Oy ... tough to narrow it down.

What part of town would be best for you?  Do you want a place with food?  Do you want to buy bottles?

I'm flexible on the part of town. We are going hiking then eating somewhere in town before grabbing a few drinks. A good taproom or brewery would be great. A store to get beer to go would also be appreciated. Can they sell on Sunday in WI. We will be trekking back to Chicago afterwards.

If I had to pick just one place for a meal and a large selection of WI beers on tap, it would be The Old Fashioned.  Dexter's Pub is also a good option if you want a burger or sandwich.  If you eat someplace else and want a good bar for drinks, then check out Malt House.

For beer to go, make a stop at Woodman's, Jeny St Market, or any of the Steve's liquor stores.

I'm sure others will chime in with their own favorites ...

easiest combo from bison's suggestion is Old Fashioned & Riley's. they're pretty close.

and, yeah, you can buy on Sunday's in Wisconsin.

Barley Pops Tap & Shop for best selection, Old Fashioned for food & selection. Funk Factory or Working Draft for taprooms.
A lot of places are closed Sundays, or open at 4-5. Malt House and Mason Lounge are closed.

:goodposting: Riley's has really gone downhill, imo.

Sent a PM with a few more options.

How near?  I highly recommend going to New Glarus if you can.

I ended up drinking 9 times my body weight in beer, broke three glasses over my head, 7 over others, ordered up 17 hookers for a little afterparty, held a cabbie hostage while running his cab through the Madison capitol doors, and I grabbed gator's ass.

It's a nice drive on the country roads too, but also depends how much time you have.

Bar/shop combo on the east side, opened a year-ish ago. 40 rotating drafts, modern vibe.

If I personally had to do this, i'd do Working Draft for flights, Weary Traveler for goulash or a bad breath burger, BarleyPop for draft beer/browse, then Jenifer St. to stock up before the ride back (and get some curds). These are all within a mile or so of each other. Your 1-2 is my 3-4 :coffee:

I looked into this and am pushing for it. That's the only place I know in WI and love the stuff I've had.

It's not a big detour, adds half an hour back to Chicago. Pretty scenic drive with rolling hills, old barns, etc.

We went last year during GT weekend. It reminded me a lot of a nice beer bar near my house. I love the combo of taps and bottles to go.

Came here to post that Total Wine has 3 stores in WI now, one in the West Towne Mall on the west side of Madison.
Was news to me...
