I have had a growler that was over a year old and it was still fine.  Granted, it was filled by Charleston Beer Exchange and not someone who had no clue what they were doing (not saying that is the case with yours since I do not know).  They sanitize, bottom fill with tube, and cap on foam.  So there is no issue with oxygen being in the beer.  Only thing they could possibly do better is a CO2 purge or use a beer gun instead of a tap with a tube.

filled at O'so by the owner. i hope he knew what he was doing but who knows. it was filled with a tube, that much i remember.

also, it was something ridiculous like $13 bucks

wait...so you kept this for a year?

that's correct. things get lost in the shuffle

Didn't realize you had a TipTop/NFLMVP type cellar.

:coffee:
i'm not good at putting this stuff in words but i can't see myself with anyone else except maybe urbanhack.

My cellar isn't what it once was.  I haven't been adding anything and am slowly chipping away.  I don't think I could lose track of a growler.

been holding on to a Lakefront Beer Line barleywine for, i think, 7 years.  RB gives it a 36. BA an 83.

anyone had one of these things?

looks like dr. bug had one in '06 and gave it a 3.4/5

I supposed I did.  I would never have remembered it.

anyone here have access to Maine beers?

Bakes has sent me a few of their beers.

well, i'd like to try some but i'm afraid if i setup a trade with bakes i'll get a 93lb refrigerator box full of beer every 3 months for the next decade.

Hit up jmu then.

ah, yes. thanks for the reminder

What are you looking for? Maine Beer Company (Peeper, Lunch, Zoe, Titus, Tom); Rising Tide Brewing, Sebago, Bull Jagger, Sea Dog

There are some real cool small breweries but might be growler/draft only - Oxbow and Marshall Wharf

These guys are doing some great stuff too (mainly Kombucha and Cider), they are Urban Farm Fermentory.
- UFF Culture -

Founded in March 2010 by entrepeneur Eli Cayer, a Mainer himself, the Urban Farm Fermentory (or UFF) is an experimental fermentation center. We source as many local ingredients as possible in an attempt to highlight and preserve Maine's unique terroir. Our array of fresh pressed Maine apple cider is spontaneously (or wild) fermented in a Farmhouse style until it's bone dry & tart. "Spontaneous fermentation" utilizes naturally-occurring yeast in the air and on the fruit, which means even the yeast culture in our cider is local. Our mead, made with raw Maine honey, has a similarly unique flavor: drier and crisper than many versions. And our potent, probiotic Kombucha (fermented tea), with its 1.5% ABV and tart, acidic bite, is one of the few true examples of the form left after the infamous kombucha crackdown of 2011. For more information on our assorted products, please visit the PRODUCTS page, which is currently under development.

No idea as I haven't had it, but that surprises me a bit since SN is one of the most consistent breweries out there imo.

FTR, it was bottled on December 22 but tastes like a 2 year old hoppy lager....or ass.

Just cracked a second bottle to make sure it wasn't a fluke.  More of the same.

And it only took me two bottles to figure out that ass tastes a lot like mother####ing light struck.  <_<

I  Galaxy hops.  I've had a handful of beers now that use them (Flat12 Walkabout, Sun King/OB Deuce, Schlafly T-IPA, and Pipeworks Galaxy Unicorn) and I think they're perfect.  I need to buy a bunch next time I'm at the homebrew shop.

On the bright side, this has to be an isolated incident.  If I could find 12 packs nearby, I'd give it another go 'round, since those are protected from light.

I bought the 6 pack at Woodman's, whose beer is kept at the back of the store, i.e., no windows.  Now, fluorescent lights on the other hand...

limited production? or nerdfrenzy in your area?

i'm thinking i'll get a shot at it.  apparently, though, i have to remember to "like" the place it will likely land so that i get the instant news.

Nerd frenzy combined with "beer manager" douchery.  Ever since some of the local managers got added to a facebook beer group I'm in, I've gotten a peek behind the curtain, and they're actually pretty big dicks.

Cherry picking special releases and trading them away is the one that annoyed me the most.  There's a lot of "look at me" posts where they're drinking shit they won't sell to people.

Besides the clowns on facebook, there's a ton of snobbery and price gouging here.  Plus they don't put the beers out or let people know they're around, you have to know to ask so they can present it to you from the back room.  The whole thing sucks, when all I want to do is go shop for beer.

some of this happening here lately as well

wife went to pick out some beers for me for christmas.  she only has a vague idea of what i'm looking for.. asks the store clerk for an assist.  clerk helps her pick two out and says "ooh,  we just got a new one in but it's not going on the floor.. i bet he'd love it... but i can't sell it to you because this is reserved for our regulars."

i am a semi-regular. sometimes i hear about these beers from MVP, bison or severstad but never actually see them.

The local place right by my office did this last week with Sucks.  Only reason I knew they had it was because I saw the empty case in someone else's hand that they were using to carry other things out of the store.  Pisses me right off.

I guess they're rationing it everywhere. Last year there were stacks at my local upscale grocery and this year, it's a case per store per week and you have to reserve it in advance or be lucky enough to walk in right when they get it.

I understand to a degree.  At least he wasn't gouging on it.  Another local store puts these types of releases in view, behind the sales counter with a sign saying "one per customer".
A much more reasonable sales method, and not condescending to those who don't know this week's release schedule and the secret code.

This is what annoys me, too.  Put it on the counter with a sign that says limit one per customer.  A place by me did it with BCS and it sat there for a month, vs. my local that I never saw a single bottle.  It's obnoxious as hell that I have to guess which beers you might have hidden away, when the goal of a retail outlet is to sell as much shit as you can.

I've long assumed this happens everywhere.  I've gotten a handful of never-made-it-to-the-shelf beers over the years because I've specifically asked if they had it/were getting it.  Every time I've ever asked, though, it's been like a quiz where I need to know the secret password.  "Will you guys be getting any vanilla BCS?"  "Who makes it?"  "Uh, Goose Island." "BCS meaning...?"  "Bourbon County Stout." "The buyer isn't here right now, let me take down your name and number and we'll let you know".  Like it's a huge secret or something and they have to determine if I've passed the test.

That's going to happen in any business, though.  Certain "preferred clients" are going to get preferred treatment.  In the beer world, that means that they're going to have access to certain beers that the rest of us don't.

That said, I would probably think twice about dealing with stores/buyers who are somewhat-publicly being assholes about it.

This is a huge dick move.  People are going to get preferred treatment, fine.  But you never let the client know that they're not a preferred client.  Client Management 101.  I would probably avoid shopping at that place if possible after that one.
