Reading of the kid's books tonight, The Tin Forest ...

"There was once a wide, windswept place, near nowhere and close to forgotten, that was filled with all the things that no one wanted.
Right in the middle was a small house, with small windows, that looked out on other people’s garbage and bad weather."

Sounds kind of familiar.

So, you do realize the more you post stuff like this the more idiotic you appear for choosing to live here, right?

Oh, you don't?

No surprise.   :coffee:

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/entertainment/nightlife/2014/08/06/northeast-wisconsin-craft-beer-festival/13682565/

With all the brewery expansion happening across Green Bay, the timing is right for a craft beer festival says officials from PMI, Festival Foods and the four local breweries.

Craft beer enthusiasts can choose from more than 150 regional beers to fill their tasting mug and hoist it for a round of cheers at The Northeast Wisconsin Craft Beer Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 4 at Shopko Hall. One of the options will be a steam-style beer that is produced collaboratively by Titletown Brewing Co., Hinterland Brewery, Stillmank Brewing and Badger State Brewing. It's a beer that has characteristics of both a lager and ale, says Brad Stillmank, owner of Stillmank Brewing Co.

Advance tickets for the event are $40 general admission and $75 VIP. Prices go up $10 at the door and designated driver tickets are also available. General admission includes: unlimited craft beer sampling, souvenir 2-ounce sampling mug, music, interactive games and seminars, tasting guide and light fare hors d'oeuvres. The VIP ticket gets all that plus: one-hour advance entry into the event, VIP dinner and private beer tasting selections during VIP dinner not available to general admission.

I agree.  This is Bison's thread so he can feel bad and superior at the same time.

Yeah, I know this place. Met the owner during GB Craft Beer Week a month ago. Guy told me his life story, including recovery from illness and starting brewing in January.

At that time, the only place to get a pint was 614 George Street. The brew? Well, I think he has a ways to go. It was tough to finish the ones I tried.

I'd have to say, I'm "quite impressed" with the new stretch of highway after you cross the Leo Frigo headed north toward 141.

Nice view of the bay and a nice view of the mighty Duck Creek river delta.

You know, if Green Bay (in particular) is a shithole, it's only because we (Europeans) made it that way.

Green Bay used to be an extremely fertile body of water teeming with walleye, northern pike and muskellunge.

Flocks of waterfowl that darkened the sky, stopping on their migrations to feed on wild celery that flourished in the bay.

Then we fucked it all up with paper mill effluent and other pollutants.

I'm not prepared to say "Green Bay is a shithole" (although it does smell like ass when you drive the Leo Frigo over the sewage treatment plant).

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/entertainment/nightlife/beer/2015/08/25/new-green-bay-craft-brewery/32331361/

Green Bay’s fifth craft brewery will open next month in the former Marty’s Boston Crab building, 875 Lombardi Ave.

Leatherhead Brewing Co. founders Amanda and Chad Sharon and Sheila and Ian Perks will make their brewing operation the center of everything by putting it in the middle of the dining room.

“People will be able to sit here and drink the beer while they’re watching it being made,” Chad Sharon said. “We want it to be part of the whole experience.”

Leatherhead will start off small with a production capacity of seven barrels, but the Sharons said increasing capacity will happen once everyone settles into the new operation after their targeted mid-September opening.

The Sharons, both of whom have ties to the Green Bay area, said they’ve been talking about the idea of opening a brewery with the Perks for three years. The idea started to become a reality when the Sharons tasted a homebrewed stout Chad’s cousin Jacob Sutrick made in Milwaukee.

“I was a light beer drinker, and his stout changed me,” Chad Sharon said. “It was all over but the crying.”

Sutrick plans to brew five or six staple beers and introduce seasonal and one-off specialty beers as the business makes it through the early stages.

“We want to focus on developing the brew pub atmosphere first, then look at increasing our production and distribution,” Chad Sharon said.

Leatherhead also will give patrons a different way to sample their beers. They’re installing a “beer wall” where people can use a scan card to buy and pour themselves beers by the ounce.

Customers will buy a scan card from the bartender good for up to 32 ounces of beer. The patron then goes over to the six taps on the beer wall, scans the card and pours themselves as much or as little of their chosen beer.

“You can pour your own beer and pour as much or as little as you want,” Amanda Sharon said. “You can try as many beers as you want.”

They also plan to install similar scan card taps at two bar tables and four dining room tables.

The brewery will be Green Bay’s fifth craft beer operation, but the Sharons said they feel there’s plenty of room in the area for more craft brewers.

“Cities that have a lot of craft breweries often take a ‘more the merrier’ approach,” Amanda Sharon said. “We hope that’s the response we get here as well.”

“We talked with some of the other brewers in town,” Chad Sharon added. “None of them have been concerned. They’ve welcomed us with open arms and helped us through the process.”

Before they can get to brewing beer, though, the foursome will have to complete an extensive renovation of the former Marty’s building, which has sat dormant for seven years.

They’ve removed the layer of dust that covered everything, cleaned the kitchen and removed what they can — the aquarium, the barnwood fixtures, small banquet area.

Other things, though, like the fake exposed-brick walls and lighthouse atop the building, will be addressed as best they can. The 100-year-old barnwood centerpiece in Marty’s has been removed, but the wood was salvaged and will be turned into custom tables, accents and bar fixtures by a Sturgeon Bay woodworker.

The final element will be finding the roughly 55 people it will take to staff the operation. Amanda Sharon said they’ve planned a all-day job fair Monday at the nearby Tundra Lodge.

"We're going to have, probably, five staple beers," said Sharon. "Two to start, we're going to do a stout and an ale."

"The brewery -- scheduled to open the Friday before the Seattle home opener -- will also feature self-serve beer."

What is the new fascination with self-serve beer? I don't get it. I don't go out to drink to serve myself beer just like I don't go out to eat to cook and serve my own food. This new concept baffles me.

not sure

there's a grill-your-own steak place here that's pretty popular. that makes a bit more sense to me than tapping my own beer like a college party.

some people already feel pressure to make decisions when browsing a menu at their own table. that's without anyone standing next to/behind them waiting for them to pick an option.

hell, these self-serve soda machines are a nightmare.

If ordered in a bottle I usually ask to pour.  Many bartenders and waitstaff make a show of pouring even at beer bars.  I pour better because I know what I want.

Also, German beers are served in steins or other glassware that is marked at a half liter.  I wish all glassware was marked.  These 6oz snifters of $10 are evil.  You are getting 4 maybe 5oz of beer.  The worst are the pints with the large base and thick walls that with a large head you get maybe 11 ounces of beer.  The worst offender around Chicago is Black Rock.

Two smaller developments — a taproom and brewery and a bed-and-breakfast — may be coming to Green Bay's east side.

By a unanimous 6-0 vote, the Green Bay Plan Commission tonight (Monday) authorized a conditional-use permit for Noble Roots Brewery at 2790 University Ave., across from the former Tillmann Landscape Nursery property.

The brewery location is a one-time car lot with a small building, vacant for years.

Planned is an approximately 32-seat taproom and brewery. Beer from the small brewery would be sold on site plus through limited distribution to local establishments. No wine or liquor would be sold at Noble Roots.

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/money/2016/01/14/green-bays-sixth-craft-brewery-works/78790842/

An east side family has taken the first steps toward opening what would be Green Bay’s sixth craft brewery.

Earlier this week, the Green Bay Plan Commission approved Noble Roots Brewery’s request for a conditional use permit for a brewery and tap room in the vacant TNT Signature Glass building between University Avenue and St. Anthony Drive.

Noble Roots Brewery would be run by Marvin Falish, his son, Alex, and son-in-law Jordan Sullivan.

The family wants to convert the 1,400-square-foot building at 2790 University Ave. into a small craft brewery and tap room with room for about 30 patrons. Alex said the tap room would serve Noble Roots beer and a few other local beers, but no wine or liquor.

“We don’t want to be a tavern. (The tavern label) is something we wanted to avoid,” he said. “We will make more than enough beer to serve our tap room customers and (for) some minor distribution in the area.”

He told the Plan Commission the tap room would be similar to Stillmank Brewery’s setup but about one-fourth the size of the North Henry Street brewery’s tap room.

The family recently held a meeting with residents in the Schmitt Park neighborhood to talk about their plans and answer neighbors’ questions.

To that end, the conditional use permit restricts Noble Roots’ tap room hours to 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. It also prohibits expansion without Plan Commission and City Council approval and requires the group to landscape the property line along St. Anthony Drive.

The conditional use permit still needs the council’s approval before the site plans are approved, and Noble Roots still has to secure its federal brewers license and other permits before any plans can proceed. The Falishes declined to provide details on a timeline for renovating the property.

The craft brewery would be the sixth to open in Green Bay, joining Hinterland, Titletown, Badger State, Stillmank and Leatherhead brewing companies.

150k+ people in the metro area.  75% of which are by definition alcoholics.  probably room for a few dozen more, no?

if severstad were alive he could probably speak upon how many breweries used to be here.. when Green Bay was much, much smaller and they were thriving

I've actually been thinking about that.

Parents of several personal friends have passed recently, so it's on my mind.

Biggest post-death party wish is for loved ones to crank my records at my favorite local dive bar. Awesome tunes, great brew, cool people. Then, scatter my ashes on a disc golf course the next day (hangover round).

If I were "propped" in a corner, my twisted "loved ones" would bugger me hundreds of times before midnight.

Ah, what the hell! I'm dead anyway.
