Fred in California - Not again?
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:13:19 AM »
Going to be flying into SoCal for a week.

I'll be making a work trip to the Escondido and Huntington Beach (and possibly another location in CA) sometime during the next few weeks.

As always, I'd love to get together with anyone who's around.   I'll post more as I finalize my travel schedule.

Santa Maria office is moving, and Saturday and Sunday have been described as "essentially vacation days".

Just found out that Santa Maria and San Francisco may also be in the works for this trip.  Looks like it's going to be a long week.

Not an itinerary, but here's the cities where I have to go:

San Francisco
Santa Maria
Huntington Beach
Escondido

This is going to be a crazy week of bouncing around, but I've done a trip like this once before.  I'm definitely stretching it into at least one week and one weekend.  Maybe one week and two weekends, depending on the amount of work that needs to be done in each office.

The trick is not scheduling it in such a way that I'm killing myself and just trying to catch flights.  And I can relax on a couple evenings with you assholes.

I'm actually going to be out as well for another Bruery run.  I get in the night of March 11, will likely be around until Mar 14.  Not sure what your dates are, but if they happen to be then, would love to hang out.

Santa Maria.  Interesting destination.  What is there that you need to visit?
Should we take a cab home, Jesus?
Shit man, we can hoof it from here.
I know you can walk on water...
But can you walk on this much beer?

Both Parabola and the new Firestone sour, Feral One are releasing the Saturday before I arrive.  I plan to call the Barrel Works in Buellton, and if any is still around I'll make the drive.  Anyone want to tag along?

Let me know when you are in Santa Maria.  That's close to me.  I'm hitting up a small brewpub on the 2nd (bday) and grabbing some sour and Feral one the 8th or 9th.  I could also try to entice Bridget and Reggie to come out.

I'll be out there in April as well with some old TBS'ers, KPruim and Dr. Rockzo.  We are staying in San Diego for a night after Coachella (4/14) then heading up the coast to camp til Santa Rosa that Saturday night.

sf notes...
Lots of new places everywhere, and cali's no exception...

mikkeller bar - bring your wallet.
but know you'll want to drink a lot of beers, because their taplist was really diverse and for beer week it changes by mid day. Loons there were 60 bucks a bottle, but they had 5 to choose from. The art on the wall is interesting and eye catching... and the taps are very cool. they use those adjustable valve taps with the smaller spigots for better flow control, less foam, less waste. Drank loverbeer beers here, drank commons beers, drank laffler beers, drank many beers.... felt poorer, but is the way of the privelage of craft beer.

woodfour brewing - santa rosa area.
really cool spot... out the way... maybe 5 miles from russian river. and during beer week...
russian river is impossible to get into...
i came to drink, not wait in lines taking a page from our own wimperpoo.

woodfour's space is nice and open, small kitchen that does a small menu in the afternoon, closes for an hour, and then a larger more lavish dinner menu... local sourced all that stuff... but you get that from all the shops around woodfour... the berliner was OUTSTANDING... lemony citrusy acidly delishous... the more subtle sour farmhouse was... more subtle... not as harsh on the bacterias but providing a punch in the mouth sour that didn't disappoint. Went thru the other beers too... all clean, nothing lowbrow, tho styles were explained as simple by doing bartenders. Good bartenders and good beer and good food and no lines... all day.

Whole foods santa rosa area...
drank 3 beers, RRx2 and another RR. then my stomach felt like it would fall out... so i bought some tums told it to stfu... and went on drinking. Don't discount the power of the west coast whole foods.

Sour barrel - berkeley AND Sierra nevada taproom - berkeley.
two very distinct places, very different vibes...
i really liked the feel at the sierra nevada taproom. it's very sierra nevada... classy but not snobby, clean and as you'd expect professional... they had a lot of fun test beers in bottle and on tap... things you don't see. things you can enjoy... sour quad with raspberries... nitro stouts... good ass beers... great store, buncha little stuffs... they had knitted bottle coozies... dorky, yes... but equally awesome.

Sour barrel... bruery brewery turnt renegade... runnin shit up in berkeley... only open a few days a week... get up in there.
the beers there for first time sours, were awesome... but knowing that you can't keep a good sourmaker down... they're not as acedic as bruery beers... little less, much easier drinking but great sour character none the less... worth your time, but plan on this... it's not open much and short ass hours, so get in and get drinkin... figure when i go back next year, it'll be assclown central three floyds line kinda shit.

Cellar maker... Fuck you, best cbu units beer i had on the trip.. what the fuck is a cbu... citrus bitterness units... duh.
Ruity pebbles (say it slow and think breakfast cereal..) a collab with berryessa brewing (someone else you should know...) was one of the most refreshing beers i've had in a while... specially when you're the old man in the beer game... now i'm not the beer hunter but i've had a few with a few after a few... and it's hard to be surprised by innovation... this did that.

Oh and... i walk into their pub... a block down from city beer store... and they had a ipa on that had finished processing 2 hours before i got there... poured like a milkshake... drank so good i had many... They had some berliners there which were interesting, not as good as woodfour to beat a dead horse, but good.

now all these places were great... had great conversations at all... really great experiences, chatted people up, drank down, bought beers at the bar... lifes good.
and then there's Sante Adarius rustic ales...

they had 3 ipa's on... all solid...
they had a porter. vanilla/coffee porter and stout on... all solid
and they had saison in bottle... super solid...
Usually one of them fail in cali... Not here.
drank here for 3 hour session wed, and 4 hour session thursday, had a great time.

rhyder74 on ps4.

If you have time in SD, I really liked Societe.  Toronado was pretty good and chill in the afternoon too.  Hamilton's is always one of my favorites.

Geoi took me to Hamilton's. Great place. I'll leave it up to the locals to decide where I/we should go. :)

well shucks, I pretty much hit the road eastward on the15th.  I could potentially leave via San Diego, but I would still be on the road before you got in.

I would suggest for the 16th, as well as all the bars and such in the city, visit the newer Stone location at Liberty Station.  I think I actually liked it there, my opinion regarding the Escondido location is well documented around here (hate it)

Can anyone give me a recommendation for where in San Diego to stay?   i.e., what part of the city?
I'd like to be somewhat nearby where I'll be drinking.

Can anyone give me a recommendation for where in San Diego to stay?   i.e., what part of the city?
I'd like to be somewhat nearby where I'll be drinking.
Do you want a place near Stone or where you and I will be drinking?

ETA: Stone is in Escondido.

Plan is to stay in San Diego, then drive to Escondido on Monday morning.

Stay at the OB Hotel in Ocean Beach. Tons of great beer spots, food, and spittin' distance from the beach.

I'll be out there in April as well with some old TBS'ers, KPruim and Dr. Rockzo.  We are staying in San Diego for a night after Coachella (4/14) then heading up the coast to camp til Santa Rosa that Saturday night.

I'm booked at the Hilton Gas Lamp, but I may change my hotel for Sunday night to be closer to Escondido.  Unless there's a compelling reason to stay downtown again.

Decided to piggyback on this thread since I knew you guys in SD would be watching it....

My friend is headed to SD for work this week and will have some checked baggage space.  What local stuff should I have him pick up to bring back that is awesome.  Bonus points if it has a small distribution footprint.

Ideally not sours or anything with Belgian yeast since he seems to have an allergic reaction to those.  Barleywines (especially English ones) and IPAs are his favorite styles.

ETA:   He also really wants to get a Pliny on tap.  I assumed the most likely spot was Toronado, but I wonder if it even stays on there.

Alpine IPAs are the best of the best. He would have to drive out there though, or get lucky and find some at G's shop.

Other small distro stuff. hmmm…

The Pizza Port cans are new and awesome. Highly recommend Swami and Ponto. I've never liked their Chronic. Modern Times stuff is good too. Those are also cans, so easier to pack as well. Neither of those leave SoCal at the moment.

Pliny is always on tap somewhere around here. Where, is hit and miss. Is your buddy on untappd? That is a great way to find a beer near you. What part of town is he staying in?

I told him already if it were me I would go to Alpine, Pliny be damned.  :)

I also told him about Pizza Port locations, but I did not even think about the cans that were mentioned in the trade thread recently.  I like the easier packing due to that too.

He is not on untapped, and I will have to ask him where he is staying.

Thanks for the answers so far

Hamilton's had Pliny on tap Wednesday night, but there were so many better DIPAs and IPAs, what a shame if people get stuck on Pliny.  Alpine pretty much got wiped out last weekend, they had an Expo release, so many were there and they sold out of a lot of stuff, follow their Facebook for the most up to date listing of what they have… it didn't look worth going this week so I didn't.  Parabola should be hitting sometime next week.

Alpine is always a wishlist stop for me, but whenever I've been in the vicinity it's a Monday post-Coachella.  I'm not sure even 11AM on Tuesday this time around will fly as Rockzo's main squeeze has a LAX flight at 2.  Bummer, again.

But if I am really lucky, The King has some in stock when we stop by
