Any decent NA beers?
« on: May 03, 2021, 08:20:30 AM »
Seeing a ton of advertising for non-alcoholic beers lately.

30 years ago I occasionally had an O'Douls or a Molson NA, but there seem to be more and more "craft" NA beers on the market now.

Anyone have experience with them?  Any that are actually good?  Is there a significant calorie difference?

Big fan of the Lagunitas hop seltzer.  Doesn't pretend to be beer, but has a great hop flavor, and zero calories.

Think I saw some of that at the store, as well as their IPNA.  Was tempted, but didn't grab any.  May pick up some of each next week.

Agreed, this stuff is good.  But if you really want a beer, this isn’t going to scratch that itch.

The IPNA took a minute to get used to, but I ended up enjoying it.

There are a couple of German ones i've liked in the past: Warsteiner, Clausthaler.

When I first quit drinking, I would sample the NA beers that were available at that point (not very many) and came to the realization I'd rather drink water.

I am curious in trying the Brooklyn NAs like this one
https://brooklynbrewery.com/brooklyn-beers/non-alcoholic/special-effects-hoppy-amber/

There is a new fancy (overpriced) hipster looking brand available here but I cannot remember the name.

Sam Adams Just the Haze is an NA hazy. It was cool to drink but it seems taking the alcohol out also requires making it much less balanced. The alcohol evens out the malts and hops. So, I'd like to see more examples.

Oddly / weirdly that's one of the Weihenstephaner beers I can get in CRIVITZ, WISCONSIN.

Never tried it, never will.

Wondered about those ... get a ton of advertising for them online.  Tempted to try them, but they're a little pricey.  Feels stupid to pay more for fake beer.

Speaking of which, I've also seen Hoplark water advertised ... it's $35 a 12 pack.  FOR WATER.

Untitled Art, that’s the hipster looking shit.

Checked the store today and they had 3 brands of craft NA beer. There is also the imported NA stuff. When my wife was preggo a few years ago, I tried everything available at the time. Much more selection now.

Yes, it's good. Doesn't really help you sleep though.

I tend to use last year's dried hops from the freezer, allowed to sit out for a little while beforehand to air out. A longer steep time increases bitterness, I usually add some honey. Don't use boiling water, just very hot. Today is a perfect cold rainy day to make some. :coffee:

I haven't, but might try it.
I'd avoid the sun tea/cold brew method of leaving it for a long time in the fridge though, it would get way too bitter. Even a couple cones in a cold beer gets too bitter after 20 min. or so.

Picked up some Lagunitas Hop seltzer last week, and really enjoyed it.  Hard for me to justify paying over $1 bottle for it, though.

I also tried their IPNA.  It was OK, but doesn't really taste like beer to me.  It's like a grapefruit/beer soda.  Eventually tried some of it over ice, and actually liked it better that way.  Not sure I would buy more.

Today I picked up Untitled Art NA Juicy IPA.  It was surprisingly good. A little pricey at 11-somehing for a sixer, but I would buy it once in a while.

Drinking "All Out Extra Dark" now. Similarly unimpressed. If you like prunes and molasses, i've got just the beer for you. :bakes:

1/21/2021 on the can.

Pours into a tumbler with a two finger head of creamy mocha foam, dark brown and black in the glass. Some minor spotty lacing to one side of the glass, good head retention. Smells mainly of prune, raisin, and molasses. A tiny bit of roast malt char in there, but it could use a lot more. Raisin and some odd acidity, mild roasty aftertaste, watered down coffee. Minor oxidation present. Watery feel, thin bodied with ample carbonation. More Schwarzbier than Stout/Porter, but even then it's a stretch. Not bad for the NA category, but there's lots of room for improvement here.

I bought a sixer of Erdinger NA this weekend.  While much better than the Labatt, it was still pretty bad.  I think I may give up on finding an enjoyable NA beer, though the Untitled Art was drinkable.

I didn't like the Athletic ones, but it seems like there are more options out there.

I bought a sixer of Erdinger NA this weekend.  While much better than the Labatt, it was still pretty bad.  I think I may give up on finding an enjoyable NA beer, though the Untitled Art was drinkable.

Have you tried any of the new school ones though?

Just the Lagunitas and the Untitled Art.  I'd love to find a drinkable NA lager.

I've heard good things about the Einbecker, i'll try it soon and report back.

Einbecker Brauherren NA

Ample head of creamy foam, pale gold, bright clarity, some lacing around the glass.

Mild herbal noble hop aroma, crackery and grainy.

Taste is very light and mild, soft graininess and lager yeast, faint hint of noble hop grassiness.

Light bodied, decent carb, finishes slightly watery. Mild bitterness, dry finish, clean aftertaste.

Overall this is good for the style, but as far as repeatability it was a one-time novelty for me.

Edit: I found some old notes from years ago, when this was in green bottles. Definitely better than it was then, but still no great shakes.

nice, I was very interested in that beer as well.  If I ever see a single, I will pick it up for sure.

I also tried their IPNA.  It was OK, but doesn't really taste like beer to me.  It's like a grapefruit/beer soda.  Eventually tried some of it over ice, and actually liked it better that way.  Not sure I would buy more.

Will try over ice, still sittin' on that single.

Finally drank it, meh. Even over ice, it was barely drinkable.

Looks like a brown IPA, not the most appetizing. Smells and tastes like caramel malt mixed with a carbonated tea beverage. Slight earthy pine aroma. Taste and feel are just off, carbed but thin and watery. Not a quality beverage.

While it's not beer technically, i'm drinking an Arize kombucha with turmeric & ginger that is excellent. Tastes like a nice Scratch sour ale... almost ;)

Definitely worth a try if you see this stuff. I had sworn off kombucha after trying some straight vinegar from Unity Vibration, but this one gives me hope. Nessala in Madison made a good dry-hopped one too, once upon a time.

Looks like they ship regionally on "barn2door":
