how cold does it have to get before it kills off the plant in the winter?

our temps in NE Wis haven't been able to kill of ours. this year was mild, but we've had some cold ones since the hops went in. i'd say you should be good down into the negative teens (fahrenheit) for sure (can't remember how that translates to centigrade)  we don't mulch or cover ours, so doing that would add to its cold-hardiness.

second main entry down on the page talks of overwintering. they say any sub-zero temps/hard ground freezes can kill them. we know this to be untrue, at least with our beast.

just curious, but of the rhizomes Severstad sent out in the last couple of years, how many are coming up?

Got 2-cascade and 2-willamette rhizomes that I'm going to start in a container and transplant once I get the trellis finished.

Started them in containers on 4/2.  One willamette has popped through.  The trellis is, for the most part, complete, but I want to paint it before I put it.  I went with this concept:


Although I will be running twine to the ground on either side of the vertical.

I'm going to move those bricks over and add more dirt.  I'm also going to string down some twine from the trellis and fasten it to the bottom of the poles.

I gave furley bottles of 4 year old DIPAs over the weekend.  He was excited.

That is actually a 3rd year plant that was recently relocated to my house.  As I understand it, it was 14' tall last year.  I am out of my league

Jaysus, the rhizome came up. that's all that really matters in our experience. sure, it was 3 yrs old before, but it was transplanted. and it came up. i'd say you are set, and don't hope for that little shepherd's crook to be enough for the thing next year, if not this.

you might want to think about relocating that hosta, depending on how far behind the hops are (or aren't). i'd say peony, too, but they take forever to get established, and i'm not sure how they are with transplanting. the hosta would be fine if you moved it, though.

If they get choked out/overrun, it won't happen this year.  The hosta and peony were here when we moved in, and we've completely ignored the beds on that side of the house.  They're not a great location for sun, but my wife already claimed all of those spots for the "important" plants. 

I'll probably dig the hosta and peony up in the fall and either transplant them or give them away.  They both seem pretty healthy, so there's no sense in wasting them.
