Everywhere & In-Between: The **Official** Emerge Tumblr
« on: November 15, 2013, 10:53:35 PM »

So this is my random tumblr, it's focused on Belgian cafe vibes and old breweriana. Messed around with the HTML a little bit, but it's not real forgiving. If there's anything that catches the eye you want to discuss, please do :coffee:

Latest post is about visiting Spuyten Duyvil, connecting that experience with aesthetics of old Belgian cafés.

Old post about Belgian volkscafes:

If I ever ran a place it would be something along those lines, real laid back with a cozy vibe

Whenever I finally make it to Belgium, i'll be visiting a bunch of these little cafes, so this is sort of a fun way to make a list of them.

I want to go there so bad.  How fun would it be to go with another TBSer or two?

Great pics of Spuyten Duyvil. I love that place.
Brings back memories of when the crusher of stone and I visited Brooklyn years ago.
Copious amounts of Cantillon was consumed.

Yeah, it's been a long time since you could buy a glass of Cantillon regularly in a bar, let alone when it was $5 or under.

I somewhat dimly recall having a fairly large amount of  :$: left in my wallet the following day.

I'm not sure who was buying me glass after glass of Cantillon Gueuze, but I only recall paying for two ($7.00 / glass, I think?) and I must have drank ten.

That beer.....was absolutely delicious.

But the next morning, the FARTS.......JFC THE FARTS. I think I blew out a second asshole.

Great time in Brooklyn with Stu.

Is anybody serious about this?  If so, would we line up with the Toer de Gueuze, or go our own way?

Absolutely would do the Toer de Gueuze in 2015, but would take little side trips out to the country also.
Haven't done any planning for this yet, but i'd think a year and a half would be enough time to save up and nail down a long list of must-sees.

My wife's first wife (long story) lives in Rotterdam and we usually fly into Belgium cause it's closer to her place.  I'm sure she would be happy to have a bunch of American's crash at her place.

Sorry for trashing the E's blog here is the story:

So my wife went to a Podunk Midwest High School and there was an exchange student born Spanish but grew up in Holland  (we will call her Dutch Chica) her Senior year. They became good friends and at that time Dutch Chica like boys for the most part.  They would both tell there parents they were going skiing for the weekend and then take off to New York or Chicago to run around and sneak into clubs.  My wife went to College in the states and some summers they would run around Europe or the States for a few weeks.  Once in college, Dutch Chica was here and they were late getting her to the airport (they would drive from Indiana to New Your to get plane home to Brussels )   Dutch Chica still had her U.S. drivers licenses so she drove as fast as possible.  She managed to get a ticket in Indiana,  Tracked by airplane and 2nd ticket in Ohio, one in Pennsylvania and then another in New York, so now she uses her Passport only to drive.  There was a rumor that there was  a warrant out for her but idk?

So summer of '99 Dutch Chica had 3 months of vacation and wanted to tour the U.S. out west and southwest.  So my wife was still in school with the summer off, so they headed out west.  Thru Colorado to California, down through the Southwest and Texas, Nola then back home.  They would sleep in the car or on the beach, living on cigarettes and diet coke.   Well they didn't have much money and the stayed in Vegas for two days.  Well there are only 2 things to do in Vegas, gamble or get married.   They couldn't afford to gamble so they got married by Elvis and one of the cheesy little chapels.

I heard the story from her roommate who was in one of my classes before I ever my wife or Dutch Chica, but at our wedding I still introduced her to everyone as my wife's first wife.

I did 1 tour of Europa with them from Holland to Southern Coast of Spain and 16 hours in Morocco but kids but an end to that. So now when she comes to visit I send her to good beer stores and have her ask the owner for some good beers, except no westy.  Looking to go visit most likely summer of '15.

I never made it to those parties, but the pictures still live on someone's hard drive.  They, with a larger group of dutch friends would have 30hr. parties with the help of GHP and X, and they were a bit like Alice-in-wonderland meets Hieronymus Bosch with out the clothing.

So anywayyyyys....

I've also come across some cool spots in northern France (still in the Flanders region). Thiriez being #1, and there are a few others covered in this article by Joe Stange that appeared in Draft last summer. 'T Kasteelhof looks pretty wacky, like a slightly eccentric grandmother's farmhouse.

Au Joyeaux Retour Des Pecheurs in Zuydcoote, FR

LambicLand was probably the key inspiration for all this, and digging the interiors from photos online. For awhile I wanted to deck out my basement like one of these little cafes, but realized I don't really hang out down there anyway.
