Washington DC
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:52:31 AM »
I'm going to a conference in DC in April (unfortunately not the same time as CBC).  Staying at the Ritz Carlton near Foggy Bottom.  I won't have a lot of time to go out and I'll probably have to have coworkers tag along with me.  Is there anywhere else beside ChurchKey worth going to in that general area?

Pizza Paradiso in DuPont Circle will be close. Great pizza and pretty good beer list taps/bottles. DCBrau is a bit of a hike from there.

Bier Baron!  It is an easy walk from Foggy Bottom.  I work at GWU in Foggy Bottom (hint hint) and we go there all the time after work.  Happy hour gets you a burger and a beer for $10 (we abused this too much with their $12 beers (as in, '04 Foghorn.  Prices otherwise are good) so now it's just a selection, sorry).  You could also walk to Georgetown and hit up the Pizza Paradiso there (different tap lists at each location).  To get to Dupont from Foggy is also a 10-15 minute walk, so the distance is comparable to Georgetown but there is more to do in Dupont as you are not a dumbass tourist or overprivileged undergrad.

In Dupont there is also Kramer's books, which will have a few locals on as well as Troegs and really good food all hours (they are 24 hours on the weekend).  It's a bookstore, cafe, and bar in one.  On CT Ave in Dupont is The Big Hunt, more locals and special releases.  I recommend stopping there as well.

Churchkey isn't that quick to get to either, there isn't a closer metro stop than Dupont which is the Red, FB is Blue/Orange.  It is a must-stop though.  Just taxi there, and try to get there towards the end of happy hour (not that they have one) as the crowd will have started to thin out.

If you are pressed for time and don't want to taxi much, there are some more local options to FB:

Founding Farmers on Penn has a small but carefully selected tap list and really good cocktails/prohibition style mostly, and the food is great as well - Bacon Lollies.  Make a reservation or just stalk the large central bar for seats.

Circa and District Commons are right around the Foggy Bottom metro and would suffice for happy hour.  The pretzel loaf for $2 at Commons will ruin anyone's diet.  Both will have at least 1 DC Brau on.  I'd say the food is better at Circa, but the beer selection is larger by draft and bottle at Commons.

DC Brau is by car only, and only open 12-4 on Saturdays unfortunately :(

Thanks for the info.

I don't think I'll be able to hit a happy hour.  I'll be able to go out later (like 9 or 10pm) on a Sunday night & Monday night.  Sounds like I'l probably hit one of your recommendations Sunday night and hit Churchkey Monday night.

Spanish and/or French, but it has to be an independent school.

I'm ABD so I need a real job (ie not hourly wages) while I'm writing because I refuse to take out any loans.

When in April?  I'm going to be conveniently out of town from 4/8-4/12.

Crazy how much value people put into a free movie code.  Gave the bartender a couple of free redbox codes last night before we left.  Went back tonight to Churchkey and was charged for 3 small pours while actually having 9 or 10 beers between 2 of us.

Still winging this thing, but greater VA/DC area 29th-4th. Really want to do some disc golf, a downtown night, and a Baltimore day/night.

Loosely thinking all day disc and DC 30-31. Baltimore 2nd or 3rd. Anything happen to be happening those dates? Tang, how flexible are you for disc? Nap, still downtown and up for a beer? My main station will be right by Dulles in Aldie, VA. Lots of various family obligations to squeeze in though.

Got to meet and play disc golf with Tang at least. Thanks for the loaner discs, and sorry I lost one. That was not the course to be rusty on. Loved it though.

Last minute request to have me in our DC office tomorrow and Tuesday, so I am heading in to stay at the St. Gregory tonight and tomorrow.
Planning on hitting up Pizzeria Paradiso (Dupont) and the Bier Baron this evening if anyone is nearby.
Probably 7:30 ETA to the area.
Shoot me a message if interested.
Cheers!

I'm a partner in my family's brewery. My brother and I have dreamt about it since I got him into home brewing. I quit home brewing and he became obsessed with it. I wanted him to move West, he wanted me to move East…. He went full steam ahead with East, but I ain't moving back East. Just supporting and helping as much as I can.
15bbl system. Right by Dulles airport.
Brewery and webiste currently under construction.

Brewhouse should be here in 2-3 weeks. Hope to open soon thereafter.

Ill shoot you a PM with my number.  Im heading out to Chicago for the weekend however.  Get the PA breakfast at Bluejacket, scrapple! They are selling bottles to go next door now.  Get Forbidden Planet.

DC Brau gets real busy, so I suggest getting there early or towards the end of hours.  They will post offerings on their FB a few days prior too.

Atlas is new and up and coming, they only make a handful of beers I am aware of.  3 Stars is mostly good, but expensive according to bar owners around here.

Also check out Right Proper, new brewpub in Shaw in the city.

Bit of Ocelot news for those interested.

We're open! Been open a month now. Really good response so far. Pretty exciting.

While we were in distributor limbo we went into DC to move some beer. We have a couple DC events coming up I'd love to see anyone who can make it at.

May 14th we'll be at The Big Hunt

May 21st we'll be at Meridian Pint

I'll be in town for both of those. Would also love to see anyone who can make it to the brewery. We are really proud of the space. Took a lot of work. We are having our Grand Opening party on May 23rd.

I plan to grab a growler or two to haul to HowardFest tomorrow.  Do you guys open at 3:00?

Awesome! Yeah, we open at 3, but we don't turn anyone away. Come by whenever you want. Someone is always there. If you know about what time you'll be there I'll give them a head's up. I'm in San Diego until the 13th.
