Trying to think of somewhere in the vicinity of Madison that could be included during Great Taste weekend. Any suggestions?

Would Lone Girl and Octopi in Waunakee be worth a trip? Seems close enough to Madison.

Update: Tried a couple of their beers at a local fest. Not much to write home about. Guy was super salty about not getting into the Taste.

I think it was a week or two before the Taste, and I asked if they'd be there. He was sure there was an MHTG vendetta to exclude them, but I mentioned the waiting list and new brewery lottery. Didn't seem to faze him.

Lone girl is meh at best and way overpriced. They happen to be in a wealthy Madison suburb that was dying to get a brewery. The space is nice but I have now been a couple of times and have little reason as a local to go back...

I swear they closed down, but maybe i'm thinking of the ski-lodge pseudo-brewpub that was out by Quivey's Grove in Madison.
They made the worst beer I had at GTMW a few years ago. :bag:

Yep, I was thinking about a place in Madison that looks identical. Gray's Brewing, that was it.

Their website is awful.  Found this nugget on their menu ...

"Our pizza is from Pearl’s Pizza in Slinger and is delivered fresh and frozen when it arrives here."

I will agree with you there. Only noticed the proximity to Delafield on Google maps.

Well, if you're up for a drive, Second Salem in Whitewater is very good, and there's plenty of options in MKE.

Sounds like Driftless Brewing finally opened their taproom in Soldiers Grove, south of Viroqua. Only open Fri-Sat.
That area is really nice to drive through.

Not WI, but out that way, Deb's Brewtopia in Elkader IA also opened a taproom recently. Schera's hosts Zwanze day, and has some Cantillon on tap currently.

didn't make it to Sheboygan. went to Manitowoc instead.

stopped in at Petskull (Pet Skull?). it's small. sort of Ahnapee sized. only tried the IPA and it was very....watery. not really any flavor to note. place was pretty busy, seems popular.

will stop in again next time we're in the area to give it a fair shot.

that's even worse

it's pretty grim, all things considered. a couple nice neighborhoods with Frank Lloyd Wright-like homes and then a lot of empty store fronts, run down houses & just nothing exciting.

there was a music festival in a downtown park. Booker T (of Booker T and the M.G.'s) was to be playing. we rolled by to check it out. there were maybe ...... 20 people there mid-afternoon and like 3 tents. brutal.

for any of you FLW fans

Stumbled upon a new one. Basically looks like a guy named Mel bought a roadside dive bar in Richland center, and is homebrewing on a 1 BBL system. About an hour from the Dells, not sure if I want to make the trek for a brown, amber, and stout. Nice looking ribeye sandwich though...

Hillsboro Brewing Co. in Hillsboro is opening the taproom of their new production brewery tomorrow.
Looks like they're canning & distributing now too.

Some Nerve Brewing Company
Manitowish Waters, WI

New brewery from the owner of Ruef's Meat Market in New Glarus. I guess he sold that place to finance the brewery. Always loved Ruef's.

Kinda far... although Even Furthur is in Highbridge in August. Same week as the Taste though, boo.

There needs to be a new event using the Taste model for all these new breweries they won't let in.

maybe the MHTG people could set these "just missed the cut" breweries with events around town, too?

Eh, there are too many GTMW-eve events already. I think they'd just get lost in the mix.

Some breweries i've stopped at before/after the Taste, literally less than 1-2 hours from Madison, have never heard of it. Maybe it's dealing the waitstaff and not the brewers, but some are certainly not ambitious enough to even apply for the Taste. Or they're on a 1-2BBL system and can't make the min. amount of beer.

Get the breweries that miss out with the people who miss out on tickets and hold the B Team fest across the lake.
