New Job Beer Giveaway Thingy
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:53:14 PM »
Ive been a stay at home dad since our first son was born almost three years ago and also had a part time job at a liquor store for the last two and a half years. Just recently got a full time job back in liquor retail management and dropped the part time gig for the time being. Because of all this I have some extra time on my hands and a little extra money and thought this would be fun. Anyhoo, this site is full of a bunch of cool people and I want to do a little contest for a beer giveaway.

Here is what Im looking for. I love to homebrew and am making the step up to all grain brewing and I want to know what I should brew first. The winner of this will come up with the best idea for my first all grain brew. Not necessarily looking for the craziest most difficult brew just something that sounds damn good. Ales only please and recipes are not necessary but feel free to post one. In return you will receive a couple bottles of the brew along with a bunch of other beer (not made by me, but by professional brewers) that I have at the store or in my beer fridge. I will set the deadline at one week from today and pick the winner on Thur Oct 4.

Nugget Nectar Clone

BYO apparently posted a recipe last year then corrected it.

http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/oct-2011-byo-nugget-nectar-clone-og-doesnt-add-up-273597/

Not that I've ever brewed it, but NN is my favorite beer and since I know you like hops that's my vote.

Congrats on the new job!

West coast IPA aged on Spanish cedar spirals.  The cedar adds a really awesome spicyness to the beer that you don't get from other wood treatments and it works awesome with IPA.

Picked out = somewhat
bought = no

Probably going to go with the 10 gallon cooler and rig it up with a false bottom for the mash tun.

Get more than you think you need right now so that you are ready for later.  I LOVE having a 15 gallon kettle and would get it again no question.  It's nice having a HLT, but not necessary.  Just makes things move a bit smoother.

Ask others.  I've only been using mine for a while.  Pwoods, Jaysus, and others that have been brewing for a while might have some suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions and they all sounded good, yes even the Cucumber IPA, but I narrowed it down to two beers. The Horseradish Stout and the West Coast IPA aged on cedar spirals, and have decided to go with the Horseradish Stout suggested by Swabs. I am a big fan of fresh real horseradish and I think that could turn out real well and would be fun to try. I should be able to brew it within the next two to three weeks and will let you know when it is ready. Thanks again!

I actually looked for recipes right after I saw you post it and I did find one. Ill have to look it up again, but if I remember correctly, he brewed it twice because he didnt care for the first one so he tweaked it a bit for the second one and it turned out better. Im planning on brewing a pretty small batch first just in case.  ;)

I would save some 1 gal glass cider jugs.  Brew 6 gal. of stout, then put some fresh horseradish in one, wasabi powder in another and a blend in the 3rd.  Then you essentially have 3 brews and some stock stout to blend back in.  There are some pretty tasty wasabi cream sauces for meat, so maybe a cream/milk stout that is more heavy on the earthy malt than chocolate malt would be tasty.   Saaz hops could also add a spicy compliment?  I love Frankenbrews.

Happily (I think) fermenting away in its bucket with the lovely horse cock radish sitting on top. Should have it to you in about a month.

In a month Swabs might be relocated.  Don't ship just so he has to move here...

Tasty Beer

Thanks man! We were afraid we used too much horseradish but in the end we kind of wish we would have used more. The flavor and heat come through a little but I was hoping for a little more. We are going to do it again using more horseradish.
