*Official* What Beers Didn't You Buy Today?
« on: August 04, 2012, 05:29:18 AM »
Been  trying real hard to cut back on buying. Just saw the Firestone Walker Barrel Aged DBA on the shelf and grabbed two. Then put one back. Then put the other back and walked out empty handed.
Didn't buy BA DBA x2  :pickle:

Ha! I had the same chance yesterday to grab some DBA and passed. $12.99 bombers? No thanks. I'd rather get a sixer of Union Jack and some change back.

Yep. I'm in town until Wednesday and have both Monday and Tuesday free. I'm gonna message G tomorrow and nail down a better time to come around, but I'm happy to meet up for a beer or two away from the store too! Hit me up privately, I'm typing from the phone and it's pain.

Dan and I were discussing Founders Breakfast Stout a couple nights ago so I stopped at a package store outside of Atlanta on the way back from the Braves game tonight to look for some.  I was stoked to see they had it, but inexplicably they wanted $20 a four pack.

Did a price check and the guy told me thats what they usually go for.     Pretty sure he confused Breakfast  Stout with KBS, but needless to say I left it in the cooler ( :bye: KingG).

I passed up Bourbon County Stout at $23 per four pack at one place, and at $28 per four pack at a place across the street.

17.99 for a four pack of the brown ale from Sun King/Oscar Blues. Pretty easy to pass up with Sun King's crazy gorilla math pricing.

Sounds like a good idea for an article :poke:  While you're on the subject, you can look into why I can't walk into a liquor store and grab a 6-pack for less than $11, no matter what style or brewery.

Not sure on Sam Adams, but Sierra Nevada is $7.99 in the grocery, or $8.99 for Torpedo, vs. $10.99 at the liquor store.

ETA:  Checked a liquor store with online prices:

Boston Lager - $9.99
Alpine Spring - $9.99
Octoberfest - $10.99

SNPA - $7.99
Tumbler - $9.49
Torpedo - $10.99

I'm fairly certain these prices are higher at my local.

Here, usually all SA are 7.99, regular SN same with Torpedo a buck more.

I wouldn't do a whole bomber by myself, but yeah, I think it is really well done and tastes great. Very unique. It's the only "chili beer" I've had that I like.

I've bitched about Indiana's prices for a very long time. I'm not sure how to write that article about it and now come off like an asshole.  The breweries blame the distributors, distributors blame the liquors stores.  I've seen the pricing sheets from Cavalier and World Class, and the answer is a combination of breweries charging far too much money and liquor stores jacking the prices up because they can.

I think if we can get the law passed that grocery stores can sell cold beer you will see a price drop.

I am always floored when I can buy six packs of beer that were brewed in Indiana cheaper in other states than I can buy here in Indiana.  Chicago for Three Floyds, and Upland was two bucks cheaper a sixer in Wisconsin than here.  Founders is usually two bucks cheaper in every state that touches Indiana as well.  Our pricing model here is detrimental to continued overall growth and marketshare.

It doesn't stop with the stores, the bars are in on it, too.  The $5-6 per pint pricing model is insane.

Very good point. It irks me when places advertise $5 dollar pint "specials".  Someone should tell them there is nothing special about a $5 dollar pint.

tl;dr ahead...

Forget $6, how about the places with "high end" drafts for twice that? $12/8oz. in precious little teacups... dunno if this is just a local phenomenon, but it's trickled down to just about any bar with craft taps around here. Places like Map Room still faithfully serve many beers in pints, but Local Option used to be the worst with this, imho. Now everything is $9 and under, but not long ago was $12-13 for some import drafts... seriously. Bad Apple has a different approach, cheaper pints, but $8/6oz. drafts which would equal $20 pint. Funnier still is the "shut up and pay up for the good stuff" mentality of some that must feel special dropping cash that apparently justifies this practice. It's a free market, but it definitely decides where i'll be spending my money... my $0.02.

$5-6 is for a standard pint.  Prices go up quickly, or glasses get much smaller, for anything else.  DIPAs and Imperial Stouts won't be included for $5 unless it's an 8oz glass with maybe 5-6oz of beer in it.

The local Taco Mac chain here now seems to use $10.75 for the price for an 11 oz (supposedly) pour of any of the "special" beers.  Duvel Green being the most recent one I remember.  The local beers are the only crafts you can get there in the $5-6 a pint range.  Things like Wake and Bake will get the 11oz treatment too, but the price wont be $11 like the others I mentioned.

My local has been doing the 8-10 oz pour thing (and jacking up the price) for years.  About 1/3 of their taps qualify for this.

As long as this is listed clearly I am ok with it. I can then make an informed decision on my choice but man it fires me up when i get one of those cheater pints. I actually think $5 pints is a great deal. Prices around here are outrageous with no sign of slowing down. I am not even sure I can find a craft pint for under $5. Harpoon, Sam and Sierra Nevada are all $5+

This, as long as there are pint options also... grinds my gears when I can't even get a pint of a standard beer. Cheater pints also most definitely suck.

Jerry's on division was selling FW Double Jack for 9.25 for a 10oz pour. They were selling 22oz bombers across the street for $8. Ridiculous.

Fuck those things. If you advertise a pint, it should be a pint.

It just doesn't make sense to drink in bars anymore
Seriously though, it's getting harder to justify unless there's something draft-only that's way too tempting to pass up.

Ive seen cheater pints that dont even hold a 12 ounce can. My wife typically walks away from me when I pull the bartender aside and explain that a pint is 16 ounces and the menu states "pint" and I dont want a fake 12 ounce beer.

I do.  I do need you.  But not for T&A.  What is T&A II anyway?
