Went to Timer's in Racine over the weekend, so much old beer. Other Half cans that were a year old, an American Solera beer from 2016. Nothing I wanted to gamble on. Also lots of newer WI breweries i'd never heard of like Broken Bat, Minocqua, 1840. oldguy feels :bakes:

Lactose on my mind, a friend of ours came by to trade beers and gave me 2 lactose beers out of 4.
I was like "no lactose beers please"...but not sure that it computes.

One was from Pipeworks, just literally tastes like carbonated fruit juice. Getting tired of this crap.

The OG lactose DIPA  They also beat Hop Butcher to using Dan Grzeca's label art by a decade or so. I remember thinking "what's that weird aftertaste" even back then.

I never had a problem with the aftertaste, but I haven’t had one in quite a while.

I remember popping a <7 day old bottle in the middle of a sour tasting event at Mekong (local beer bar) and you could smell the hops from across the room.

That thing is a tooth melter.  Between the extreme bitterness fresh off the line, plus the sugar, it's an experience.

3F Intens Rood PX

PX Sherry barrel blend of Intens Rood. $45 was a little steep, but it was cool to see in the wild.

Label text
Bottling date: 07/10/2020 • 75cl

"While looking for old sherry barrels, we cannot get lucky all the time. While we will be sourcing barrels directly from bodegas to assure provenance and quality, we had a batch of Pedro Ximenez (PX) barrels that was on the peated side (albeit subdued). As a result, we decided not to use them for Zenne y Frontera, but to blend them with other (fruit) lambikken into geuze and fruit blends.

This is the first of such blends to be released. Sour cherries were macerated partly on young peated lambik and partly on two-year old straight lambik in a stainless steel tank. We blended with young and three-year old (!) lambik. 55% of the blend is old lambik and the final fruit intensity is 567 grams of sour cherries per litre.

3 Fonteinen Intens Rood, a vigourous Kriek, is the slow and all-natural maceration of whole sour cherries on traditional lambik. No addition of juices, syrups or artificial sweeteners. Unfiltered. Unpasteurised."

I did not pass on a $60 3F Hommage. I had to have one. Ten years ago, imagining that I could buy this on the shelf in Texas would have blown my mind. I won't buy it again at that price but it was so good.

Benthic from Half Acre - $50 a four pack of 12 ouncers.  A buck an ounce is not too terrible but I would have bought a can.  Just not four.

3F Hommage for over $30. I feel like I would enjoy a $50-$60 champagne much more than a lambic (at that price). Just can't let myself do it (especially, since I had Hommage years ago and it did not make me cry tears of joy).

I've been avoiding most of the 3F fruited stuff, too expensive and acetic. The exception being Druif, and i'd try some other grape stuff if they ever showed up here.

Looked at the very pricey Sahtipaja stuff, (BA meads mostly) in tiny bottles for $70. They had a Berliner that looked 10 years old, but unpriced so I skipped that too. So much kiddie cartoon label shit that my eyes just gloss over.

Edit: Also put a bottle of Tipopils back. Didn't want to pay a premium for a likely old lager. (also unpriced)

Several Side Project bottles, 40-50 range, just not worth it, imho. Good for them to stick it to resellers, seems to be a robust economy around them. Sat next to a lady yammering to everyone about being a proxy for her FB group, her email is proxymichelle @ yahoo if you’re interested.

It’s a though business nowadays. So, if SP still carries enough cache that people want to pay those prices and add the mule tax, good for them. However, for the life of me, I just don’t understand why (and I say that as a general fan of SP).

This is probably true for any hyped high-dollar brewery, but there's a bit of "emperor's new clothes" going on imho. More of the same at a higher cost, partly because they can, and partly to thwart resellers. Maybe it's just capitalism, charging what the market will bear. Or a high perceived value (hype) translating into high monetary value, when there are better products out there at half the price.

The people clamoring for them put it on a pedestal with blinders on, driving the high secondary market. There's no shortage of people with disposable cash looking for the absolute best beer/thing they can buy, without doing any research for themselves. The hype is sustained as more of these new consumers are drawn to the higher end of the market.

I just don't know who is hyping these beers still. Ten years ago they were hot but what beer bros (and from where) are still ga-ga to this extent. How do they sustain a decade of heat (rightfully or not but definitely overpriced).  I guess I am just getting very out of touch (and lost) with the beer scene.

Mainly I think it's an influx of new people with disposable income coming into the beer hobby and looking for the #1 thing. Especially in STL, it seems like there's a cottage industry around hyping SP for beer trading/reselling. Having a hype brewery in your backyard will do that I guess.

They got more expensive a few years ago, and I lost interest due to cheaper/better local and Belgian options. SP is still high quality though, and had a few $20 750's available, so I bit on those. Wild ales in general are waning in popularity it seems, but you wouldn't know it at Side Project. I think they are also fairly diversified with the Shared Brewing division doing more popular styles.

It takes a lot to make me gasp but there were 3 beers at the cash register today.  Here is one of them:
https://craftshack.com/products/anchorage-blessed

Beer parodying itself. They saw dollar signs after Deal With The Devil got so popular. :$::$:

That label's pretty badass though.

Yeah, their label artwork is always awesome.  They are pumping out ridiculously priced stouts/bw on the reg and have no issues selling them   Not for me, but I have payed a lot for something on tap since it's rare that I get to Anchorage.
Went back to the store.  This stuff is no longer next to the cash register.  Just sitting on the selves gathering dust.  Deal with the Devil is $109 and the most expensive, while $87 for 3 others. I imagine it will be there until inflation will make $100 seem like a normal price.

A steal compared to this reputable salesman...

Was this written by a bot?

"This beer was very limited and only the most astute and elite of beer connoisseurs know how many of these were bottled. That number is a meager 147 bottles that were sold to the public and I know that because I know about what I am selling. Only the most progressive of beer drinkers know how many are left but this is certainly one of very few. My goal is to provide beer drinkers with the world's best beer. I believe that the inaccessibility of this beer should only make it better and knowing that it was mentioned on Facebook that 147 bottles were sold to the public and that only makes the beer drinker who knows that much cooler and progressive. This beer is priced with a progressive approach to bringing the greatest beer on earth to auction and allowing the entitled drinker a chance to purchase and quench their thirst."

It almost feels like a joke.

Not my tab, but here's a recent tab from Kulminator. Magnum of '99 Chimay :o

Looks like roughly 26-28 beers for 287 euro. $10-11 per beer seems high.
