Great Taste 2018 picks and pans
« on: August 13, 2018, 09:04:17 PM »
Any notable favorites or notable bad beers?

Really really loved the Livery Noir Bleu on cask. Just a stunning sour.

I love Todd the Axeman, but if I could get a keg of Todd the Axeman on Mango I would have one in my house all day long.

New Oberpfalz helles.  Marry me.  So good I hit the brewery in Griffith Indiana on the way home. Tiny little place but every lighter I tried there was good.

Parched Eagle casket bitter. That's not a mistype. That beer tasted like death. Like really bad homebrew.

Capitol barrel-aged doppelbock. Doppel butter is closer to it.
My friends say I'm like doing the laundry and forgetting the bleach: I'm not as bright as I could be.

Gator to Pols: I bet you wish the last wedding you went to was the one right before yours....

Tried to avoid the random stuff this year, dumped a number of things but not too many. A local kölsch was probably the most dull thing I can remember.

Here’s some of the best stuff I had;
Brewing Projekt
Eagle Park
Cruz Blanca Agent Piña
Imperial Oak Kaiser’s
Half Acre Bon Hut
Schells Elektrik Empress
FFG Mango Pink Guava Meerts
Transient Canuckley & Bring the Ruckley
Rev Deth By Currants
Forager Exotic Gummies
Kuhnhenn Blueberry Eisbock
Big Grove Whiskey Little Secret boysenberry/coffee

Transient -uckley variants were all really good.

Almost forgot the Fair State brut helles bock.  Almost 10%, drink like 5%, and really super tasty.

that Agent Pina was freaking fantastic

i really like Surly Styx and 2010 Darkness

that Hailstorm variants blend Eileen had was great.. as was the straight Coffee version.

can't remember who made Bomb Pop..   might not even call it beer.. but it tasted good and really broke up the palate fatigue.

I'll second the New Oberpfalz Helles and the Agent Pina!

Also
- Working Draft Vienna
- Next Door Czech Dark
- Tallgrass Key Lime Pie

I had high hopes for the Metropolitan Schwarz & Stormy in the RA tent; OK, but underwhelming.  BUT, I created my own version with Rockhound Schwarzbier and Fall's City Root Suit Riot (ginger/lime). Both good on their own, and great together (and the servers from both booths agreed)

I don't know which of these Chase brought over for me to try, but it was awful.  Really green, unfinished beer.  Even Chase, being a NEIPA-head, thought it was disgusting.

The most memorable for me were

cask Livery Noir Bleu
cask Capital Autumnal Fire
Kuhnhenn Blueberry and Raspberry Eisbock, and I had a blast giving some BA Fourth Dementia to every rookie I could find
Vlad variants and melange
cask Tallgrass Cucumber Mojito
Brugge Madeline

I definitely had more light, easy drinkers than I ever have.  But then I couldn't resist all the Big Uns.

Huh, maybe the DDH DMT or one of the other single hop DMT’s. Had a full pour of the cryo citra at FFG and it was great.

Agent Pina was one of my first beers of the fest, and I made sure to tell everyone I knew to head down to Cruz Blanca for it. Thought it was  :pickle:

Notably absent breweries:
Jolly Pumpkin
515 Brewing (Des Moines)
Flossmoor Station (shurrrg)

Will be at 515 later this week, will ask what happened as they were pouring last year.

I noticed Flossmoor's AWOL booth.  Do they not get invited back next year if they no-show?  Seems like a huge waste of a spot when there are hundreds of breweries waiting to get in.  They had better have a really good excuse.

Overall, how did you guys think Surly did this year? Beer selection was adequate?  Setup, line speed, etc? Presence and games?

Layout was as good as it could get.  Good beer selection, I am in favor of having Darkness on right off the rip but that is me.  Games were awesome.   Overall one of the most fun places to be.  How did you do for raising $ for the food bank?
