Never felt obligated, but almost always did (when I was trading)

two different questions....

"are extras "required/mandatory" when trading?"  no

"Do you feel obligated to send extras?"  yes

I've never sent a box without extras.  I've even extra'd on in-person trades.  I always try to hook people up.

Sometimes I would have preferred to not receive extras as it's pretty insulting to just get people's leftover old IPA's.

I've sent them on every trade unless it was specified not to.  I have also received some fairly crappy extras, but no biggie, they still got drank

this is what turned me off.

i was in the habit of always including 1 or 2 extra bottles. especially if it was something i knew a person wanted.  then i would get back shit, old, beer where it was clear the person was just trying to empty their cellar of undesireables.

between that and added, unnecessary, cost. i stopped adding extras. (and, well, trading for that matter)

As discussed previously in chat, extras are one of several reasons I've (mostly) stopped trading altogether.

Except for the first 2-3 trades where I had no idea what I was doing, I always felt obligated to send extras.  I would often worry about how the extras would be received - do they like this beer?  Is it fresh enough for them? - and whether the extras I would receive would be of comparable quality.

Beer people in general are pretty generous, which is a great thing, but it leads to higher expectations that sometimes can't be fulfilled.

I used to send extras back when I traded a lot.  But now I HATE packing boxes with bubble wrap, so I always use premade bottle shipping boxes that dont allow for extras.

When I trade with people now, I tell them I'm only sending six.

Shit man, we can hoof it from here.

But can you walk on this much beer?
