Original Lager / Helles
2. Andechs Vollbier Hell
3. Hofbrau Original Lager
4. Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold
5. Augusteiner Lagerbier Hell

TOP 5 FAVORITE PILSNER

1. Weihenstephaner Pilsner
2. Ayinger Bavarian Pils
3. Wurzburger Hofbrau Premium Pils
4. Pilsner Urquell
5. Trumer Pils

TOP 5 FAVORITE KOLSCH

1. Reissdorf Kolsch
2. Gaffel Kolsch
3. Jever Kolsch
4. Fruh Kolsch
5. New Glarus Kid Kolsch

Do we detect a pattern here?

I'd like to try more of the domestic versions of these beers, but I'm nearly always disappointed.

I know Fred said Helles, Kölsch, & Pils, but are we limited to these 3 styles?

That and perhaps even Hefeweizen.

Just about the only time I enjoy a (Weihenstephaner) Hefeweizen is after a hard day of yard work.

And believe me, a "hard day of yardwork" up here in the Nicolet can be "pretty darn hard".

Montana brewery with a German owner/brewer. They make pretty killer lagers, their seasonal doppelbock was one of my favorite beers. Their pils was always my summer camping/floating/etc beer. I think they're in cans now too.

Weihenstephaner Helles is just delightful.

I just ordered another 32 cans from Beer Temple, if that's any indication of my level of adoration.

Buzz-sawed through the first 20 cans in nothing flat.  :o

Wait, it's in cans now!?!?!?

Yeap, four-packs of 16.9 ounce cans.

Getcha some.

Shit man, we can hoof it from here.
I know you can walk on water...

Tasty, barely any smoke though if you’re expecting any.

Odious Cellars Area X “Farmhouse Pilsner” x2

Pretty good, light and drinkable. Dosed with Brett but it’s pretty mild.

I would say plenty of smoke for a beer that uses no smoked malts (just the equipment).

Right, it exists due to that process, but is barely perceptible. Just saying don’t go in thinking “smoked Helles” when it’s very mild in the scheme of things.
