LONDON —Beer and soft drink maker Anheuser-Busch InBev has confirmed it has made a takeover approach to rival SABMiller plc.

In announcements Wednesday, the companies say no specific offer has been made.

The statement said: "AB InBev's intention is to work with SABMiller's Board toward a recommended transaction. There can be no certainty that this approach will result in an offer or agreement, or as to the terms of any such agreement."

SABMiller said it "would review and respond as appropriate to any proposal which might be made."

Anheuser-Busch InBev jumped 7 percent after the company made a takeover approach to SABMiller, the owner of Miller and Peroni. Shares of SAB Miller rocketed up 22 percent on the news.

That's what I was thinking. Antitrust lawyers must be sharpening their pencils.

U.S. clears way for $101 billion AB InBev-SABMiller mega-beer merger

heuser-Busch InBev won U.S. antitrust approval for its takeover of SABMiller after the maker of Budweiser agreed to give up ownership of the Miller brand and open the door to greater competition from craft beers.

"AB InBev will sell SABMiller's stake in MillerCoors, separating the two brands, and refrain from practices that restrict distribution of smaller rival brews, thus protecting the ability of craft and import beers to compete, the Justice Department said in a statement Wednesday. The settlement will prevent any increase in concentration in the U.S. beer industry, according to the statement."

You want us to not take ownership of the single brand that is an albatross around the neck of future growth of SABMiller?  Well, okay...I guess...if we have to.
