Bell's brews (too old???)
« on: June 22, 2007, 12:12:36 AM »
I have
1995 Expo Stout
1995 Eccentric Ale

Will either of these be better or worst then their Original?

I may have a taste test soon to find out, but thinking they may have lost something. Anyone have experience with brews this old?

They are probably bad.  You should send them to the Tip Top waste removal service.

I'm willing to bet they are both still good.  The Eccentric recipe changes every year, so I kinda doubt you'll even remember what it originally was like, I just remember those things being HOT.

Of course, it all depends on how they were kept.

I got them directly from Jason, so I am guessing they were cellared well... I had the 96 Eccentric and a 99 Expo at Bell's, and both held up pretty well (had another year Eccentric, and the bottled beer was better then the corked brew), so I am guessing these will be great still.

If Jason gave them to you I would wager that they were handled properly.

Going slightly off-topic...If anyone has any 1995 Expedition or other similar cellar-able goodies I would be interested in seeing if a deal could be worked out. The kid was born in '95 and I'm trying to put together some goodies to open when she turns 21 in two-plus years. She's not huge into beer but does occasionally sample some of ours and isn't adverse to stouts for sure. She'd probably be OK with b-wines -not so sure about gueze/lambic but we'd be willing to try.

No IPAs :furley:

Thanks in advance.

1995 is a ways back.  The only thing I might have is a Bigfoot, which I don't think I have.  I'll let you know if I do.

Javit's the only guy I know who drinks shit that old.  You might be able to turn up a few Thomas Hardys somewhere, I know people like to hoard that one for decades.

This.  Also, when did Courage go out of production?

I do have a JW Lees Harvest. Opened a 97 a couple years back at the campfire in the UP with NFLSteve and it was pretty tasty then. Have to think the 95 may be dead or dying though...hell maybe I'll be that way before 2016, too. :sadbanana:

Courage was re-made in the last year or two, it's still around here.

That would be ~2000.  Also, I think I need that label.  :)

They made that whole stout series in 2001 or 2002, too. I remember being excited to find 'em all.

My local store was calling it The Twelve Stouts of Christmas, and my brother-in-law and I had the entire set in one very drunken night.

 :bye:

You could definitely track down some English beers that old, and Courage, Thomas Hardy's, and JW Lees definitely come to mind. One seller in particular migrated to ebay.it (Italian ebay) when the crackdown happened. I don't have anything from 1995 other than 1xBigfoot that's part of that (stupid) 22 year vertical I have going on.  You should check with nflmvp... he's got stuff that old I'm sure.

I just looked in and shook my head at NFLSteve's cellar when I was in A-town last January. There probably are a few of 'em in there.
