http://wbay.com/2016/01/25/ephraim-referendum-would-end-dry-tradition/

EPHRAIM, Wis. (AP) — Residents of a Door County village where alcohol sales have been prohibited since it was founded in 1853 will have a chance to change that tradition in April.

Two referendum questions will be on the spring ballot in Ephraim asking its 300 residents whether beer sales should be allowed and whether it’s OK to sell wine in restaurants.

Ephraim businessman Hugh Mulliken started a petition drive to put the questions to voters. Mulliken tells the Journal Sentinel that restaurants in the village are at a disadvantage because they can’t serve beer or wine with dinner. But others like keeping the tradition of Ephraim as a dry village. Referendums on ending the prohibition failed twice before — in 1932 and in 1992.

The tourist town is believed to be the only alcohol-free community left in Wisconsin.

This is a real thing in Wisconsin???

But honestly I don't have an ounce of pity for this guy or other places there. Nobody forced them to open a restaurant in a dry city. Don't cry to the Village board to change because business sucks when you knew what the hell you were getting involved in with regulations. I highly doubt he opened his doors and somebody had to tell him oh by the way, we're dry.

However if that was the case...

Digging this Saison from Door Co. Brewing, La Printemps.
Apricot tartness and earthy dry yeast. Light and clean.
It's apparently a tribute to the Belgian community on the lower peninsula.

got to Bier Zot about 4:30. it's a small place. maybe room for 15-18 inside with a couple small tables for 2.. tables for another 12 outside. we managed to time it right so that we got an outdoor table.

nice beer menu. especially for Door County. better than any taplist i've seen in GB, no doubt.

they bill it as a European style cafe, which means mostly appetizers, small plates and salads. they have a nightly special outside the regular menu. on Saturday that was a lamb & chorizo burger. tasty except for the pea shoots which were like chewing on chicken wire for some reason.

Surly tap takeover started at 5. Darkness pint for $7.50. yes, please. had Xtra Citra, Overrated and Pentagram as well. met a guy who said he was the Wisconsin rep for Surly, lives in Madison. nice guy.

of the people that were there, i'd say... 5-6 of us were there for Surly. wonder how the rest of the night went.

would definitely go there again for beer. probably eat at Wild Tomato next door first, though.

Damn, that's a steal. Reminds me of the time years ago I got wasted on $6 pints of Darkness and decided to walk 3 miles home.

Glad to hear good things about Bier Zot, I just mentioned it to someone heading up there today.

yeah, unfortunately we only had time for a pint with dinner or things would have got ugly.

hope your friend stopped at the Main Street Market in Egg Harbor. they have really improved their selection. used to be only beer on shelves. nothing really out of the ordinary.. long time ago i found Devil Dancer there when it was nowhere else so i always check back but never see anything interesting.

now they've dedicated a few doors of cooler space to beer.  had Blakkr 4-packs, 5L's of Oberon, some juicy 4 packs of Two Hearted, 12 packs of Moon Man cans.

http://wbay.com/2016/06/30/ephraims-dry-spell-ends-at-1201-a-m/

EPHRAIM, Wis. (WBAY) – People in Ephraim can set down their water and enjoy a beer or wine on Friday.

Liquor licenses officially become legal at 12:01 a.m.

The Door County village of about 300 has been dry since Norwegian Moravians founded it in 1853.

Voters approved allowing the sale of beer and wine in a referendum in April. Supporters wanted alcohol sales to bring more tourists to local businesses.

Chef’s Hat plans to serve drinks at 12:01 a.m. — but only until 12:02 a.m., at which time they plan to go to bed.

Several restaurants and hotels will begin serving alcohol Friday… at a more reasonable time.

http://www.wbay.com/content/news/Crews-battle-fire-at-Shipwrecked-Brew-Pub-in-Door-County--441148493.html

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) At least 20 fire engines responded to a fire at a restaurant and brewery in Door County late Sunday morning.

Fire crews have been on scene at the Shipwrecked Brew Pub in Egg Harbor since about 11 a.m. Sunday and continue to put out the fire.

The General Manager of Shipwrecked, John Smith, told Action 2 News that the fire started around 11 a.m., when the restaurant opened, on the second floor.

Smith says the fire started after an air conditioner caught fire. He also believes the building is a total loss.

No injuries have been reported and Smith says everyone got out of the building safely.

Pictures on social media show heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor.

The American Red Cross is on scene with food and water to help assist firefighters. The Main Street Market helped supply some of the food.

Crews have shut off the power within a block radius of the fire.

Fire departments responding include; Egg Harbor, City and Town of Sturgeon Bay, Ephraim, Southern Door County, Brussels, and Jacksonport.

The Shipwrecked Brew Pub is also a brewery and popular tourist destination in Door County.

The pub, originally built in 1882, took on a number of names over the years before the current owners purchased the building in 1997 and reopened it as the Shipwrecked.

http://fox11online.com/news/local/shipwrecked-brew-pub-torn-down-prepares-to-rebuild

EGG HARBOR (WLUK) -- In August, the Shipwrecked Brew Pub in Egg Habor went up in flames.

Fast forward to Wednesday, crews knocked down what was left of the building.

Dick Vintigers, who is from Iowa, usually stops at the restaurant when in Door County.

But Wednesday, he was surprised at what he saw, "We were coming down 42, and said what's going on here, they're tearing up this place?"
Bystanders also stopped to take a photo as the building was reduced to rubble.

"Very first thing this morning, we started the tear down, and got some of the equipment out," said Beth Levendusky, Marketing Director for Shipwrecked.

She says it hasn't been an easy process, "The first floor which was untouched by the fire, that has to be the most difficult to tear down."
Levendusky says the just around 20,000 square-foot building will take a day to tear down.

She says once it is complete, they're jumping right into rebuilding, "The plan, the hope is, to be open by summer 2018."

Levendusky says with the old building going away, they're also losing a piece of history.

She explained Shipwrecked was believed to have been a hide out for notorious gangster, Al Capone, "The door, it's rumored to be one of Al Capone's tunnels, for rum running basically."

But she says, some things won't change, "We believe the ghosts are going to be back."

As for Vintigers, he says he'll be back next summer, in hopes that the renovations are complete, "We enjoyed it."

The cost to rebuild is expected to be around $1 million.

edit: Anybody been to Bier Zot in Sister Bay?
I've seen some oddly middling reviews but heard good things.

double edit: I see Furley has

yup
i liked it. of course, i went for a Surly event and drank darkness.

went in semi-blind. in that i was expecting it to have more food options.. but it's really a one-dish-a-day place with beer. still nice. especially for where it's at.

worth a stop for sure, i'd say, if you're up that far.

Just saw the latest Wisconsin Foodie, they featured Discourse in Sister Bay and Trixie’s in Ephraim. Both places looked incredible.

They both seemed to be relatively new, I think the Discourse place is run by the former beer guy at Bier Zot from what i’ve read. He seems to be applying creative mixology to coffee and tea, I wonder if they’ll ever expand to include a bar.

Just booked a cheap last-minute cottage near Fish Creek :whew:

I was told to check in here:

That looks about right.

So I don't think I ever updated this, better late than never. :bag:

I just looked up the place we stayed and it was sold to the owners of Julie's in Fish Creek last year. Still open.
When we went, an elderly widow was still running it. She was super nice, we checked-in and paid for the place at her home, which doubled as her beauty shop. Wish her well in retirement.

The cabin we stayed at was super cheap but also pretty odd in a good way. It felt like a lived in vacation cabin from the 60's-70's. The living room had old lamps, endtables, an old couch and coffee table. The bed had an old lace bedspread and oil lamp next to it. The kitchen had a drawer full of random kitchen gadgets, also mismatched tableware and old aluminum cups. There were ground level windows in every room, my wife was afraid someone would break in and axe us Friday the 13th style. It felt very "Twin Peaks", an eerie vibe where time stood still.

It looks like the cabins have been updated recently though. Prices have definitely gone up, cottages are now $100, used to be $75 but I swear it was only $50 or so.

I doubt they are still as quaint, but maybe. I still have some photos of the old place I backed up that i'll try to dig up...

Seems like Hacienda is getting a fair amount of buzz, I really like the stuff they had at Far & Away, and what Bob shared at the TBS cornhole before the GT last year.

what's this then?

Bailey's Harbor?

as soon as the oxen are properly fed and my trusty sled dog is hale enough for the journey north, i'll have to mush up there and check it out.

So this is the parent company of Door County Brewing?  Haven't seen or heard about anything labeled as "Hacienda" here.

An offshoot of Door County Brewing making the hype bro styles is the way I understand it while Door County makes the more traditional stuff.

It’s the on-site 15BBL brewery at the taproom they opened last year. Door Co. stuff gets contracted at Octopi for wide distro. Sounds like they are looking to open a 2nd taproom in Milwaukee already. :$:

Yep.
I recommend the Hacienda brews. Really tasty versions of some contemporary styles. Let Door County do the more traditional stuff.

http://fox11online.com/news/local/shipwrecked-brew-pub-torn-down-prepares-to-rebuild

Stopped in for a beer at the new Shipwrecked today.  Had a porter, which used to be the best of their regular lineup.  It was awful.  Also sampled a milk stout.  Meh.

The new space is big, open, modern(ish), bright.  Most of the restaurant seating is upstairs now.

Two really odd things about the place: The bar is on the main floor, but the restrooms are upstairs.  Also, they have tasting flights, but you don't get to pick your beers.  You can have 4 samples of the year 'round lineup or 4 samples of whatever seasonals they have.  No mix and match.  wtf?

The best thing about this place is that One Barrel Brewing is opening a place just about across the street, in partnership with Wild Tomato wood-fire pizza.
