some of you didn't grow up in Wisconsin and that makes me sad

Makes me sad that my kid will grow up here.

but she'll be a professional drinker by the time she's 20!

bittersweet that I won't be around to see it

call me if you need to talk

Cascade just sold to new owners.

Cascade made some great beer, but man was it expensive when it came here in distro.  I don't think I've bought a single bottle since they started selling here.  I feel a little bad, but at 35$ a bottle I don't really.

That said, visiting their barrel house was one of the highlights of my trip to Portland way back when.

Jackie O's had to cancel their Bwizzle Day release, so they are selling online. If you live in OH, VA, DC, or AK you can order online. I'm pretty excited to get my shipment.

One of my good buddies out here works there. Art, the old owner really didn’t treat the business with the attention and passion it deserves. Even before the pandemic occurred I would pop in there to say hi and have a few 2oz pours and the place would be 25 to 30% on a Friday fucking night.

They kept increasing the prices of the food while taking away the sides that used to be included.  They also treat most of their employees like crap.

I think this has been in the works for a while.
i'm not good at putting this stuff in words but i can't see myself with anyone else except maybe urbanhack.

Yeah, it sounds like he was ready to hang it up. Hope the new owners can turn it around.

Argus Brewery I hardly knew you:

https://www.chicagotribune.com/coronavirus/ct-coronavirus-argus-brewery-chicago-closed-20200422-h7x5gjxgrbdhtiwtuuxink4diy-story.html

Sadly, i'm not surprised. They never were able to get their name out there, besides when they opened in 2009 and the market was tiny then, compared to now. Plus their beer was never anything notable.

I'd always heard the tour was fun and they had bocce courts, but it wasn't enough to take the 2 hour trip to get there. RIP Argus :tombstone:

I don't think I ever drank one of their beers.
Somehow i've had 8 over 11 years. They were never very visible, mostly random draft accounts. The last one I had last year, Cygnus-X1 was a nice schwarzbier. Apparently they hired a good brewer in recent years, but it was too late.

Interestingly, they also hired the former owner of Golden Prairie (1990's brewery), where Josh Deth had his first job, and I have a few bricks in the garden from when they tore down the brewery.

I’m surprised they were in business this long. Seemed like no one ever mentioned them and I never heard anything about them. I visited their space in 2013/14, which was decent.

Wait, you've been to Argus? I don't even know anyone from Chicago that's been there! :slowclap:

From the article, it was ran by a billionaire that "wanted something to do" and started a brewery, lol. I'm also surprised that it lasted this long.

I lived in Chicago for a year and tried to visit every place at the time. It was still relatively manageable at that time. Right now I didn’t even have the time or energy to visit everything in my metro area at least once.

I lived at Augusta and Oakley (But I wasn't active on TBS at the time). I hung out with some of the Chicago RBians at the time.

I worked downtown and visited Eataly and the Rock Bottom often. I went back this summer and Eataly wasn't brewing (shame that the system wasn't being used) and the quality of beer at Rock Bottom was much worse.

That was the time I fell in love with Metropolitan, I wish I could have any decent lagers near me.

I decided to google Argus and I may have made a mistake. That's not the building I visited, so I may be thinking of some other place (unless they moved). Now I'm wondering what the heck is stuck in my head. A dark place with a bar and not much space otherwise. Was a brewpub.

Alulu in Pilsen maybe?
That’s cool, kind of near Hack’s old place on Chicago. That was before Forbidden Root opened over there. Did you ever go to Puerto Rico Food & Liquor on Augusta, or the Secret Squirrel bar? Rich’s Deli on Western? I had an apartment near Milwaukee/Division once upon a time, moved around 2004. Used to go to the local dives Inner Town and Club Foot.

Happy Village and Inner Town we’re out spots when craft beer wasn’t  a necessity. I didn’t venture much west of Western.

I did love the neighborhood and if we ended up living in Chicago that’s where I would have wanted to live. Particular closer to Grand as it was a bit more affordable. Home prices have gottten much more expensive since we left.

Though, we lived during one of the winter vortex years and that was scaring.

Yeah the polar vortex was no joke, I think that was the only day my work has ever shut down due to weather.

Damn Brugge is permanently closing :(  I loved that place and location. Sad I won't be able to get back there and have more mussels and frites.  Hopefully they will open up again eventually.

Sad to hear about Slumbrew, although I never seemed to buy much of their beer.  It was OK-not-great, and mostly sold in bombers which seem to have fallen out of fashion.

Agreed.  Have yet to try them but one of my ex coworkers loves their beer.  Sounds like they have a solid plan moving forward, which is great to hear.  Hoping the finances work out.

Not a brewery and not closed (yet), but it sounds like The Old Fashioned in Madison is on the brink.  They have a gofundme page, trying to raise $75K to stay open.

This place is not far from me.  We rarely went because the menu was vegan skewed.  By the time they started introducing more meat, Covid happened.

Dang, I visited in 2009 and it was memorable. On my visit it felt like above average and the so remember pizza was their thing. Had a BA Creme Breule like beer that was special for the time.
