Nashville Recommendations

My step-dad's job has him going to Nashville monthly now and I wanted to reach out to see what spots he should hit. Bars, bottle shops, breweries, beers he should be on the lookout for, restaurants, things to do. I may join him out there one weekend at some point. We shall see. Thanks all!

Two smaller breweries to seek out, Bearded Iris and Southern Grist, Bearded Iris is in the northeastern part of the downtown area inside the interstate loop, Southern Grist is in the East Nashville area.  East Nashville is Hipsterville, lots of great food & beer places there.  Yazoo is still pretty solid, look for anything from their "Embrace the Funk" wild fermentation series.  If you've got a little time and a car, drive about 30 minutes south to visit Mantra brewing in Franklin TN... Probably my favorite TN brewery at this point.  Franklin is a pretty cool place to visit, one of the wealthier suburbs.  So the other thing that I'm not that versed in is the whole Hot Chicken thing.  It wasn't really a thing when I lived there 35 years ago, but it is now.  Prince's is the original, but everyone seems to argue over what is best.

I concur with Jedi on the beer places.  I really enjoyed Mantra with Tara, Gilly, and Donny.  When Brac and I went to Bearded Iris we happened into some kind of spoken word open mike night, the beer was good but it was an odd experience.  I've not been to Southern Grist, but I have really enjoyed their beers that I've had.  Craft Brewed is a good bottle shop that serves by the drink if you want a variety of local and regional breweries.  Yazoo is always good and it is only a couple of blocks from Jackalope for a 2 for 1 stop. 

Here is a pretty good list (and a really crappy map) of most of the breweries in town. 

Power just went out in my office, when I have a few more minutes, I'll talk about food.

We don't get out a lot to eat and the kids a not very adventurous eaters so I don't know much about the food scene here.  If you are interested in the hot chicken thing, I can help a little there.  Hattie B's is not the best, but it is good and probably the most convenient with a couple of locations, reasonable eat-in space, and a handful of local beers available.  Party Fowl is located between Yazoo and Jackalope and offers more of a dine in experience with a much more varied menu and a decent take on Nashville Hot Chicken. Outside the hot chicken stuff, i know that there are a bunch of new restaurants, I'm just not that familiar.  If you have a particular interest, I can probably find out.

Let me know if you come in town, I'd like to have a couple of beers with you.

I know next to nothing about Tennessee beer, but Bearded Iris made fantastic beer that was served at Bonnaroo's "brooers" tent last year.   I have a lot of respect for the guy for the following story too:

Sunday night, about 6:45 PM.  The "brooers" tent (the separate tent for craft beer options, there are maybe 30 breweries with 2-3 beers each) is scheduled to close for good at approx 8 PM.  I head in for one more Bearded Iris IPA, but there's no one behind their counter.  A handful of the other breweries have shuttered entirely and gone home or some of their options have kicked and they're down to 1 beer.  There's 1 guy waiting in line in front of me, we're standing there for about 2 minutes and this guy comes hustling back into the tent with a dolly and a keg.  He taps the keg and serves us both the IPA.  I started talking to him....apparently all of the beer is in a refrigerated truck a decent hustle from the brooers tent.  Bonnaroo staff is supposed to deliver the kegs - you're running low on a beer, you call them, they bring you your keg.  Well, he called them for a keg of the IPA around 6:30 and they told him to shut down the IPA and that they wouldn't deliver it this late with the tent scheduled to close in 90 minutes.  He basically gave them a fuck you and went to the truck and got his own keg out.  He was the brewer - I can't remember his name anymore - and was the brewery's only employee working the fest at that point....so when he went to get his own keg, there was no one to man the station.   But Bearded Iris is tiny compared to those other breweries in the tent, and he said he wants to serve his great beer and get some exposure, and the tent isn't closed yet.  It's a meaningless story, but I have a lot of respect for their brewery after that.

Bumping an old-ish thread.  Jaime has a business conference in mid-October (15th-16th) and I'm tagging along.  I'll have time to kill during the day while she's at the conference, so recommendations are welcome. @coldchill - we could meet up for a beer if you're around that weekend.

Unfortunately, our hotel (and the conference) is out by the airport, so I can't just stroll downtown, but we might head in for dinner one or both nights.  Don't have a lot of details on her schedule yet.

Looks like we're closer to the big reservoir than to downtown, so maybe I'll go get some exercise during the day.

Been to Tennfold once, beers were solid, and the pizza looked good, but we had already eaten... its in Donelson, also of interest in Donelson is Homegrown Kitchen & Taproom, and Party Fowl (Nashville Hot Chicken) As for the Yazoo EBF barrel room, yeah I don't think it has a tap room, I know the guy who runs it, I'll ask to be sure.  I've heard good things about Various Artists, but I've not been.  Not much public transit in Nashville, but there is a commuter train downtown from Donelson (town where Tennfold is) that runs twice early in the morning and twice in the afternoon.  Downtown puts you in range of most everything.  If you were going to use an extended Uber to get somewhere else, I would recommend all the way to the west Nashville area called "The Nations". there are locations for both Bearded Iris and Southern Grist there, and there is a Hattie B's Hot Chicken location.  There is also a decent distillery, Pennington, and a few smaller breweries.

There's dinner and dancing there on Friday night starting at 7, so I'll be free from maybe 2 to around 5:30ish.  Tennfold seems like an easy jaunt from there, so I'll probably check them out Friday afternoon.

Saturday I have the whole day and if the weather's good I'd like to drive out to Priest reservoir and see if I can find any hiking trails in the parks.  If the weather sucks, IDK. The resort has free shuttles to a few places including downtown.

There's nothing on the official conference schedule after 5PM on Saturday but I thought there was talk about going downtown on Saturday night (maybe just the resort shuttles). If so, we'll probably do that since neither of us has really been downtown.

Sunday we'll grab a late breakfast somewhere and head home.

Also, Radnor Lake was a nice hike.  I stuck to the "lake" trails and skipped the steep ones 'cuz I'm old and out of shape. Had a great day for it - low-mid 60's and sunny (but the trails go through the woods so are mostly shaded).

But holy hell is that place busy on a Saturday.  There was a line of cars about 10 deep at the entrance waiting for parking spots to open up as people finished their hikes/walks and left.

yeah, its in the hotty totty part of town, so a lot of those cars were probably beamers and mercedes… interesting thing about the lake is that is was created as a water supply for the nearby Radner railyard, originally the L&N railroad, now CSX I think.

Just cruise the Honky Tonk Highway on Broadway until you hear music you like. About a dozen live music bars within a few blocks, probably mostly country though. Here's a list of independent venues that will have a variety of music. Look at their calendars and find a good show.

DrkMttr i've heard of, looks like King Hannah is playing sat, Cloakroom on sun, and Immortal Bird on mon.

Coldchill will know the good spots, always best to ask a local.

Country ham sliders at Husk

Had to do a dinner at Husk as thats the spot she wanted to try, and I certainly wasn't opposed. Good thing because otherwise I would've missed out on an excellent meal and maybe my two favorite bites of this trip, along with the hot chicken from 400 Degrees anyway. The patio was an option and it was beautiful outside so we rolled with that. The cocktails here were almost as good as the food, as was the service. I'd heard mixed reviews before going in, but we were off to a good start.

I don't have to say anything about the sliders featuring Cheerwine Glazed Belly Ham, Pickled Onion, Cucumber, Smoked Duke's Mayo, and a House Fried Rind on a Homemade Parker House Roll except that you cant get much more Southern than that.

400° is the hot chicken that I brought to Howard's.  IMO, the best there is. Comparable to the original Prince's (RIP).  Hattie B's is the tourist destination, passable but as authentic as some others (Joella's is truer to Nashville Hot Chicken than Hattie B's)

Best BBQ IMO - Peg Leg Porker, Martins, Edleys...in no particular order.

I avoid Lower Broadway and the Honkey Tonks unless I am going to an event at the arena or the Ryman so I can't really comment on nightly music scene.  I do go to the Basement East and Marathon Music Works on occasion. 

Anyway..too late , I know.  Maybe the suggestions will help someone else in the future.

Made a trip to Huntsville to go to the NASA museum.  My wife had never seen a rocket before so she was super excited. The biggest negative is a lot of the displays did not work and there was a lot of construction going on so many exhibits were off limits. Some of the simulators would have been cool but there was no way to reset.  You had to wait to fail and that took too long. On one the throttle and joystick were so sensitive I don't see how anyone could complete the tasks. Maybe I am just old.

But that rocket WAS incredible.  Definitely get a better idea of its size when arranged horizontally.

Well shit man, coulda met for a beer or something... I actually enjoy looking at some of the older rockets.  What is even more amazing to me is the Redstone rocket, which is kinda small, but its what Alan Shephard sat at the top of for the first ride... balls of steel for sure.  The vertical Saturn V is purely replica, to scale, but it is all steel inside to make it as wind proof as possible.  The horizontal Saturn V in the Davidson Center is an actual Saturn V that would have flown if the program had continued.  It actually sat outside exposed to the elements for 40 years or so, the Smithsonian threatened to take it away if it wasn't put in a building.  You might have missed it, but two of the space monkeys are buried there, Straight to Ale Brewing's Monkeynaut is named for Ms Baker, she lived there on display in a cage from surviving her flight until she died.

That's awesome/crazy/sad. I guess no different than being in a zoo, but you'd think a space monkey would get to live out their days in luxury.

I saw the burial plots and took pics!  We were not in Huntsville very long.  Had to return the rental car that night and fly out from Nashville so a long drive. The downtown area looks quite charming.  Wish I had more time.
