Alcholic Seltzer Thread
« on: March 30, 2021, 01:09:21 AM »
Figured this fad deserves a thread of its own.

Even Coca-Cola (via Molson Coors) is getting in on the trend

Mmmm, Alco seltzer.

My wife drinks them primarily due to the low sugar content - keto helps her with her migraines.

I’d rather just drink beer.  No question these things are crazy popular though.

My wife drink quite a bit Black Cherry White Claw.  That and grocery store white wine are her go-tos.

I have drank my share of Truly.  What ever alcohol they use for these makes my head feel dull though, don't particularly like the buzz
Should we take a cab home, Jesus?
Shit man, we can hoof it from here.

We've gotten the mixed pack from Costco.  I love grapefruit so I tried one.  It's awful.  Like the Cranberry Lambic of the mixed pack.

I wish they would just make them taste like simple flavored sparkling water....with alcohol.   Don’t get cute with the flavor.

Or the artificial sweetness. I don't think I have had Truly but Spiked Seltzer was super sweet.

We have a local place that was making that - just plain shine & soda - but according to my local beer store, they’re killing that flavor.  I don’t get it.

Maybe all the smootie brewers will abandon ship for the seltzer train. All they want to do is dump extracts/candy/fruit/desserts into booze anyway.

Actually kind of curious on that one. I am guessing lactic acid added to it? Citric acid? I imagine it is sour, right?

Here is one that caught my eye.

The wife would love the root beer flavor.

Considering most of these companies are owned by beer concerns, let's call it a draw.

Where is Zima? Where is Smirnoff Ice? Where is Mike's Hard Lemonade? I feel like this is the segment that keeps rotating. Hard seltzer is the new Zima.  I don't worry about losing beer drinkers over the long term (not to hard seltzer, anyway).

hopefully dead and buried

Zima first appeared when i was around 20 and it was noticeable amongst the women, but not men.

now it seems to be acceptable and even favored by a lot more men.

Some people like the taste of television static combined with the game of "don't tell me what fruit this is supposed to be".

Ok, all of you are fucking wrong. Well, to be more precise ignorant as hell. You are entering the seltzer world as if the current state is representative of the recent past. Like a new beer bro that thinks that fruited lacto lactose sours are normal. Well, it isn’t. So:

Seltzer is amazing cause flat beverages taste better with carbonation (e.g., flat beer sucks).
The funky flavors are a fad for the ignorant.
Flat water is for pussies!

The Force is what gives a brewer his power. It's an energy field created by yeast. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It converts polysaccharides to ethyl alcohol.

The annoying thing about the Topo Chico hard seltzer is it has literally nothing about it that makes regular Topo so unique.  No crazy effervescence, no minerality.  Just same old fake fruit flavor as the others in a moderately sparkling beverage.  Can't taste the booze at all though.

We are somewhat vacationing by visiting my in-laws (pool, sun, sitters for child). The wife decided she wants alco seltzer for this trip. So, of course, I need to get all beer geeky on her and pick some stuff out.

Strictly looking for stuff that has no  more than 1g of sugar added per 12oz.  Bought some Wild Bason, Flying Embers, and Sweetwater Hydroponics Seltzer (I guess they are pushing the 420 themes even harder after being bought over by a weed company).

Simply put, all this shit goes down like regular seltzer. It is insane, they distill sugar cane and add a bunch of flavors. Not something I will look for myself but its a great option for those that are calorie-, gluten- and carb-conscientious.

However, I feel bad for the kids. Drinking alcohol needs too come with some effort. Deciding if you prefer guava-jalapeno over very-berry is not same as having to drink shitty Miller Lite in college.

It seems like the health-conscious segment is driving this market somewhat, but not exclusively. Definitely cutting into Mich Ultra, etc. sales, which is a good thing imho. Except now they're quitting production of High Life and Hamms to make more seltzer.

I swear, we are getting so close to this...

How close are we to weed beer though? :coffee:

I had a dream nightmare last night that I walked into a new beer store, and every table had ice and a blender on it. People were pouring kool-aid colored beers into the blenders and splashing them everywhere. I noped right out of there. :backsaway:

Bought the wife a Crook & Marker alcoholic seltzer mixed pack.  This is by far the worst we have tried. It is 80 calories with 4% abv and has stevia added. Everything tastes too sweet and very artificial. The grape and cherry tasted like medicine. The tangerine was also undrinkable.

One the bright side, I think I found a seltzer that I actually truly enjoy. Stillwater made a White and Red seltzer that is 99 calories and 4.5% abv with NO added flavors. Meaning, its light and has fruity flavors but that is strictly from the fermentables. I have actually thoroughly enjoyed it

We went to a local craft brewery because they have a burger restaurant inside that was highly recommended.  My wife ordered two separate flavors of house seltzer, and said they smelled like garbage.  She's very resistant to new stuff, so assumed she was being a baby because it wasn't White Claw, but nope, actually smelled like a dumpster.

I am assuming they used cheap or expired flavors. Maybe weird fermentation stuff?

I don't think it was an infection, just not good.  Shared this story with others locally, and they said they had similar experiences.
