**Official** Door County thread (ya hey dere)
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:52:42 AM »
Might as well fire up a thread, looking for any tips on places and activities... first time spending a couple days up yonder.
Looking for any "off the beaten path" stuff, weird, kitschy, beer-soaked, :poke: etc. ...anything for us FIB's to gawk at.
Parks, nature sanctuaries, cheesemakers :cheese: , roadfood shacks, whatever.

Here's the short list so far:

Rowland's Calumet - Chilton
Wild Tomato, Gibraltar, Cookery, Oilerie, Greenwood Supper Club, Peninsula State Park - Fish Creek  (staying near here)
Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant - Sister Bay (goats on the roof)
Main St. Market (and probably Shipwrecked) - Egg Harbor
Door Co. Brewing Co. (draft)
Mink River Estuary, Ellison Bay area, Newport State Park
Marchant's, Belgian Bar - Brussels
Bearcats - Algoma (smokehouse)
Sir James Pub - Port Washington
Silver Creek - Cedarburg - maybe, if it's past 5pm

Does anyone remember the story DaPeculierDane/Eric told on BA long ago, about a roadside "Belgian Bar" in Brussels/Namur?
Said the place felt straight out of Misery, as if an axe murderer was going to jump from the shadows at any moment. Also they had Chimay and Belgian chocolate. Maybe it's still there?

Quote
A Belgian bar near ..... nothing
I think this picture sums up the feel of Namur best. Its really a small farming and dairy community that works hard and is quite normal. The population is only a few hundred, but it maintains an interesting closeness to its roots. A true look at Belgian-America, if I'm coining the phrase.

TIA sconnies

This place make pretty good sausages:  http://www.marchantsfoods.com/

Nothing fancy or exotic, but a few kinds of brats, polish, Belgian trippe, and potato sausages.  Word to the wise ... cook the trippe outdoors, because it stinks.

well, we went in the evening just after dusk. there was nobody there except the woman who hovered out of her living room (looked like it from the crack in the door) to serve us. it's a country bar to be sure. so.. if you want to hang out with a 78 year old woman in an empty bar and feel like you might get an axe to the head at any point.... go for it.

they had the regular Miller, etc. taps and some warm bottles of Chimay on the bar.  not sure on the Chimay prices but seem to remember being shocked by them.

Peninsula is bigger, so it has more trails for hiking, and has great views of the bay, but is also more popular/crowded.

The other places are all on the lake side, and the landscape is slightly different than on the bay side.
The Ridges is a small place, more nature walk than "hiking" ... Whitefish I would only go to if you want to swim on a sand beach ... Newport has great hiking, access/views of the lake (no beach, though, IIRC), and would probably be somewhat less crowded than Peninsula.

It's in Brussels.  Wouldn't be surprised if it was closed, though.  Once they re-routed Hwy 57 around Brussels (and some of the other small towns), a lot of small businesses in town that were just hanging on by a thread have closed up.

Less crowded is a big plus imho. That's was my MO for the estuary trip (and the wife likes birds).
There was an overlook near Bailey's Harbor that looked cool near there too.

Anything to be concerned about on here? :coffee:

Probably not on a weekday.  There's a lot of construction on 41, but it's 2 lanes and traffic moves along fine.  The Leo Frigo bridge (I-43, over the fox river in GB) is down to one lane for the rest of the summer, but it won't be bad midday.  One or two of the bridges in Sturgeon Bay are closed, IIRC, but should be fine on a weekday.

Good timing ... they started harvesting cherries last week.
Gonna be eating some fresh cherries then
(If we don't get axed at the Belgian bar)

godspeed

In case anyone ask, Emerge and Mrs Emerge were last seen in GB at approximately 1:40 pm.

Still alive... Bar was closed. A Belgian local at Marchants said the old lady only opens up on weekends occasionally :( peeked in and can confirm the 10ish Belgians though.

Place was deserted... I did read up on the historical Belgian settlement there, there were a bunch of informative educational plaques

Sounds right, definitely the biggest group in N. America. Idk if there are any other areas worldwide (Congo?, idk)

Somebody needs to take the torch and buy the Belgian Bar, and make it a Belgian b&b or something. :coffee:

Cool

So I had a beer on tap in Ephraim, WI
Fun Fact: Ephraim, WI is the last dry town in Wisconsin, and only this year (spring 2013) has the Peninsula Golf Club been granted a license to sell beer & wine.
Had a Polka King Porter from Door Co. Brewing  (happy hour 2-for-1, no less)

Grew up in Ephraim and it has always been dry-as-fvck.  Spent all my drinking days in Fish Creek and Sister Bay.

Sorry I'm too late to chime in.  You got a lot of good info from the rest of the crew.  Glad to hear you got to try the Polka King Porter.  I finally tried it for the first time this weekend myself.  It's named for Freddie Kodanko.  A colorful local character (to put it mildly).

Hey Steve! Thanks for posting, I had hoped you would chime in at some point
Wild Tomato was the highlight in Fish Creek (used to be another pizza joint).
Did notice some signs for polka ballrooms while I was up there

The 'new' Cookery (in Fish Creek) has a wine bar upstairs that is supposed to feature some good craft beer, too.  Haven't had a chance to get up there to check it out so I haven't been able to verify.

Ephraim has a lot going for it if you like small town everything.  The village scenery is the best in the county, bar none, and the proximity to Peninsula State Park makes it a great place for peace and quite.  I'm surprised to hear that there's anyplace within the village limits that is selling alcohol.  That horse has been beaten for decades.

Some of my favorite scenic locations are Sven's Bluff in Peninsula State Park (best sunsets anywhere) and Cave Point on the Lake side, just outside of Jacksonport.  Cave Point is best in the worst weather.  Windy days, with the waves crashing in, showcase the awesome power of nature.  You can feel every wave as it crashes into the bluff/caves.

If anyone needs any additional info, feel free to pm me before you travel.  Even if I haven't checked in here, I get email notifications of any Beer Spot pm's.

The Cookery was great, we went there for breakfast. They have a small but well chosen beer list, didn't get a chance to check out the upstairs bar this time.

The golf club just got the green light to start selling beer & wine this spring apparently... didn't know it was technically in Ephraim until I looked it up in google maps.

We hiked the Eagle Trail in the park, and it was challenging but lots of fun. Had to remember to stop looking down and take a look around now and then ;)

Cave Point sounds really awesome (so does Freddie Kodanko, would have been fun to have a beer with that guy back in the day).

I worked at the Cookery from '79-'82, back when it was a 30 seat restaurant, and then when it was remodeled into a 80 seat restaurant.  Haven't eaten there in 15 years, which was long before the fire and the new incarnation.

I knew Freddie and was friends with one of his nephews.  He was quite a character.  That article pretty much says it all.  I've used some of those photos on a Facebook page I help mod.

So I assume you got to the top of Eagle Tower while you were there?  Back in the day, you could see our house from there but now it's hidden by all the trees.  Did anyone bother to count the stairs to the top?  I want to know if I remember the correct number.

We got halfway up the tower after the Eagle Trail, but my wife was getting vertigo, so we had to go back down unfortunately. Nice view of the bay through the trees up there though, we'll get to the top next time

Spent A LOT of time in Peninsula State Park in my youth.  That also meant a lot of time on top of the tower.  I remember 109 steps.  We used to throw everything we could think of off that tower.

I used to snowmobile to school.  Life was simple, growing up in Door County.

taken from reddit.. so not sure the truthfulness:

"Hi friends!
Not sure if anyone is going to be up around Door County during Thanksgiving weekend, but I wanted to give you nice people a heads up on a pretty extensive Bourbon County Barrel Stout event.

Bier Zot Beer Cafe in Sister Bay (same owners as Wild Tomato in Fish Creek) is releasing bottles of 2012, 2013 and 2014 BCBS on Black
Friday. They've also got 2014 Barleywine and 2013 Coffee variants. AND they're throwing a keg of 2013 BCBS on tap. Quite the line-up.

Not quite sure on pricing at the moment, but they will be featuring flight options and you'll be able to buy unopened bottles to go (not positive if there will be a limit or not). Obviously, while supplies last."
