May 2021 BOCK Month
« on: May 01, 2021, 09:19:21 AM »
I jumped the gun a bit - we stopped in at this place last night and they had a Maibock on draft.  Non-traditional (American) hops, but very nice malt.

And even though it was April 30th, since I'm the thread starter:
Give a man a beer, and he'll waste an hour

Teach him to brew, and he'll waste a lifetime

Went to my local beer shop today.  Asked if they had any bock beers.  They had 0.    :missing:

I’ll check out Total Wine next week when I’m over that way.

Half Acre Creak to Rise
Spring Bock 6.8% ABV

Dark amber with sharp clarity, and a large head of billowing foam. Spotty lacing all down the glass. Aroma is subdued but malt forward, grainy and toasty. It has a big toasted bread crust presence, more hops that traditionally expected, and an impossibly smooth feel. There isn't a huge complexity to it, it's simply just satisfying to drink. Enjoying this beer quite a bit. Brewed with floor malted barley, interestingly enough... you don't see that much these days.

Kind of related, but went into a new boutique butcher shop by me today, and they had a baker's rack full of beer next to the register.  It was about 50/50 Founders and German beers.  Bunch of stuff I haven't seen widely around these parts, like Andechs, and Ayinger in varieties that aren't fest.  Thought it was a cool nod.

Damn, $134.99 to ship 15 hot dogs?

Landjaegers! Hang them up for a week or so in a cool dry spot, dried ones are so much better imho it concentrates the flavor.

Genuine Bock Beer
Pipeworks Brewing Company
6.7% ABV

Maybe not the most refreshing choice after walking 3+ miles in 86° heat, but it’s a solid bock. Toasty, nutty, basically an amber ale in lager form.

Anyone else bocking out this weekend besides myself and Heckmanm? :tumbleweed:

Was going to pickup another sixer of Lakefront Maibock today, but it seems to be gone from the shelves now.     Really enjoyed that one.

Grabbed Capital Maibock, instead.  Beautiful golden color.  More substantial mouthfeel than the Lakefront, and a bit sweeter.  Bordering on too sweet for my taste, but balanced by a grainy finish.  Decent beer, but the Lakefront is much better, IMO.

Also popped another Capital Blonde Dopplebock today.  Big fan of this beer.  More balanced and less sweet than the Maibock.  Been knocking down quite a few of these lately.

Maibocks are hoppier, although usually paler than that pic.

You going to Camarillo or Santa Barbara?  I haven't been to either yet but have had the few beers they distribute and they have been great.  I may be due for a trip to SB.

Half Acre is known to deliberately muddle styles too. I don't think they've ever made a fully traditional German style beer, from my dim recollection.

I go to Camarillo.  Its right off the freeway, super easy visit coming north or south.  They have a shop and filling station at the front so you don't need to enter the main area to fill.  And the pizza is great.  I have never ht the SB location

Precovid, they would only fill their printed growlers.  I don't know if they have changed those rules since though

You just need to use the width modifier on the IMG tag.  Keep hitting preview until the size is what you want it to be.  I usually start around 500.

Picked up a bottle each of Korbinian and Vitus today.  No American bocks in sight on the shelves, and a couple other German ones they had, they weren't pricing singles (was hoping to get a mixed sixer).

Passed on the Shiner and Michelob Amber varieties

Aventinus - Weizen Doppelbock

OK, technically not a "bock" since it's an ale, but it's there in the name and the strength.  Aroma is banana bread and toffee. Brightly-clear deep copper color, with a surprisingly loose, fizzy head more like a soda than a beer. Flavor is malty-rich with banana ester from the weizen yeast, finishing on the sweet side, but not cloyingly so. Full-bodied but lightened by fairly high carbonation.

Don't feel bad about your struggles with imgur. My corporate iPhone and computer block imgur, so I can't post any pictures at all, ever.

Bock. Finally getting to my absolute favorite beer style.

Maibock, Doppelbock, Winterbock, Weizenbock, Eisbock, I love them all.

I sent Emerge a picture of a Spaten Optimator I was drinking the other day, when it was 62F up here in NE Wisconsin and 80F+ down there by Emergee.

Imgur tells me "image has been deleted". Maybe I waited too long to post it up?

Favorite bockbeers (in no particular order, really).

Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel

Weihenstephaner Korbinian

Weihenstephaner Vitus

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock

Einbecker Winter Bock

Einbecker Mai-Urbock

Hofbrau Maibock

I could go on and on and on.

I went to total wine today.  Better bock selection for sure, but oddly the majority of them were wiezenbocks, followed by doppelbocks.  I’m mostly avoiding stronger beer these days, so I passed on most of those.

There were exactly 2 bocks less than 7.5% and I grabbed both.  Bingo Helles Bock (local) and a bottle of Schlenkerla Ur-bock. Both of which I’ve had, but am happy to revisit.

Precovid, they would only fill their printed growlers.  I don't know if they have changed those rules since though

I've heard good things about their pizza.  I live in the opposite direction so SB is closer.  Enjoy.

Should we take a cab home, Jesus?
Shit man, we can hoof it from here.
I know you can walk on water...
But can you walk on this much beer?

Weihenstephaner Korbinian tonight.  So good.  Rich, toasty, bready malt, just a hint of chocolate.

Local Place that does a decent amount of lagers.  Mostly good, but they occasionally miss.  This was solid.

Doppelbock
Riggs Beer Company - Urbana, IL

Crimson topaz tone, ample foam, bright clarity. Chocolate covered banana, toasted dark bread crust aromas. Dried fig and clove flavors, big toasted malt flavor, caramelized sugars and melanoidins galore. Big and chewy, bittersweet and finishing. Very good stuff.

Had a Whose Bock? Mai Bock! from Oliver Brewing yesterday with lunch.  It was very nice

I could have sworn I posed this yesterday, I cannot figure out where the post went.

Anyway,

Fabulant Helles Weizenbock.  Not my favorite bock style, but pretty good.  I should pick up an Aventinus.

Schlenkerla Urbock - Man, this was good.  I’ve had it before, and I have some of the other Schlenkerla fairly regularly over the years, but I keep grabbing something other than the Urbock.  This was perfect, just the right level of smoke.

Hofbrau Maibock - well, color me impressed. I've never tried before and I was very satisfied.

It’s a great beer when fresh. Been a long time since I had a fresh one.

Been look for a while to revisit Aventinus Eisbock. Didn't do it for January big beer month or dark lager month but finally did today. Picked up a 2016 vintage (released in 2020) bottle.

I think I'd rather take a Samichlaus at 14% than this at 12% but its a much milder beer.  Though, it seems to lack an flash and is a bit too dull for a 12% eisbock.

Had one this weekend.  I don't know any other Eisbock I've had in the past but I don't think I'm a fan.  12% is pretty high ABV and really influenced the flavor.
